A balance between form and function, a hierarchy to lead and guide the eye. I first fell in love with design while working at my college newspaper and reading Tim Harrower's books. Idea The basic philosophy for the redesign was to try to present facts in a bold, modern, slightly irreverent style. Nuts and Bolts Everything was laid out on a 10-column grid, with a 10 point document grid. Vertical rules were 0.5 point and horizontal were 5 point. The font family for everything was Poynter. Execution My goal throughout the semester was not to always create the flashiest designs; I was more interested in creating consistent, professional design throughout each page of every issue. Front Page I reverted the flag to an older design to go for a more traditional look, which I felt would contrast better against the more modern style. In order to give the page a more professional look, I changed the opinion bylines to the standard style of the newspaper. Also, I ran the masthead along the left side instead of leaving it clumped down at the bottom.
