Sex on the beach was performed by an unknown individual on Hastings seafront in 2006. The performer seemed to tap into an unseen order of events happening around him at the time. Whether this was his intention is unclear.

		<description>[Work in Progress]

Assisted Suicide Walk- Across the South Downs Way is a collaborative project between myself and Louis Buckley (PhD candidate, Design Interactions).

PROPOSAL
Together we are designing a 100-mile conversation on the subject of suicide that will take place while walking across the South Downs Way a national trail that runs from Winchester to Beachy Head; a notorious suicide spot.

The walk will begin with the two of us contemplating our own personal experiences and thoughts on suicide and emotional health. To help work out what suicide means to us a cast of psychotherapists, volunteer Samaritans, academic experts on end of life issues and a shaman will join us on the walk.

As the walk develops small groups of up to 10-15 people will also join the conversation by contemplating and sharing their own experiences with the group. A series of planned talks and events that explore different aspects of suicide (historical, cultural, medical, psychological, personal, political) will take place at specific landmarks connected to suicide on the route.

After walking for 6 days the project will end when we reach Beachy Head; a 162-metre sheer drop from the edge of the UK and a metaphor for the fragility of our own existence.

		<description>Proposal 1.

ANGEL OF THE NORTH [Modification I] [Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England]

Proposal to attach Solar PV panels to the 54 metres (177 ft) wings of Antony Gormley's public sculpture to reduce the electricity bills of the residents of Low Fell, a suburb situated near to the public sculpture in the Borough of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/angel_of_north_2 small_8.png" width="450" height="361" width_o="450" height_o="361" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/angel_of_north_2 small_8_o.png" data-mid="27376861"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Using the facilities of the Newcastle University Climbing Club members of the Wanneys climbing club will practice scaling the 20 metre (66 ft) Angel of the North in a pre-enactment of the attaching of the solar PV panels to the sculpture.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/angel_of_north_close_up small.png" width="450" height="338" width_o="450" height_o="338" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/angel_of_north_close_up small_o.png" data-mid="27376301"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/rock_climber.jpg" width="450" height="337" width_o="450" height_o="337" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/rock_climber_o.jpg" data-mid="27342698"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Due to the Angel of the North's south easterly positioning it is predicted that this project could help cut Low Fell's electricity bills by 40%.

As with all contemporary Solar PV systems, after 25 years the original panels will need to be replaced. By 2037 synthetic biology will have evolved from using the photosynthetic properties of plants to harvest the sun's energy on manned space missions to more commercial applications.

Proposal 2.

ANGEL OF THE NORTH [Modification II] [Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England]

Proposal to encourage the growth of lichen on the Angel of the North by spraying its surface with a mixture of:
- milk
- flour
- yeast
- gelatin
- green algae powder
- water soluble fertilizer with micro-nutrients

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/angel_of_north_milk_2_small.png" width="450" height="184" width_o="450" height_o="184" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/angel_of_north_milk_2_small_o.png" data-mid="27382506"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/sprayer_small.jpg" width="450" height="260" width_o="450" height_o="260" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/sprayer_small_o.jpg" data-mid="27388713"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;Motorised jet sprayer modified to reach 20 metres [with the wind]

By using the photosynthetic element of the lichen living on the Angel of the North's surface solar energy can be harvested and distributed to the surrounding suburbs.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/lichen_2_close_up small.png" width="450" height="336" width_o="450" height_o="336" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/lichen_2_close_up small_o.png" data-mid="27378754"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/angel_of_the_north__detail_3.jpg" width="450" height="300" width_o="450" height_o="300" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/angel_of_the_north__detail_3_o.jpg" data-mid="27294160"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/angel_of_north_lichen_2 small.png" width="450" height="347" width_o="450" height_o="347" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/7/229418/5080130/angel_of_north_lichen_2 small_o.png" data-mid="27382536"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

		<description>In 2009 the Canadian poet Christian Bök used biotechnology to take William Burroughs statement "the word is virus" beyond science fiction to scientific fact by placing a poem inside the DNA sequence of an e-coli bacteria cell to create what he has called “living poetry ” in The Xenotext Project.

 In the same manner as Bok this project proposes a hypothetical scientific realisation of Arthur Rimbaurd's synesthesia poem Voyelles. Instead of each vowel being assigned a different colour (as was Rimbaurd's original intention) the Vowels project proposes that the sound of each vowel releases a different neurotransmitting chemical in the brain, giving the poem an intensely sensuous dimension.

 Brain scan of neurotransmitting chemicals released when exposed to the sound of vowels.

How could this proposition effect poetry and the spoken word of the future?

Extract from MA dissertation.

VOYELLES
By Arthur Rimbaud

A black, E white, I red, O blue,- vowels.
One day I will recount your latent births:
A - furry black corset of spectacular flies
That thrum around the savage smells:

Gulfs of shade, E- whiteness of steam and tents,
Proud glaciers’ lances, white kings, quivering umbels,
I – purples, expectorated blood, the laugh of lovely lips
In anger or in the ecstasies of penitence.

U- eons, divine vibrations or viridian seas,
The peace of animal- strewn pastures and of furrows
That alchemy imprints on broad studious brows.

O- the final trump of strange and strident sounds,
Silences traversed by Worlds and Angles:
O- Omega, the violet ray of His Eyes!

		<description>Hoax Project

Chemical weapons have been used in warfare since the First World War. From the beginning a constant disagreement has existed within the military as to how effective biological weapons might be.

The first position taken by the United States military was that such weapons were a waste of resources. Then, during the cold war the Soviet Union was reported to be researching biological weapons on a grand scale. The main issue faced by the Soviet Union in its quest for germ warfare supremacy was in its delivery. How could they deliver a deadly sustainable bacteria without a boomerang effect occurring?

The United States military position became one of defense against a biological attack and began immunizing its citizens. Not wanting to create a mass panic they secretly developed the perfect chemical delivery device.

The  domestic air freshener.

There has still been no mass scale chemical attack on the west.

		<description>The America Ground [A Retrospective History]

In the 1800's a group of local residents moved onto land which had been reclaimed from the sea during a large storm on the south coast of England and set up their own working community. Realising that this community fell outside of its legal jurisdiction the crown head of state put pressure on the local council to evict the group.

In defiance of the crown and the local county council the community raised the American flag and claimed themselves to be the 28th state of America.
The occupation was short lived and the story of the America Ground faded into history as quickly as it had appeared from the sea.

In the 1990's Hastings was suffering culturally and economically. Local historian Dennis Collins encouraged the Hastings council to use the story of the America Ground to give a new identity and sense of community to the area where the America Ground once stood.

These two films explore the America Ground folklore from two different perspectives. In the first film Dennis Collins tells the story based upon the many facts that he has accumulated over the years. The second film collages conversations with local shop keepers [who re-tell the story as a local mythology] with local geology.

The new short story by Barry Stafford.

Blackpool has been stolen. The land where it once stood is now barren. The only evidence that Blackpool had ever been there were the shocked residents and a stick of rock found at the spot where the Blackpool tower once stood....
