Sydnor Scholer and Sophia Lee designed the Freestanding Garden Screen for the garden patio at Mountainside Senior Living, an assisted living community in Crozet, VA. The form of the Screen emerged as a mediation between function, specific site context, cultural perception of salvaged materials, the unique characteristics of the available salvaged materials, and structure.

The larger goal of the Woodflows Exhibit was to map out where we could find large quantities of recoverable wood. This comprehensive model intends to present all of the systems involved in this industry - forest, manufacturing, use, recycling, and landfill. 

We discovered that the manufacturing plants are very efficient with their wood use. Most of their scraps are burned on site as a source of electricity. The largest unrecoverable source of wood was in fact that which comes out of "USE" and directly enters landfills. A small stream of wood is regularly recovered from construction demolition waste and reenters the manufacturing process either in particleboard plants or paper plants.

This sequence of images shows the Design Development, Shop Drawings, and Construction Administration of this model. Michael Levy was an integral part of the Design Development process, and many of the Tools for Conviviality students helped with the actual Construction Administration.</description>

ARCH 8010 &#124; Comprehensive Design Studio &#124; Phoebe Crisman &#124; Fall 2010

This studio designed a Science Lab for Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center (PEREC) run by George Mason University (GMU). An intriguing aspect of this project was to make a floating lab for more hands on experience.

This particular design aimed to engage the community by providing a "more public" open space in conjunction with a connected "more private" open space. The latter features a short viaduct conducting the building's grey water over the surface of a wall into a retention pond. Over time, this wall would accrue a dense layer of moss in this special microclimate.</description>

A Symposium at the UVa School of Architecture exploring alternatives to traditional design practice.

CONNECT + DESIGN + CONSTRUCT
With an emphasis on specialized skills such as drafting, modeling, and 3D visualization, the number of possible career paths from an architecture or landscape architecture degree can seem very limited. When examined more closely, the skills developed in our the UVa design programs are both broad and highly valuable in a wide range of design. This symposium presents the academic and professional paths of 11 UVa SoA alumni who have developed diverse and meaningful careers based on their architectural education. We hope the presentation will expand the notion of what it means to be an architect.

Our Keynote Speaker on Friday was Katie Swenson, Vice President of National Design Initiatives Enterprise Community Partners, Inc. This is the organization that awards the prestigious Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship.

I was 11 when I first received formal sketch training from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

I sketched these images during my undergraduate degree. I did many of them while travelling through Europe during the Versailles program from U of IL. Others I did for fun.</description>

ALAR 4020-8020 &#124; Lucia Phinney + Lionel Devlieger &#124; Studio Tools for Conviviality 

Traditional architecture education encourages a linear design process in which form designates material. In Studio Tools for Conviviality, we asked, what if material determined form? What kinds of material are generated that architects don't even know about, let alone use?

We focused on wood, a huge industry in Virginia. We visited 10 manufacturing plants (e.g. flooring, plywood, furniture) to seek out where in the process there may be large quantities of potentially usable scrap wood that may go directly to waste. We called these scraps our "monsters."  

Lionel Devlieger and his firm, Rotor, provided the inspiration for the research driving Studio Tools for Conviviality.</description>
