OCAD University, Canada’s pre-eminent art and design University, had achieved degree-granting status and with that, a new name reflecting that status. They needed a new visual identity that would reflect the path of a 135-year-old institution moving quickly into the future.

The BMD team worked collaboratively with OCAD University staff in an intensive research and engagement phase. We involved students, alumni, faculty and staff by facilitating interviews, designing multiple workshops, disseminating questionnaires, leading classroom discussions, connecting through social media – with the goal of excavating the stories and spirit of OCAD U. The synthesis of this material led us to a robust set of design principles that would guide the design work. The visual identity needed to be a true reflection of what we heard and saw – an inclusive, vibrant and vital institution built on creativity, risk and innovation.

With this in mind, we asked ourselves, ‘can the visual identity reveal the extraordinary creative energy that lives at OCAD U?’ Inspired by the iconic and transformational Alsop-designed building, BMD created a base of black and white pixel ‘windows’– modular frames to hold actual student art and design work. It is through these ‘windows’ that we see the core of OCAD U that is often hidden from view – conceptually strong, diverse, and compelling. This is a dynamic and modular identity where every year, graduating student medal winners will be invited to contribute to the logo within the basic window framework, providing a set of logos for that year. As OCAD U grows and matures, a living library of identities will necessarily emerge, recording the ideas and aesthetics that have shaped our culture over time.

In order to introduce the identity, BMD collaborated with OCAD U staff on a 2-minute video for launch of the identity. The BMD team wrote, directed, conducted interviews, commissioned music and edited a short piece as an inspiring encapsulation of the reason and rationale for the identity.

Designing to change the world.
Whether we realize it or not, we live in a designed world. The question is: will this be a design for destruction or for a sustainable new world that we can safely hand down to our children and our children’s children?

Our idea of design goes beyond the way things look to the way things work. To paraphrase Marcel Duchamp, we set out to liberate design from “the tyranny of the eye.” Surveying the world we found hundreds of examples where visionaries were using design to effect positive change in the world. We called this pattern Massive Change.

We collected these stories into a best-selling book, a radio program and a touring museum exhibition that shattered attendance records in Vancouver, Toronto and Chicago. The relationships we developed with the world’s leading innovators form a community of purpose and expertise we regularly tap into as we pursue the paradigm-shifting principles of Massive Change in all we do.

It’s not about the world of design, but the design of the world.

BOOM is a dynamic new, master-planned community in the desert of Palm Springs. The BOOM development is not only an experiment in innovative design, BOOM also represents a new form of community, a kind of ‘urban village’ for the 21st century. Conceived for the LGBT community, BOOM also addresses the issues of health and aging through the lens of architecture. The project is the result of a collaboration between BOOM Communities, Inc., HWKN, BMD and a team of 10 internationally acclaimed architects, including Diller Scofidio + Renfro, LOT-EK, Arakawa & Gins, J Mayer H, Surface Design and Joel Sanders.

The developer, BOOM Communities, Inc., asked Bruce Mau Design to work on the naming, brand positioning & marketing strategy as well as the overall visual identity system including BOOM’s collateral and marketing materials. Additionally, BMD has developed www.boomforlife.com, as well as an overall digital strategy to link BOOM’s site to social media outlets, and an app-based module which allows potential buyers to help customize their own BOOM experience designing BOOM alongside the architects and developer.

The first phase of construction is set to begin in 2012. When construction is completed, BOOM will be a vibrant, co-created community.

Design thinking on a city-wide scale
Sudbury is a changing city—undergoing a dramatic transition from its mining town roots in the midst of the northern Ontario wilderness. It is also Bruce Mau’s home town, a place embedded in both his history and his ideas about the possibilities of the future.

We were invited by Imagine Sudbury, a group of citizens seeking a bold vision for the city, to help initiate a new plan of action. Through a series of workshops, interviews, and a public presentation, we outlined strategies for change that allow for a re-imagining of Sudbury by applying design thinking to the city as a whole.

