No matter what country you hail from or what league you follow, in New York City you are almost guaranteed to find a supporters group for your club. It's one of the greatest and grossest things about New York City; there is as much, if not more, passion for foreign teams from far away lands as there is for the local top flight side. It's despicable but hey, we're Americans, questionable behavior is nothing new for us.

'The Supporters' is a new series that tackles this issue as it traipses around NYC soccer culture hotspots, profiling supporters groups and their haunts. The pilot episode above visits O'Casey's Irish Bar & Restaurant, home of the NY Spurs. It's quality viewing despite the slightly unsavory subject matter. Well worth the watch.

<img src="http://payload167.cargocollective.com/1/5/165915/5646241/NY street.jpg" width="640" height="499" width_o="640" height_o="499" src_o="http://payload167.cargocollective.com/1/5/165915/5646241/NY street_o.jpg" data-mid="30475575" border="0" align="left"/>

It's happening. For the first time since the original NASL Cosmos made like your Nana and left the mean streets of the Bronx for the quiet life in New Jersey, true top flight soccer will be played in New York City beginning in 2015. And the ownership group? A serious power couple comprised of Manchester City's Sheik Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the New York Yankees.

Expansion is always a contentious issue, with many fans under the impression that new franchises should be awarded on some sort of sentimental basis. Many will say "Orlando deserves a team before New York gets a second one. The first one doesn't even sellout!". Or "how can a new NY MLS team NOT be the Cosmos?". Pro sports is a business. Period. "Deserving" a club doesn't pay the bills, comparing Harrison, NJ to Queens, NY is something of an apples & oranges situation and the Cosmos...well, that one's a bit complicated.

Regardless of what you think of NY2, if you're a fan of the game in America you'll have to give props to MLS if they manage to do what even the license-to-print-money that is the NFL could not do: get a new stadium built in the 5 boroughs. Respect.

Here's the story from the AP.

From the ESPN Press Release:

About Abby Head On

A phenom from Rochester, NY, Abby Wambach defied convention by spurning soccer dynasty North Carolina in favor of the University of Florida, an upstart program which, at the time, was only in its fourth year of existence. That decision paid off quickly, as in her 1998 freshman season Wambach helped the Gators nab the SEC’s first and only national championship in soccer – defeating the powerhouse Tar Heels in the final.

With four SEC Tournament titles, two SEC Player of the Year awards and the title of all-time leading scorer at Florida, Wambach positioned herself as a top pick in the 2002 WUSA draft. Selected by the Washington Freedom, she starred alongside icon Mia Hamm and earned a roster spot on an already talent-laden U.S. women’s national team, for which she has starred for the last decade.

Wambach cemented her spot in soccer lore in a quarterfinal match against Brazil in the 2011 World Cup, scoring a signature goal with her head in the waning seconds of extra time to prevent an embarrassing early exit from the tournament. Wambach’s heroics propelled her team to victory and ignited interest in women’s soccer.

Abby Head On shows how Wambach, recently honored as the 2012 FIFA Player of the Year, has made her mark on the sport and become one of the best this country has ever produced.

ESPN Films’ SEC “Storied” series continues with Abby Head On, premiering Wednesday, May 15, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Two things you need to know about Aurelien Collin: 1) he calls everyone "my man" regardless of whether you know him or not and 2) he's into dressing well. You may already know this but the viewers of Kansas City's Action News 41 may not. But roll the tape anyway, feel the Frenchness.

How many Bob Bradley-in-Egypt documentaries are we up to now? 2? No wait, 3? And that's not to mention closeups on ESPN and HBO. The latest is entitled "American Pharaoh" and is due to appear on PBS late '13/early '14.

Stoked that Bobby Blue Eyes is getting all this facetime right now but damn, can't someone get a camera on Klinsmann for a hot 6 months to commit the remainder of the current World Cup Qualifying to tape? Spread the love y'all. Spread the love.

On the day that the NBA's Jason Collins came out as a gay man, ABC's Nightline aired an intense, intimate feature on the also-out Robbie Rogers. With the cameras rolling, Robbie visits his family in California for the first time since coming out. Powerful, must-watch stuff.
