I have always had a hard time explaining what I am doing as a graphic designer, and thought that among other creative disciplines, graphic design is one of the most overlooked and misunderstood.
Considering this contradiction, I was inspired create Moiré, a line of houseware products that give reference to graphic design, with a focus on typography. I began asking letterforms what they would like to be if they were three-dimensional objects, explored each form, and observed the details that would function perfectly as everyday objects. Initially, letter "O" wanted to be a plate, so I created "Typo Plates". Soon, I was developing a diverse collection of tableware items inspired by type.
Moiré won
How Magazine - International Outstanding Design Award - 2009
Paula Rhodes Design Achievement Award - 2008
Helvetica Plate
When 2 plates are placed on top of each other, they create the letter "O" from different typefaces. (Bodoni, Helvetica, Futura, Garamond...etc)
The name of the typeface is printed on the plates. There is also simple, short and clear information about where and when it was created, the characteristics and the designer, printed at the back of the bottom plate.
It includes a paragraph about where we see the typeface in our daily lives. ex: "Major companies and products that have used Helvetica in their wordmarks include 3M, American Airlines, American Apparel, Jeep, Lufthansa, Marks & Spencer, Microsoft and Target Corporation. Helvetica is widely used by the United States government, for example federal income tax forms are done in Helvetica. In fact Helvetica has even been to space, it is used on the exterior of the Space Shuttle Orbiter."
Bodoni Plate
Some plates (like Futura Plates) come as a 3-piece set and different top pieces make the letter "O" be either bold or light.

shopping bag - logo is composed of two transparent layers
first 3-D sketch of "typo plates"
Each Moiré product comes with collectible cards that give a brief information about the specific typeface.
I created table-cloths by using different typographic elements from different typefaces.
(The name of the typeface is embroidered at the corner.)
