“Migratory Habitats: Birds in the City; People in the Parks” engages two groups of travelers: people and birds, through the adaptive re-use of a unique urban artifact, The Chicago Water Tank. With changes in urban infrastructure, the tanks have evolved from functional structures to iconic markers in the urban landscape. Chicago’s water tanks are an essential part of the city’s heritage both visually and functionally. This project attempts to answer the questions: how much of these urban artifacts can be removed while maintaining their historical and social significance to the city of Chicago? Can demolition be an advanced form of preservation? The project advances an awareness of urban environments as concentrations of natural environments, clusters and accumulations along human migratory routes throughout the macro-environment.
