Song Origami

In progress.
First stage is Song Origami. The Opera is the second stage.

Formal studies as well as technical experiments on morphing folded origami-like forms based on audio input using software.

A series of words are sung in a number of different melodic variations. Using FFT analysis, the song is plotted across four time segments of the duration of a single sung word. The plot is then used for developing origami patterns.

The plotting is done in Processing, the origami folds are calculated in TreeMaker.

The nature of the audio is directly related to the nature of the environment. For example, given an identical audio sample, the forms in the series will look different when analyzed in a cold valley because the quality of the same audio (time of travel over distance, rate of dissipation over distance) varies between hot and cold climates, therefore shifting the resultant form.

Once paper folds are made for each segment, they will be attached together to create a dynamic origami of each sung word across time.

The final step is the translation of the completed dynamic origami to a flat pattern for sewing and forming to the body. Thus, a tentative architecture in case of an unexpected thunderstorm.
