Created by: Christine Liang & Rachel Rose Ulgado

This is an assignment for Informatics 133: User Interaction Software.

Description of the components and architecture of the system:

We decided to build our multi-touch device using a box, webcam, picture frame, and piece of paper. We used this video for reference. We took the top off of our box. Then we placed our webcam inside of the box, taped it to the center, and then we placed the glass picture frame on top of the box. We attached a piece of paper to the glass frame.

After we created our multi-touch device, we plugged it into one of our computers and got our multi-touch inputs through Community Core Vision (CCV). We adjusted the settings on CCV to make sure that the blobs that were being captured were an appropriate size. We then calibrated the touch events being received on our multi-touch device using CCV.

We imported source code from MT4J, and used the MT4j version 0.95 full release. For this assignment, we decided to extend the advanced.drawing example that was included with MT4J.

Our extension involves adding a button to the frame of the interface that allows the user to create and add rectangles on the screen. After a user clicks this rectangle button, a white rectangle appears. The user can then use our multi-touch device to tap on that rectangle; with one finger, the user can tap the rectangle to make it change colors. The user can also resize a rectangle by using two fingers to pinch and expand the corners of the rectangle as well as rotate it with two fingers by using a rotating gesture on the multi-touch device. The user can create multiple rectangles and drag them by using one finger for each rectangle. The user can drag these rectangles simultaneously.

social TV, research, prototyping

Winter 2012 - Present

As part of my independent research for my informatics major, I am working with post-doctoral researcher Karen Tang and fellow undergraduate, Paolo Arrastia, in the Social and Technological Action Research Group (STAR).

We are currently researching social television systems and how different modes of communication (for example, voice chat and text chat) can be combined with content viewing in different situations (for example, synchronously and asynchronously, collocated and non-collocated) to create rich and interactive experiences for users. We are also looking to see how other interactions, such as tagging content and game play, can also make these experiences better.

The first part of our research involves looking at previous studies and research surrounding this topic. This helps us in figuring out design guidelines for the system that we plan on creating. Additionally, we are looking at existing social TV applications such as IntoNow and Miso, as well as websites such as Hulu, Vimeo, and Youtube. Evaluating these systems and services allows us to examine what features are currently being offered to users and how they can be improved.

In the next few months, we hope to implement a functional prototype of our social TV system, which will be an application suitable for use on an Android tablet device.

We have completed a few iterations in paper-prototyping and sketching, and we are currently creating mockups of different interaction flows using Balsamiq.

Here are a few of my preliminary sketches:

"A Mobile Guide to the High Desert" is a group project in Informatics 132, "Project in Human-Computer Interaction," for spring quarter, 2012. This project is a work in progress.

The purpose of this project is to create an immersive environment for the High Desert area in California as a mobile application for tablet devices. This application aims to foster interest in preservation as well as nostalgia for the high desert area and its history. We put our prototype on an iPad to simulate user testing to the best of our ability, and we were able to gather useful feedback about its usability and aesthetic quality.

Here are a few examples of our mockups:

MASYC Integration Management System (MIMS) is a group project for Informatics 191A-B-C (Senior Design).

The MASYC Group's overall business goals focus on meeting their clients' needs through their EnterpriseOne applications and supporting technologies. Team BGC's project on the MASYC Integration Management Solution (MIMS) supports these goals by helping MASYC and their clients understand status reports and information that is communicated through EnterpriseOne and third party/proprietary software through an easily navigable and understandable web interface. Currently clients of MASYC are forced to use a system that has a high learning curve and is not intuitive.

Completion of this project will focus on creating an environment for both MASYC and their clients that allows for an easy way to track the status of integration reports. Integration status reports display both successes where everything is on task, as well as errors where certain parts of an integration could have failed for various reasons. Users would log onto MIMS to view these integration status reports. The overarching goal of our system is to eliminate the confusion and complexity that comes with the MMS error reporting.

This project will be completed early 2013. During the first phase of the project (Spring Quarter 2012), we were heavily involved in requirements engineering and designing the user interface of the system. The second and third phases of the project will consist of implementation (using HTML, CSS, Javascript, and PHP).

Here are a few of our preliminary user interface designs (created with Balsamiq):

Project Mentor: Professor Cory Knobel

"Something Happened Here" is a group project in Informatics 148, "Project in Ubiquitous Computing."

Project Description:
"Gather requirements and prototype a mobile application for user tagging of activities that happen at specific times and places. Similar in concept to a mashup of Twitter and Foursquare, the system aims to provide users a lightweight interface to quickly tag moments where "something happened here" and save to a database capturing message, time, and location. Potential data viewing interfaces are (1) an aggregated representation of all messages laid over a map for planners, designers, and others who wish to understand what happens in a particular place over time, (2) an augmented reality interface that allows users to see what others have tagged in the place where they are, and (3) a timeline/map interface that allows annotations for emerging forms of blogging that centers narrative on the actions associated with times and places. The project will involve requirements gathering, low-fidelity prototyping, conducting user studies for feedback, and development of a high-fidelity prototype showing the interactivity of the system. Prerequisite: at least one team member should be able to program for interactive interfaces or for mobile applications."

