ring, city, network, cityvision, past, future

The Past can exist without a Future but certainly there is no Future without a Past. The Future will always be a consequence of habitants choices, attitudes, politics, rules and city planning. The Past has set the ground rules that allowed and forced New York City to be what it is today: A vertical structure that represent the pillars for the next city to come.

Ring City is a new construction concept juxtaposed onto the existing vertical structure, literally using the existing tall constructions as structures to support its ring-shaped buildings. This new concept allows the city to expand horizontally while continuing its typical vertical growth.

This new concept consists of an innovative horizontal construction methodology, a series of rings with different radius built at different levels. At times, the rings overlap with each other and end up creating a new network system. These rings are supported by the surrounded buildings and use its cores to provide a vertical link to the street level.

Each ring is made of a self-supporting structure with a multipurpose void in its interior. The interior space is to be programmed at will and even changed from time to time according to the needs of its inhabitants.

Magnetic strips are attached to the rings structure. These magnetic strips are the tracks for the transportation pods that provide access to its occupants through the entire length and space of each ring. These moving objects allow their users to arrive to any destiny within the ring.

Ring City becomes a new city with a park and passageway at the roof level, creating new outstanding views over the city. The roofs also have the function to capture, clean and reuse rain water. The gas emissions in New York City would be significantly reduced with the help of Ring City’s green roof areas.

A new Future built on the existing Past.

loft, future, gargoyle, urban, corner, sphere

I have a wish!
I wish there was a communal space for all of us in our building. A space where we could meet and enjoy the company of each other. We became too isolated these days. Enough! It’s time to open up and share our experiences with our fellow neighbors and friends.

The project Lofty Corner envisions a generous space located at the corner of a roof of a typical building in a typical urban setting. This space is to be used by all its tenants and can be easily accessed from the roof level. In its essence, it is a revival of the ancient gargoyles, these peculiar creatures with the power to eradicate bad spirits away from the buildings. Lofty Corner is also in itself an alien space that enhances the life quality of its users.

It is built of 487 equal triangular pieces, forming the shape of a sphere with a radius of 5m/16.5feet. It would be assembled on site and reproduced multiple times across the urban environment. Each piece contains three pre-fabricated structural mullions linked together and holding a frameless glass system in a triangulated shape. Each glass piece contains a reflective interlayer of photovoltaic cells. This interlayer has the function to capture the sun light and also protect its interior from malicious UV rays from the sun. The captured sunlight is then transformed into electricity and used to light the loft at night. A thin stretched nylon net is added at roof grade, providing a safe and relaxed way for its users to enjoy its interior.

This innovative space has the power to reflect the city growth on its mirrored skin. It allows each user not to be seen from the interior while having the full capacity to perfectly see and monitor its surroundings.

Lofty Corner provides multiple solutions to an enhanced communal urban life. It is an efficient way to bring people together while relating itself to the city. It responds to three fundamental urban values: interaction, observation and sharing.

New York City grows vertically, so should its public space!
Sky Network is a multi-layered bridge network system laid out on top of the original New York’s 1811 orthogonal grid plan.

This new network system reacts to its urban context by connecting to surrounding buildings at strategic locations and detaching away from others, such as, monuments, parks or empty lots. The new system occupies only 20% to 30% of the street area below, cantilevering from anchor to anchor and avoiding any columns along the way. The already complex street tissue remains unchanged. At the anchor locations, the nearby areas are to be developed and enhanced commercially while vertical egresses are provided inside the buildings.

In its essence, it is a lightweight structure with motion sensors that would result in street lighting and signage below. LED panels are installed on the bridge’s underside and provide a constant “studio lighting” for the street life below.

Sky Network is also a vehicle free zone that allows for a free flow of pedestrians and other eco-friendly ways of transportation. Unexpected and exciting new directional views and space types are instantly generated throughout the journey.

It's a new flexible organism that questions and provokes the original rigid orthogonal grid system. Rather than imposing an urban structure, as it happens with an orthogonal net, it adjusts locally to the constructed territory. It is also a solution for a potential flooding scene, allowing the city to maintain its activity throughout and after the natural disaster.

Sky Network presents a long-term answer to the constant pressure for new territories and flows of people within the island of Manhattan. A progressive system for a sustainable future, in which networks can be laid out on top of each other, fulfilling the city's vertical tendency to reach the sky. In return, the urban life-style quality of New York City is continuously improved and enhanced.

In a World dominated by contagious individualism, where the digital media and social networking are considered the fifth power, where public demonstrations are unsafe and restricted: It is time to ACT!

Digital Revolution is a paradigm shift made possible by a virtual interface available for all who want to join a specific cause, regardless of their physical location. It’s a powerful tool capable of joining individuals as different as a young boy from India to an old lady from Alaska. The entire World population together for a cause and through the usage of a simple internet connection.

The data would be collected by the interface and transmitted to a physical urban context. Each individual would be placed in a particular plaza through a 3D hologram that would be projected from the surrounding urban infrastructure. This system would also transmit sound and time slots for podium speeches, mimicking a typical rally.

Protesters on the other hand, would be comfortably and safely at home monitoring live statistics, news and achievements. Simultaneously they could be active by writing manifestos, blogs, sending emails, and sharing their ideals with the World. In the plaza, the cloned individual would have a presence. The otherwise limited physical space, would now become unlimited, reaching statistics beyond our imagination.

The media and social networking functioning together to achieve immediate and plausible results in an eco-friendly and accessible way.

1. A single platform for a single cause!
2. The unification of the entire population!
3. A clear and useful Digital Revolution for all!

This project envisions a distinct approach towards moving around the United States being also a revival of the act of traveling. Why traveling at high speed? Why having the final destiny always defined? And why always departing and arriving on a tight schedule? Nowadays, everything is set and everyone is always running around. It is time to reconsider the act of traveling and start enjoying it accordingly.

The Passing Cloud is an innovative and environmentally friendly method of transportation that doesn’t require expensive steel tracks or concrete highways. It is made of a series of spherical balloons that form the shape of a cloud. Its inner stainless steel structure is covered with heavy weight tensile nylon fabric. During the journey, It moves according to prevailing winds speed and direction at the time of travel. Since it moves with the wind, no wind is ever felt during the trip, offering the passengers a full “floating sensation”.

It’s an unique journey. The feeling of floating in the atmosphere – on top of a cloud – with an open schedule and unknown final destiny. All National Ground would be potentially covered at virtually no cost and the help of the wind. The journey becomes your destiny.

The Portuguese landscape will soon be, once more, torn by the new high-speed train TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse). In order to guarantee its functionality, an infinite number of suspended cables in a web-like form are needed, as well as a permanent cut that will produce a constant mark in the landscape.

How to cross this boundary? Through an object that dematerializes itself but still keeps its relationship with the ground. This object is composed by a steel structure that makes a 25 degree angle with the surface of the Earth, defying gravity. There are two alternatives to cross the train line: one is at low-grade, because it is subterraneous, interior and visually isolated. The other one is above-grade, because it is aerial and exterior. The object dematerializes as it leaves the ground, as a result of a high-speed train that just passed by.

This passage allows to dynamically cross this dangerous border and add a new urban icon that intertwines and extrapolates itself along the train line.
