New York, NY, 2009 A collaboration with Joshua Stein. Reef investigates the role emerging material technology can play in the sensitive reprogramming of architectural and public space. Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs), a category of metals that change shape according to temperature, offer the possibility of efficient, fluid movement without the mechanized motion of earlier technologies.

Operating at a molecular level, this motion parrells that of plants and lower level organisms that are considered responsive but not conscious. A field of sunflowers as they track the sun across the sky or a reef covered with sea anemones, offer image of the type of motion this technology affords. Its use in practical applications has been limited to the medical and aerospace fields as well as novelty toys - the super exclusive vs. the trite. Despite the potential of this technology, there have been few serious attempts to test its possibilities at the scale of architectural environments. Reef's unique exploration of technology shifts from the biomimetic to the bikinetic while liberating and extending architecture's capacity to produce a sense of willfulness.

In 2010 Denver Botanic Gardens unveiled a new signature indoor orchid display area, Marnie’s Pavilion. This two-story space acts as a mid-grounds anchor, connecting the Gardens’ landmark Boettcher Memorial Conservatory building and a suite of new greenhouses and orangery. In addition to providing an important indoor display environment, complete with rock outcroppings and waterfall, this atrium area leads to a specialized botanical illustration classroom and the horticultural offices.</description>

Department of Cultural Affairs, 2009
Lumenscape is a large-scale art installation located at the Solair Building above the Wilshire &#38; Western Rail Station in Los Angeles. An undulating environment of shifting light, the piece activates the entry wall at the top of the public stairway and serves as a luminous gateway in relation to the underground subway and the intense speed of the nearby traffic intersection.

The project explores the potential of haptic sensations within the normally reserved public space by offering textural surfaces and scales that provoke visual and tactile exploration. This installation creates a sophisticated animation for the new transit-oriented KOAR development project, which combines the Metro station entryway, retail shops, and residential units. The materials included recycled acrylic and aluminum, and the softly changing lights are low-energy LED fixtures.Thermo-Formed Acrylic, Stainless Steel, Low Energy LED backlighting

Composed of hundreds of unique stainless steel strips, this project is an experiment in how mass and gravity, along with an force-feedback fabrication technique can create a carefully tuned lattice structure. At 75' in height, the project passes through 5 separate floors and sub-departments of a visual arts school, offering each level a unique view of the project.

The installation is a three-dimensional resultant of multiple two-dimensional photographs that drive various qualitative values in the project. Qualities such as projection distance, degree of curvature, and connection locations are quantified by pixel-level color values extracted from a series of photographs taken around the site.

The fabrication of the project included the development of a physics engine application that was responsible for calculating the catenary curvature of the strips based on the mass of the material between connection points.

Historically, projects incorporating motion typically tend towards function and efficiency in that the justification for movement is in some way to serve the user. This research aims to shift the argument from validity of movement to the desire for responsiveness and behavior. We suggest that the historic fixedness of architecture has always relied heavily on static plan and parti for internal division and meaning. We wonder how this attitude may change if architecture were to embrace strategies in which motion and variability were favored over mass and anchorage.

To do this, this proposal investigates the potentials of Shape Memory Alloy (SMAs) metals that vary their dimension according to temperature, as a means for smooth, responsive locomotion within variable surfaces throughout the home.

The Haptic House responds to it's inhabitants in several ways. The first may be considered a "scripted" response, one in which the time of day and day of the year influences a particular action. Complimentary to this type of response, is the direct reactive response. In this mode, the architecture responds to real time actions and behaviors of the user. In this way, a room may activate and form itself from the ceiling when the home senses the proximity of the user.

In addition to typical domestic conditions, the project was to focus on the accomodation of three main activities, Living, Entertaining, and Meditation. To engage the goals of the project, two architectural objectives were considered, [1] Develop a continuous architectural wall that encompasses and negotiates a living space, office, bedroom, den, and outdoor meditation space. [2] Explore how a smart interconnective system, created from simple, repeating modules, may offer a substantial degree of formal and organizational flexibility.

This project continues an investigation in how final form and presence are understood not by the un-bridled possibilities of digital space, but rather through an inherent logic and liberating limitation of the analog material itself. A self-imposed strategy relies on an aggregation of identical rectangular modules, though exploits the ‘slop’ introduced in an oversized connecting joint. This in-built, exaggerated tolerance within each joint, allows for the development of complex tectonics through the wall’s surface.

This pavilion is intended to be a functional, site-specific, installation that provides an appealing respite with shade, rain protection and visual interest throughout the year. This installation will be integrated into a key event space for the Gardens, offering a place for social interaction and special events. At the terminus of several walking paths, the designated plaza will be a core circulation space that overlooks a key water feature, the horseshoe-shaped “Monet Pond.” Also within close proximity will be the entrance a future expansion of a Japanese tea garden and bonsai pavilion.

The purpose of this Signature Pavilion would be to provide shade, rain protection, circulation and visual interest while maintaining an outdoor environment. Since DBG outdoor functions are more sporadic during winter months, the pavilion is designed to be surfaced during the operational months, and stripped down to its structure during the winter. This approach will allow the otherwise heavy snow accumulation in Denver to pass through the structure during the winter months. This allows the pavilion to operate as a hybrid between a typical rigid building and a tent-like typology.

Undulating lighted façade system for parking garages serves as a gateway to the new Washington Nationals Baseball stadium. The landscape of aluminum screens is derived from the basic principles of baseball pitches.

Baseball is a game of rules of play and the laws of physics. Along with these constraints, however, it is also a game of psychology and personality. Nowhere is this more beautifully expressed than in the showdown between pitcher and batter. It is here that almost every play in baseball starts. Anyone who listens to a baseball announcer has heard the terms change-up, breaking ball, and rising fastball, and yet, it is hard to get an experiential understanding of the nature of each of these pitches. This project embodies the landscape of possible pitches, each with their own personality, that might appear in the dual between pitcher and batter. Los Angeles, CA 2004/2005
Architecture is based, historically, on a logic of stacking and assembling, but how does bending, as an operation, change our understanding of shingling and framing? Serial Departure represents a starting point, with respect to research, towards a responsive and possibly reactive architecture. The project began with an interest in a technique of steam-bending wood. This interest led to the methodical research of historical precedents including glass slumping, ship-building, and Thonet/Eames furniture.

By projecting digital information onto an adjustable fabrication bed, a system emerges in which curves developed in the software could be precisely replicated with a piece of wood. A variable jig composed of a pegboard and adjustable cams allows for the production of an almost unlimited number of unique curvatures, moving beyond the limitations of one mold equals one form. More interesting is that this same process allows for material feedback into the digital model. If at any point, the curvature exceeds the bending capacity of the wood, the computer model is adjusted to match the maximum profile the wood is able to bear. In this way, a feedback loop is created as information flows from the digital, to the analog, and back into the digital. Formed Acrylic, Stainless Steel, Low Energy LED backlighting
