The research identified parallels between Japan’s domestic dining culture, the localised densities of their metropolitan populations and the need for creating adaptable spaces within the UK’s own urban living environments. I concluded that something akin to a breakfast bar satisfied what people did in both countries, i.e. everyday dining, formal dining, dining with guests or work in a small home. In response to this complex functional requirement, I conceived of a multi-purpose, reconfigurable table that can be used on a daily basis to suit different functions, room layouts or user numbers. More configurations and broader use is made possible by combining two or more units.
