In Preparation For
As they are found by relevant tags and contexts, collected from a web crowdsourced data, Google image results can be thought of as cultural definitions to any given term. In viewing these images, we extract meaning from the images to pair with the search query. In this thinking, Google is fed a word or phrase, and it returns a visual depiction of how we as an interconnected society define that term: a definition derived from clicks, keywords, and links. We are not asking "What does this look like?" or "How do this look to me?"; we are asking "How does society think this should look?" For example, searching for images of "home" displays the Internet's (as a collection of online contributors, curators, and viewers; for all intents and purposes, a reflection of contemporary society) definition: namely the icon for a web browser's homepage.

As search results, Google’s images are not personal definitions, they are mutually agreed upon definitions formed by society. These images are bereft of all emotional connections and personal experience, and as such they do not impact the individual in the same sensational way memories and first-hand visuals do. They seem foreign and possibly incorrect.

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding in our use of image search engines: it is, in truth, a tool for seeing terms devoid of all emotional detachment. In theory, a more accurate description of fetching image results is distancing oneself from the immediate subjectivity they bring to the table. While not favoring objectivity entirely—these decided visual descriptions still come from individual opinions, albeit opinions shared by many—retrieving an image search is a tool for removing the individual’s experience and emotional attachment to an idea.

Application Thereof
These last few months I got caught up in Cooper Union and needed to disconnect. I am creating a series of drawings defaulting all personal connection to societal denotation—forfeiting all my emotional attachment in favor of how the public defines Cooper Union.

		<description>I was wondering how you can translate perceptional distortions in time to physical space: when time seems to crawl, or fly.

I tried to rearrange the dimensions, specifically eliminating the current third dimension, allowing the forth dimension to overtake its position. Depth is replaced by time.

&#60;img src="http://payload49.cargocollective.com/1/2/68171/3289573/wireframe.jpg" width="600" height="442" width_o="600" height_o="442" src_o="http://payload49.cargocollective.com/1/2/68171/3289573/wireframe_o.jpg" data-mid="16870312"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

I imagined a structure in which time becomes the third dimension and determines how the structure looks just as much as point and line. A grid like structure that would correlate to the Highline and the time it takes to walk it, broken down block by block.

&#60;img src="http://payload49.cargocollective.com/1/2/68171/3289573/8.png" width="600" height="442" width_o="600" height_o="442" src_o="http://payload49.cargocollective.com/1/2/68171/3289573/8_o.png" data-mid="16870099"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Time is stretched across the grid like canvas over frames. The amount of material (time) between each cell of the grid is directly proportional to the time spent walking each block: more time spent on a block means more material allocated to the cell. Less time on block required time to be stretched thin, like a band of latex pulled apart.

Photos of each block as seen from the Highline are printed over the latex-like time to show the physical distortion in a more tangible context. When time sags between two increments of the grid, the photos stretch to cover the extra material.

But by nature, this structure couldn't exist in actuality. The creation of the structure would give it a third dimension and disrupt the translation of time to space. So the question was raised: how do you create without allowing it depth?

In this sense, a computer model offered the ideal solution: a pseudo-dimensional structure embedded in a 2-dimensional plane.

		<description>What's most interesting about the difference between coding language and written language is the disparity in clarity. Written language is vague enough to allow for multiple interpretations. Coding language does not. It is concise, specific, and has only one meaning.

01100011 01100101 01100011 01101001 00100000 01101110 00100111 01100101 01110011 01110100 00100000 01110000 01100001 01110011 00100000 01110101 01101110 01100101 00100000 01110000 01101001 01110000 01100101 00101110

When written in binary, "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" presents a phrase that cannot be fully understood by human nor computer. The human cannot interpret the numbers into words, and the computer cannot interpret meaning and symbolism beyond the numbers.

&#60;img src="http://payload37.cargocollective.com/1/2/68171/3040557/Screen shot 2012-03-20 at 3.17.52 AM.png" width="670" height="449" width_o="1335" height_o="896" src_o="http://payload37.cargocollective.com/1/2/68171/3040557/Screen shot 2012-03-20 at 3.17.52 AM_o.png" data-mid="15505586"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
So I tried to force the computer to understand.
[http://tylerpaige.com/secrets/thisisnotapipe_process3.php]

I wrote the text, scanned it in, used OCR software to "read" my handwriting, opened the computer's interpretation of my writing, and searched for meaning. I searched my harddrive for answers and opened every result it came up with. I searched the dictionary, I searched Google.

Still, I feel like the computer didn't understand.

&#60;img src="http://payload37.cargocollective.com/1/2/68171/3040557/alphabet_layout.png" width="600" height="3074" width_o="600" height_o="3074" src_o="http://payload37.cargocollective.com/1/2/68171/3040557/alphabet_layout_o.png" data-mid="15504244"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
So, I thought somehow I could guide it in the right direction. And I created an alphabet for binary that related to the path the computer took to try and find a meaning to this 5-word phrase.

And I told it, don't stop until you figure out the meaning.

And now I'm giving you context:
