		<description>Mike (WLS owner/creative director) and I teamed up to refresh the welikesmall identity. We collaborated on creating a new logo and then applied it to the new website, office decor, &#38; business cards as well as other WLS gear. Read more about the rebrand on welikesmall's blog post.

		<description>The Objective:
To maintain a level of excitement just above wanting to kill ones self while stuck in a motel while stranded in Brunswick, Georgia, USA, Earth. This manifested itself in wanting to take a self portrait of myself, through the peep hole in my door with no ones help. No one but the sweet, sweet, god above me.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
The Inspiration:
While occupying my first Brooklyn apartment, I was fortunate enough to have a large group of people come visit. One night myself and Eric Rothman started taking pictures of our friends knocking on the door through the peep hole. That night’s fun hadn’t come to mind until tonight…when I took my own peephole shots out of pure boredom.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/testshot_2.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/testshot_2_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
The Problems:
How would I elevate my camera to be positioned right at the level of the peep hole to take a picture?

How would I take the picture if I needed to be standing on the other side of the camera, on the other side of the door, and in the hallway?
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
The Solutions:
Since I only had the things I brought with me to the motel, and the things in my motel room, my tools were limiting. I didn’t have a tripod with me or anything that would be the right height to set up against the door. and Even if I did, i still had to exit the door once the camera was set up against the peephole. I tried a number of test shots with the camera far away and zoomed in, but realized that the camera had to be in very close proximity to the plane of the door. This meant that I had to make my own ‘tripod.’

To elevate my camera to the proper height, I took the ironing board that was in my room and propped it against the door. This still wasn’t tall enough, and I would eventually need a flat surface to put the camera on. I took the hangers that were in my room and wedged them against the ironing board until I ended up with a relatively flat frame. (This took a bit of finagling.) I still needed more height to reach the peephole, so I put various objects on top of this frame until I gained the right height. (my toiletries bag, books, Contact Lenses, Camera Wires, and Hand Towels.)

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/frame_and_books.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/frame_and_books_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
(the final constructed frame &#38; objects on top)

I have a 10 second timer on my camera…which made the rest of this possible. Since I had to set my up camera in position before each shot, I needed a way to keep the camera in place once the door had both opened and closed while I exited. I used the towels to anchor all the various objects on top of the hangers using their own weight to keep them in place. (see photo below) This would ensure that all of the objects I had on top of my frame would stay in place once I opened the door and the entire ‘tripod’ was leaning backwards.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/towels_force-copy.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/towels_force-copy_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
The towels were held in place by the weight of the ironing board &#38; the books and such were held in place by their own weight.)

I placed the camera on top of this pile and used the neck strap in a similar fashion to the towels, and wedged it between the door at the books below holding it (somewhat) in place. To steady the camera after leaning back and forth I wrapped a cable behind the camera and wedged it between the door.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
It seemed I was ready for production at this point…
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
The Secondary Problems:
I had to open the door further than expected to get my body into the hallway
The opening and closing of the door still made the camera shift and become misaligned with the peephole.
My Belt loop kept getting stuck on the locking mechanism as I exited the door backwards:
People in the hallway were walking by seeing what I was doing, but understanding very little of what was going on…(There was no solution for this)
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
The Secondary Solutions:
My initial tests didn’t involve me opening the door very far to get out into the hallways. Thusly, the whole ‘tripod’ began to lean a lot further than its maximum stress point when I actually opened the door enough to fit my whole body through. To steady the entire ‘tripod’ I took a long computer cable and wove it through the hangers and over the top of the door so I could hold the ‘tripod’ in place as it tilted too far back when I exited the room. This steadying chord ended up helping with the alignment of the camera as it changed pitch and yaw.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/final_setup.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/final_setup_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; (The Final Setup)

As for my belt loop snagging… the only way to fix that problem was to be extremely crafty when exiting my room…oh and I put a shirt on to cover the back belt loop.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
The Test Shots:
Here are some of my test shots…they were all failures.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/testshot_1.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/testshot_1_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/testshot_3.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/testshot_3_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/testshot_4.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/testshot_4_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/testshot_35.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/testshot_35_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/titlecard.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/titlecard_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
The Final Picture:
After many attempts (not all of them pictured above) I ended up with a photo that I was happy with. This is the final image I took, unedited and uncropped. I apologize if it doesn’t live up to your expectations after reading all that information about it.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/self_portrait_09032009_small.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/62249/743835/self_portrait_09032009_small_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
(Self Portrait : Motel Hallway through Peephole. 2009.)
———————————————————————————————————————————-
And thats how I spent a pretty good amount of my night here in this motel. I hope you enjoyed the detailed explanation of the depth and breathe of my boredom here in Brunswick, GA.

		<description>pitchblackgulf.com was a personal project done in collaboration with my good friend Thom Allen. We made this site to raise awareness about how much oil was being spilled into the Gulf during the crisis. More importantly, this site asked visitors to donate to the National Wildlife Foundation to help relief efforts in the Gulf.
