		<description>A collaboration with Rachel Simpson and Adrien Guenette

stack blocks is an interactive toy for kids. by stacking the blocks vertically, different circuits can be formed, depending on which variations you choose (i.e sounds, lights, spinning tops).

The toy is designed to grow with the child. At an earlier age, the blocks serve as a simple building toy. When the child grows, they learn about the magic of electricity. Since the blocks are designed to be disassembled with common household tools, an older child could find joy in creating new circuits. The durable oak wood construction gives the toys a longer lifecycle.

		<description>In collaboration with Adrien Guenette

cici is an interactive toy for kids that pushes the boundaries of a child's imagination. The blocks' simple design allow for limitless possibilities for play. They can be used in 2d games such as puzzles and memory games or 3d by creating self balancing stacks, towers or dominoes.

The 'c' shaped blocks are a new take on classic building blocks. Each block has its own personality which lends their use to role playing. Imagine a child building a fort with cici blocks and also using them as characters. Made of laminated birch plywood, cici is durable and is meant to grow with the child.

		<description>Assembly is the collaboration between a haptic wearable device and a network of proximity. The goal of this research project was to create a user experience that promotes safety and comfort in the urban environment.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_wearable.jpg" width="670" height="402" width_o="750" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_wearable_o.jpg" data-mid="4508982"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

the wearable device uses symbolic language to communicate a need or receive a notification. For example different touch gestures imply different meanings. Doing up a button will send out passive signals of your location. stroking the discrete lining of the hem will send out a ‘friend call’. A combination of two hands swiping the outer arms implies you need serious help.

This user interaction utilizes embroidered conductive thread as touch sensors, and an integrated GPS module to send out location.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_gesture.jpg" width="670" height="402" width_o="750" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_gesture_o.jpg" data-mid="4508977"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_priority.png" width="670" height="349" width_o="750" height_o="391" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_priority_o.png" data-mid="4508981"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

the user receives feedback whenever someone nearby signals. a gentle vs. a strong pulse of vibration will denote the volume of presence of friends nearby.

This user interaction ultilizes embedded haptic motors to deliver pulse and vibration.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_haptic.jpg" width="670" height="402" width_o="750" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_haptic_o.jpg" data-mid="4508978"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

If the user receives a high priority notification, they can view literal information on their mobile. The website component then allows the user to modify their privacy and social settings.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_device.jpg" width="670" height="402" width_o="750" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_device_o.jpg" data-mid="4508976"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_web.jpg" width="670" height="402" width_o="750" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/939465/assembly_web_o.jpg" data-mid="4508983"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

the prototype garment utilized conductive threading as well as sewing snaps to allow for detachable electronic modules to be removable. For the user, this means the garment can then be washed naturally and replaced or interchanged with a different style. The flexible modules that contain the embedded technology could then be serviced, replaced, or upgraded with ease.

the process behind this ongoing project looks at areas of physical computing, haptic technologies, social networking, and proximity related networking. After a process of sketching and mapping, a participatory design workshop was held to aid in the development of the haptic/gestural language. The 10 participants involved were ask to imagine their current sweater as an iphone, and quickly 'bodystorm' different functions. After, everyone was asked to use markers on a spare shirt to co-create an imaginary wearable device. The one participant wearing the shirt assumed different positions and found gestures that were natural and quick.

		<description>trilume is a thin, flat-packed, wood centerpiece that houses a tea-light candle. Made with aircraft plywood from Finland, the form consists of three repeated ‘leaves’ that join together in the center and bend into shape. The light from the candle flickers and glows through the thin wood creating beautiful ambient lighting for intimate spaces such as restaurant tables.
Created for the Pan Pacific Hotel in downtown Vancouver and the Wood Coop on Granville Island as a gift that could be sent in the mail and assembled upon arrival.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse.jpg" width="600" height="289" width_o="600" height_o="289" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse_o.jpg" data-mid="2188552"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse_inside.jpg" width="600" height="289" width_o="600" height_o="289" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse_inside_o.jpg" data-mid="2188553"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Lighthouse Sustainable Building Center is developing the long term plan for a green roof which would offer a learning and sharing space as well as showcasing green building materials and techniques (specifically related to roofing options.) Helen Goodland, Executive Director and Amanda McCuaig, Office Manager, have offered our class the opportunity to propose a design for this space.

Based on feedback from Amanda, one of the primary goals of the green roof space is to act as a social space where visitors attending a seminar or function at Lighthouse could sit and take a break, with a cup of coffee, and chat with others or enjoy the view.

