<description>A poster I did for Maine hip hop artist Spose. He (Spose) wanted a provocative image as the focus of the poster. I did a bunch of brainstorming and the 2 main ideas i had arrived at were, 1- a person smoking a crayon and 2- Darth Vader in a Run DMC kinda style. For some reason, I felt compelled to illustrate Darth Vader w/ the classic Run DMC brimmed hat, giant gold chain necklace, and Addidas track suit style stripes down the sleeve. I thought it was clever or funny (looking at it now, not so sure it is either). But Spose didn't think it was quite the image he was looking for (and looking back i agree...i'm not convinced the illustration is that good to be honest) and suggested an image of himself w/ a skull instead of his face (ala Guns n Roses' Appetite for Destruction). Once I finished the illustration I really liked this poster much better than when it had the Vader illustration. Spose liked it much better...and really that's what I'm really looking for in the end...a happy client.

<description>Mark Curdo asked me to design a poster for his record label's 5th Anniversary show. He had asked a bunch of people to create different posters for the same event. Mark didn't give any specific creative direction although he threw around a couple of suggestions for imagery. I didn't end up using any of the things he suggested. I could have used image of the bands playing the show...but I decided, in my mind, that the show was really a celebration of Mark's contribution to the Portland music scene. So I illustrated Mark. And then I did a sort of loose 'communist propaganda' style poster. The image makes Mark look like a tyrant...w/ all the red and his crossed arms, but really Mark is a very easy going and agreeable person.

This was also the first 'portrait' style illustration I did, where I thought, 'i'm finally getting the hang of this'. I'm looking forward to doing more experimenting w/ this style of illustration.

<description>I'm a fan of textures and layers and colors...if you haven't already picked up on that. I struggled a bit w/ concept on this at first. Until Olivia mentioned something about a mermaid tattoo that she had, that she loved. I asked her to send me a pic of the tattoo. I started to illustrate the tattoo and the concept sort of came together for me. Olivia's music has a garage-ish punk rock sound but w/ a stoner rock vibe. Gritty and melodic. I tried to balance the bright pink and cyan colors w/ dirty paper textures and nasty personal ads (background texture). I feel the juxtaposition works well in this case.

<description>This package was the 2nd album design I've done for Jeff. Jeff is generous enough to let me riff on ideas and do my thing. He really liked the image of the plane. So he purchased it from a stock photo place and sent it to me. I developed the passport/travel theme around that. Jeff also wanted to include some images of his grandfather, who had been a pilot in the military. He sent me some images and I used various bits and pieces of them within the design...putting a real personal touch on the design. Jeff writes very heartfelt and emotional lyrics so the images of family is very fitting.
