The diptychs of my book ‘Fragments’ form part of a visual diary. These images, taken sporadically, show scraps of memory, representing fragmented aspects of a life. The portraiture series, ‘Faces I have known’, echoes this personal motif by capturing the faces and characteristics of selected people from various areas of my life. These images are created in intimate atmospheres, far removed from the typical formality of studio portraits. Their worlds at moments overlap. The aim was to successfully combine stop-motion animation and live footage, focusing on innovative costume design and the creation of vibrant imagery. We drew contrast in atmosphere through changes in lighting to differentiate between the characters settings. Loosely inspired by religious medieval stone carvings, the panels are juxtaposed, creating gargoyles out of mismatched human forms, contorting and straining to interlock and maintain a link in the cycle. In mapping out this complex system, Milky Way creates its own independent structure, an Icon of its sum parts. By physically fusing together apparently disparate themes, this composite piece creates its own logic and narrative beyond what is represented by its individual panels. This photographic venture is the antithesis to the detached and at times cold nature of photography as a medium, in a quest to re-engage with the photo-viewer on new terms and to bring a visceral physicality often lacking in the politely framed photo print.