The goal is to design a social space and green roof for Lighthouse Sustainable Building Centre. This space will need to contain a coffee bar, sufficient seating for the people using the space, some protection from rain, as well as beautiful/educational components relating to green roofing.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse3.jpg" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse3_o.jpg" data-mid="2188888"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The images included in the visual ‘9-up’ are representational of our conversations with Amanda regarding the type of visual vocabulary that would ideally be in use throughout Lighthouse. Freshness is the driver for our design. Minimalism is an over arching theme which we strive to convey with our completed design of the space

People visiting lighthouse will be primarily interested in networking and learning. This group could include land/building owners, developers, design consultants, interior designers, builders and tradespeople. These community members will be people who spend time with their friends and family, and are interested in connecting with others in the community.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse4.jpg" width="600" height="601" width_o="600" height_o="601" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse4_o.jpg" data-mid="2188940"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Together with Amanda McCuaig from lighthouse, we expored ideas and priorities for the design. We integrated Codesign techniques like group sketching to understand the key values.

Seen below is a preliminary sketch of the terrace solution Amanda visualized, as a sitting space. Once finished, the roof will have a sloped surface, one of our key design challenges to address. Focal elements include: A teired terrace, planters, and a wood deck.

Amanda also felt strongly about a type of decorative green wall that might include an educational element or vertical planters. As well, lighting could be incorporated here. She responded to a sketch of a hanging ceramic pot by adding it to her images as well. This validated the idea.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse5.jpg" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse5_o.jpg" data-mid="2188985"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse6.jpg" width="600" height="257" width_o="600" height_o="257" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475797/lighthouse6_o.jpg" data-mid="2188994"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Through further development of the terrace idea, we produced tiled, modular platforms that could be arranged in clusters. Each could include LiveRoof planters and feature additional items such as glass urns with either water or lighting.

We developed the idea of the hanging pots further by creating a tesselated shape. These tesselations could house either descrete lighting, plants, or both.

		<description>A collaboration with Rachel Simpson and Rowan Liivamagi

Zoop Toy Cooperative is a project that addresses the issue of toy consumption. The project mandate called for a service design that would help minimize the toys thrown away and bought new from the store. Through co-creation with four 5 and 6 year olds from False Creek Elementary, an interface for trading and sharing toys was conceived. Zoop is a mobile cooperative that functions like a library in that the kids could trade a toys every week. Through this activity, community would be fostered, and kids would be taught of new ways of thinking about ownership.

Compartive Impacts GraphAs a class, environmental impact data was collected for six different childrens’ toys. Essentially, Okala Millipoints is a quantitative system of measuring how much impact a product has on our environment. This data would later be used for comparison with our term design projects. The goal was, of coarse, to design a system or toy that could have a much lower impact.
For communication sake, the impact of the toys shown below are relative to each other. As you can see, the Playmobile Kit has the most impact. (mainly because it has to travel a far way from the place it is manufactured)

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop1.jpg" width="600" height="696" width_o="600" height_o="696" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop1_o.jpg" data-mid="2175776"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The Co-Designers
Kai, Aleksander, Emma and Fabiana (left to right) were our co-designers at False Creek
Elementary. Our design team had five sessions with the youngsters. Each session consisted of activities that we designed to gain creative input for our project.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop2_2.jpg" width="600" height="216" width_o="600" height_o="216" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop2_2_o.jpg" data-mid="2175905"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Active Interviews
Aleksander, playing the “favorites” game. An action interview we devised in order to converse with the co-designers as a form of play. We soon realized that playful interaction was the only way to create a comfortable environment for dialogue.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop3.jpg" width="600" height="466" width_o="600" height_o="466" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop3_o.jpg" data-mid="2176004"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Cultural Probes
We assembled kits for each of the children to take home, which included a camera with a list of photographs to take. (Including “yourself”, “your toys”, and “where they are stored.”) Details of the children’s lives became immediately evident.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop4.jpg" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop4_o.jpg" data-mid="2176005"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Role Playing Session
In order to test how the children share and exchange toys, we designed a role playiing session. They responded by inventing their own system at the “store” we built.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop5.jpg" width="600" height="417" width_o="600" height_o="417" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop5_o.jpg" data-mid="2176016"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Bodystorming
While the children told us that they were not interested in toy exchange, they responded with excitement when presented with an engaging interface by which to trade the toys.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop6.jpg" width="600" height="451" width_o="600" height_o="451" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop6_o.jpg" data-mid="2176022"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Findings
During the 5 sessions we had with the kids, we found that they reacted differently with experience than discussion, that they play together rather than alone, and that they own many more toys than they play with each week.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop7.jpg" width="600" height="344" width_o="600" height_o="344" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop7_o.jpg" data-mid="2176032"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Preliminary Concepts
Based on findings from our co-design research, early design proposals included toy workshops, toy libraries and a toy co-op with a component online as a parallel toy life. These concepts were imagined through experience scenarios.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/brainstorm.jpg" width="600" height="521" width_o="600" height_o="521" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/brainstorm_o.jpg" data-mid="2189855"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Storyboards
The ideas we worked with previously with the toy library and toy co-op developed with a mobile component. The concept was developed further through a series of storyboards. The final iteration of the storyboards are shown here.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop8.jpg" width="600" height="464" width_o="600" height_o="464" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop8_o.jpg" data-mid="2176111"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop9.jpg" width="600" height="455" width_o="600" height_o="455" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop9_o.jpg" data-mid="2176112"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Form Development
As the concept of the Toy Co-op moved closer to a mobile vehicle we started developing form to follow the kind of experience we were trying to create for children.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop10.jpg" width="600" height="664" width_o="600" height_o="664" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop10_o.jpg" data-mid="2176143"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Experiential Vocabulary
In relation with creating a fun experience for kids, we developed a sort of visual identity for Zoop. The theme board takes cues from the adventure of going to the circus or the excitement of seeing the ice cream truck arrive in the neighborhood.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop11.jpg" width="600" height="304" width_o="600" height_o="304" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop11_o.jpg" data-mid="2176167"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