We followed Bill Buxton's "Design Funnel" method. During our first phase, we focused on general overall concepts. To do this, we brainstormed with sticky notes. We posited that there were three main things to think about - what users would be using this, how they would post on the application, and how they would view posts on the application. We further split this up into 'must have', 'should have', and 'would be nice to have' features.

<img src="http://payload54.cargocollective.com/1/6/216537/3381899/brainstorming.jpg" width="640" height="478" width_o="640" height_o="478" src_o="http://payload54.cargocollective.com/1/6/216537/3381899/brainstorming_o.jpg" data-mid="21839780" border="0" align="left"/>

Our second phase was 'exploratory,' and we used this time to sketch a lot of our ideas. This included storyboarding to imagine how our users would be using the app in real world contexts, and sketching as many interfaces we could think of.

<img src="http://payload54.cargocollective.com/1/6/216537/3381899/sketches.jpg" width="640" height="478" width_o="640" height_o="478" src_o="http://payload54.cargocollective.com/1/6/216537/3381899/sketches_o.jpg" data-mid="18144165" border="0" align="left"/>

The third phase of our work was 'clarification,' which allowed us to converge on a unified design idea.

The fourth and final phase of our work is 'resolution.' During this phase, we created Balsamiq Mockups of the application we envisioned.

VidCoach: iOS application, video modeling for autism

Faculty mentor: Professor Gillian Hayes
Undergraduate students: Van Erick Custodio, Katherine Nguyen, Rachel Rose Ulgado, Aaron Waterhouse, Rachel Weiner

Technology has long been used in the autism space as assistive tools for therapy; one such way is through video-modeling, which allows autistic individuals to model their own behavior after watching a video of someone else performing a task (for example, brushing teeth or setting the table), or even by watching themselves completing a task successfully (also known as self-modeling). Video modeling is particularly useful because it can present concepts and instruction in an engaging way and can also provide useful feedback for people with autism.

In this research, we aim to gain a better understanding of how video-modeling can be used to help adolescents with autism. The scope of our project focuses on adolescents with autism who are making the transition from school into the workplace.

We are currently prototyping for our future iOS video modeling application, tentatively titled, "VidCoach."

Our work in video modeling for autism was presented at the UCI Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) Symposium on May 19, 2012. Here is a link to our presentation slides.

Here a few of our Balsamiq Mockups:

June - August, 2011

I was awarded the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Information Technology (SURF-IT).

Project Advisor: Professor Gillian Hayes

Worked closely with graduate students Meg Cramer and Martin Hommer as well as faculty in the Social and Technological Action Research Group (STAR).

The purpose of this research and is to discover ways that teachers can use modern technologies to teach their students more effectively and efficiently. More specifically, we are interested in exploring how technology can be used for capturing student thinking and reflection, a tool that is commonly used to reinforce student learning.

My roles in this project include helping to plan and run workshops with elementary school teachers. We ran these workshops to come up with a set of design guidelines for an application that captures student thinking through various media forms, encourages reflection, and allows for group collaboration with the exchange of content.

We developed an application prototype for Android called "ReflectWithMe" and held concept validation sessions with our elementary school teacher participants to examine the effectiveness of our design guidelines.

I was to present the results of my work at the UROP Undergraduate Research Symposium at the end of the SURF-IT program, but I had appendicitis!

Here's a link to my presentation slides.

February 2011 - Present

Faculty Mentors:
Professor Donald J. Patterson, Informatics
Professor Peter Krapp, Film & Media Studies
Dr. Garnet Hertz, Informatics

Awarded the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) Fellowship in the Multidisciplinary Design Program (MDP).

I am passionate about seeing development and growth in communities of people who share similar creative interests. As a fellow hobbyist, crafter, and “D.I.Y-er,” I am constantly inspired to learn new skills and create projects, and have always wanted to inspire others to do the same.

"The Design, Art, and Technology Hackerspace (DATSpace) aims to lower the barrier for students to advance in their creative projects and to drive them to innovate. From tinkering on an old radio, to crocheting a rainbow cake, to engineering a robot that plays drums, or using M&Ms to make a portrait of your dog. We are passionate about making things, physical or virtual or interdimensional, and we want a place to kick-back and make our awesome projects with ease."

This project allows me to work closely with fellow undergraduate peers and faculty from different academic disciplines in establishing a creative space for the UCI community to work on DIY projects.

Much of the work I do at DATSpace includes helping plan, market, and host workshops that allow people to learn handy skills that can be applied to their own projects. We are also branching out this year by encouraging and helping students and faculty (who are not core members of DATSpace) plan and host their own workshops.

I have personally hosted the following workshops:

Intro to Crocheting
Intro to Embroidery

Past DATSpace workshops also include:

Intro to Arduino
Intro to Processing
Play Dough Circuits
Bead Sprites
Make a Terrarium

Future workshops/events:

Intro to Lilypad Arduino (to be hosted by me)
DATSpace's First Hack-a-Thon

To view additional photos from our workshops, please visit DATSpace's Flickr.