This is an opportunity to bring spectacular focus and an audacious dimension to the change in city, to align the energies of the local visionaries and change-makers already working on great ideas, and to initiative the long-term, large-scale projects that will enable Sudbury to become a prototype city of the sustainable future.

To make these possibilities a reality, we are working with Imagine Sudbury to launch a Centre for Massive Change, which will act as the continuous engine for action and change. With the help of community, business, and education leaders in Sudbury and beyond, we are developing the model and launch plan for the Sudbury Centre for Massive Change.

Bruce Mau Design collaborated with MDC Partners – a partnership of world-class marketing communications companies – to produce THE SECRET OF SUCCESS, a book of quotations celebrating human creativity.

The project commemorated MDC Partners’ 25th anniversary, and honored its Chairman and CEO, Miles Nadal, whose passion for the subtle and profound truths to be found in the wisdom of the ages is unsurpassed.

BMD organized the book around nine overarching themes, including Creativity, Change, Destruction, Money, Life, and Success. We developed a distinct design approach for each section, drawing on common typographic conventions, from film script, to timeline, to family tree.

BMD joined the MDC Partners network in 2004. The partnership has allowed us to thrive and grow strategically by focusing on our core strengths, creativity and innovation.

Rethinking city life
The Mori Building Company commissioned BMD to help create marketing and communications strategies for the construction and launch phases of this 21st century city rethink of city life called Roppongi Hills, the largest private urban redevelopment project in Japan, a 2.5 billion, 24-acre holistic complex in the heart of Tokyo.

BMD co-authored, edited and designed a 350-page monograph of essays and studies on the city’s future. Through hundreds of images, the book explores the story of Tokyo, interweaving the traditional and contemporary Japanese identity.

The “Think Zone” is a richly programmed event gallery wherein visitors experience a centerpiece video installation, “Tokyo Countdown,” which, through the lens of ‘artificial nature’ and other contradictory elements, posits the past, present and future of Tokyo in a global context.

Inventing a dynamic identity
BMD was commissioned by NAi to develop an identity program that would offer designers maximum freedom for interpretation and experimentation. We created a standard yet flexible identity able to maintain consistency while communicating the diverse activities and ambitions of the NAi.

BMD developed the logo by projecting the image onto a range of different surfaces and materials. The projections, with their dynamic contours, achieved a sense of movement and transformation. The color strategy was inspired by Gerhard Richter’s painting, 1024 Farben, (1024 Colors, 1973). The result is a fully kinetic identity program that reflects the complexity of the NAi’s program.

Visualizing a global crisis
We designed and produced titles, credits and animated information graphics for The 11th Hour, a feature-length documentary film hosted by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The film documents the global ecological crisis and potential solutions through interviews
with 50 leading scientists, thinkers and leaders. We created dynamic on-screen motion graphics visualizing phenomena such as global warming, the impact of rising sea levels
and sustainable architectural design.

Bruce was also featured in the documentary as an expert on sustainable design.

Revolutionizing the book
Zone was the catalyst for the birth of the Bruce Mau Design studio, where we first developed narrative design tools we still use today (learning to design not just the look, but the story of every product), and began lasting relationships with cultural visionaries through our collaboration on a series of paradigm-shifting books.

Our first project with Zone Books was the groundbreaking volume Zone 1/2, a multi-perspective embodiment of the contemporary city. For the next two decades, BMD was involved in every broad vision and granular detail of over 100 books. The impact of our design on the actual content of the books was acknowledged by the publisher, who included us as an author on the spines of early volumes.

From a marketing standpoint, the publisher’s persona became such a distinctive identity that entire sections of Zone books would be grouped together in stores, focusing brand penetration into the consciousness of readers. Conceived as post-cinematic objects, the books as a thematic whole became powerful in their allure as instigators of a cultural movement.