System Development
Shown here is a schematic of the components in the system. It is possible to see how they relate and connect to each other. On the right demonstrates the interactive toy-return chute which uses RFID technology to identify toys and to offer fun sensory feedback for kids.

Imagining details of where and when Zoop would arrive in thecontext of the False Creek community helped us develop a more concrete understanding of the mobile component of the system.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop12.jpg" width="600" height="560" width_o="600" height_o="560" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop12_o.jpg" data-mid="2176180"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop13.jpg" width="600" height="675" width_o="600" height_o="675" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/476761/zoop13_o.jpg" data-mid="2176186"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Visualization of Concept
Final renderings of the exterior space. Shown above are some possibilities of the expanding canopy in different suburban areas. The canopy itself creates an extended physical space for entering the mobile. As well, it encourages people to gather and interact. Practically, it also weatherproofs the space, which is especially important in Vancouver, BC.

		<description>A collaboration with Rachel Simpson, Mina Ghaani, and Joey Chung.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/cltexhibit1.jpg" width="600" height="347" width_o="600" height_o="347" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/cltexhibit1_o.jpg" data-mid="2188316"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The 160 degree home is a project that examines the essential aspects of living in small dwellings. The criteria of the project was to create a space within 160 square feet using a new building technique that utilizes Cross Laminated Timber. CLT is a prefab ready material that has excellent strenth. Our space was specifically targeted to students and recent immigrants.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_1.jpg" width="600" height="421" width_o="600" height_o="421" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_1_o.jpg" data-mid="2168516"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_2.jpg" width="600" height="421" width_o="600" height_o="421" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_2_o.jpg" data-mid="2168517"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_3.jpg" width="600" height="421" width_o="600" height_o="421" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_3_o.jpg" data-mid="2168519"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_4.jpg" width="600" height="421" width_o="600" height_o="421" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_4_o.jpg" data-mid="2168520"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_5.jpg" width="600" height="421" width_o="600" height_o="421" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_5_o.jpg" data-mid="2168522"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The sixty degrees refer to the habitat's floorplan. It tapers off, allowing for the units to be arranged, making it a viable housing unit for many different environmental contexts.

Part of the challenge of this project was using multi-function and compacting strategies to house all of the functions one needs to live comfortably. For example, the stairs double as storage and houses the toilet. The kitchen utilizes overhead and under-counter storage, sharing a wall with the bathroom to combine plumbing. And the 12' high units have a loft above, to create a private personal space.

Since our target users valued social interaction, we allowed for ambiguous/changable space that could be used as a meeting space or dinner gathering, for example.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_joey.jpg" width="600" height="347" width_o="600" height_o="347" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_joey_o.jpg" data-mid="2168543"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Our process consisted of collaborative critique sessions, field trips to wood manufacturers and building companies, co-design, survey input from fellow students, and vigourous model making both physical and digital.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_process_1.jpg" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_process_1_o.jpg" data-mid="2168719"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_process_2.jpg" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_process_2_o.jpg" data-mid="2168720"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_process_3.jpg" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_process_3_o.jpg" data-mid="2168721"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_process_4.jpg" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/39575/475647/160home_process_4_o.jpg" data-mid="2168722"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Along the way we would mock up our space using tape on the ground and cardboard walls so that we could experience our designed space. This worked to validate the ideas that were going onto paper and in SketchUp.

tiffin lunch kit is a refined dining experience on the go. The two bowls, cast in durable thin-walled ceramics, stack on top of each other and seal with a cork lid that doubles as a plate. Unpacking your lunch is like unpacking a table setting: the compact kit unfolds into a meal. The bowls allow you to separate your food for combinations like curries and rice, soup and bread, granola and fruit. The set can be used in the home or carried away to work and school; or wrapped up for a picnic.

Taking inspiration from Japanese bento boxes and indian tiffins, the bowls morph shape from a sturdy square bottom to a circular top. The form factor allows the bowls to fit together perfectly and intuitively. the components bind together securely with the use of a natural cloth elastic strap, held in place between the bottom bowls' feet.

Having designed a model of the bowls in a CAD software, the bowls were then outputted to a CNC router, where the shapes were subtracted out of foam, and used to make plaster moulds.
