an artists space and a public place in the design of a park and factory for the arts in the Gowanus Canal district of Brooklyn, NY. Our strategy elevates the park to the level of an adjacent train trestle, then establishes a creative hub for artists and the surrounding community by tucking structures below the park. A matrix of buildings and atriums inform the park above by shaping plateaus and fissures in the park’s topography. A derelict manufactured gas plant is transformed from a barrier in the urban fabric into a cultural destination and node. In the 1980s, Peter Eisenman wrote of the concept of the site as palimpsest, a tablet or manuscript written on several times, with older layers still visible. Landscape architect James Corner describes a process where “new ways of marking are overlaid upon the old, producing collagic and weathered overlays” in the landscape. The “residua” created from this topographic palimpsest “provide loci for the remembrance, renewal, and transfiguration of a culture’s relationship to the land.” Rather than masking a damaging past, the Fulton Cultural Park reveals the site’s industrial heritage through palimpsest. By reusing structures and remediating polluted soil on site, spaces are reclaimed for the public to enjoy. Visitors to the park can explore the “relics” and wonder what processes occurred there, questioning our society’s past and future impacts on the environment. While contamination creates the challenge of dealing with large volumes of toxic soils, it provides an opportunity for a remediative landscape intervention at the Fulton Gas Works. By reversing the decades of damaging effects of the manufactured gas process, the Gas Works is reclaimed as it is transformed into a new cultural landscape. In its introduction of culture and the arts, the Fulton Cultural Park weaves a juxtaposition of old and new, creating a post-industrial landscape that merges stewardship with culture. Experimenting with patterns for an institutional-scale extensive green roof using 50% modular paving and 50% vegetation (2'x1' pre-grown LiveRoof plant trays). I developed the concept for a large senior home where the roof would be visually accessible from many high-rise apartments. Adapting the pattern from the "log cabin" style of quilt blocks, I developed a quilt-inspired design to give the green roof a sense of nostalgic familiarity.
