New Works from late 2011 onwards to 2012.

An interview from a Residency I did at Syracuse, NY - At the Art School in the Art School. Here I have created a publication to document 3 years if the ASintheAS.

I have done a series of work using discussions I've held about the Dark Matter of the artworld and criticality wiith this hyper-active world. I'm interested in Post-Fordism and the labour of art - focusing on collectivity. The dialogue generated is important. Part of this is to have a FEAST ((Funding Emerging Art with Sustainable Tactics), or SUNDAY SOUP. First created by inCUBATE. I put CAKE forward fora FEAST Fund in October 2011. We were in the top 10, but lost out to Cario. Well done Cario! We have since been fundraising in creative ways to generate enough money to do a proper FEAST.

As part of this, I'm interested in how we can get over the current crisis of capitalism, is there an alternative? And does this lay in the revolutionary surplus of artist practitioners or cities?

Project Biennale grew out of conversations, concerns, interests and inquiries developed through discussions, seminars and meetings established across three groups of postgraduate curating students from Chelsea College of Art, the University of Essex, and Sheffield Hallam University. The project began with no conception: there were no plans, no strategies and no aims for any specific outcome. The topic and title developed over five months of meetings and debate. However, through this process we understood that the demanding problem of the purpose and place of curatorial authorship was made exemplary when viewed through the lens of ‘biennale culture’.

A series of work on the gentrification, and the social impacts of architecture as spectacle. I soon realized that this was just a micro-version of an over-all interest in power structures and struggles surrounding us.

Utopian Protagonist was a fake architecture company that I set up as a satirical action that I was hoping would open up a platform of discussion on the displacement and social imagination surrounding the building boom of 2007-2009

This is a selection of collective work!
from CAaD (contemporary art as dialogue collective) to Cake and curatorial things in between.

Cake is very important to my practices autonomy so here's some info on CAKE:

www.cakeveryone.com

Established in 2009 above a bar called LOUNGE on West Street, Sheffield, UK - a small group of art-loving individuals got together and thought that this town (Sheffield) needed something exciting, something that really engaged with art, real ideas and everyone - just not a select few. It was here where CAKE ARTSPACE was born. It wasn't long until the group maneuvered the cityscape with an arrangement of events and exhibitions that involved people from all over Yorkshire and beyond. From the re-visioning of revolutionary architecture, to the exhilarating photography of parkour, to event nights of beats and pieces of music, slam poetry & performance and degree show fundraisers. No idea was too big or too small.

But things change, and people move. Recession came and CAKE ARTSPACE became just CAKE. We now have temporal spaces, and build bridges with other organizations to host events, exhibitions and dialogues. Now CAKE is run by an even smaller collective but is a fluid structure that is completely open to new collaborators and partners.

Mission

Our mission remains the same: CAKE is passionate about idea sharing, making, collaborating and experimenting with all forms of art. The idea is a simple one— that people who 'do things' can inspire the rest of us to go and 'do things'. So CAKE is for EVERYONE. We want to help you find your cause to fight, your company to start, your invention to invent, your book to write, your mountain to climb through the process of art.

What Do We Do?

CAKE makes exhibitions/events/slams/printedmatter/feasts/talks/collaborations/ects.

If you think CAKE sounds like your type of collective and you have lots of great ideas that you're excited about - we want to hear from YOU.

a partial intervention in chaotic spaces. Since most of the shanties are disappearing in the wake of the military "Shock Troops" followed by the arrival of demolition infrastructure: tractors and excavators I've decided that my intention is to recover these spaces from recent historic memory. If the Cingapura Project (the project to demolish shanty towns and convert the space into a vertical habitat for the residents) will cancel out part of this illegal territorialization, why not propose alternatives to the suppression? This also mirrors the situation with regeneration in the UK. my proposal for partial recycling, starting from the pre-existing reality, proposing a radical restructuring of the construct-ability, improving precarious conditions of habitability. they have a presumed existence, which are merely hypothetical abstractions of actual entities.

POWERnoid would be the perfect word to describe my life and art practice. A practice that is both all-world consuming but safely located within locality. My practice analyzes the relationship between what we perceive, and what we assume is plausible.

I re-distribute agency to the individual / collective and critique existing power structures, as such my work could be defined especially close to the idea of institutional critique. I trace the roots of these interests to my working class background, which gives me an affinity to society’s underdogs.

With a suspicious mind I have been concerned with the content of history and how it is circulated. I do this by comparing elements such as folk myths and political campaigning to grass-roots activism with the
cannon of art history. The work is often made in response to spatial and social conditions, whilst exploring environmental idealism. I mine history, it is here that I explore an ongoing love affair with movements organised by groups in order to empower individuals.

My work is very obviously inspired by the works of William Powhida, Deb Solkow, Charles Avery, Olivia Plender, ect. They're my prop.

On or about February 20, 2010, Jen Dalton & William Powhida transformed Winkleman Gallery, NYC into a think tank for approximately one month, complete with blackboards, work tables, beer*, coffee-makers* and a mini-fridge*. They invited a bunch of awesome artists, educators, curators, critics, art-lowers/haterz, ect ect and active participation in this project - including me!

Our goal was to find answers to such questions as:

*Is contemporary art a luxury commodity for the wealthy that limits the possibility of ownership, understanding, and access based on class, education and geography? If so, why exactly is that a problem?

*Why do people keep making art (or writing about it, or showing it, or caring about it) even when they don’t ever earn any money from it?

*When/if artists do manage to earn some money from their work, why does it sometimes make them feel queasy to sell their art to wealthy collectors?

* What are some possible viable alternatives or modifications to the current commercial art market system? What’s wrong with Capitalism? Isn’t it great!?

* Ect, Ect.

Find out more here

I contributed with the POWERLESS100 list, and Maps of the Art System to take-away for free whilst participating in some class discussions and activities such as Man Barlett's #24hr Boom & bust
