		<description>Every day I stare at myself intimately, taking part in the ritual of preparing myself to be presentable: I want to be Attractive, Beautiful, Ideal.  As I move closer to the mirror, I can see my imperfections glaring back at me; my nose is magnified, the veins under the thin skin of my eyelids seem heavy and dark, and the blemishes of my reality mock me as I sit in front of the mirror, embarking on the futile daily journey toward perfection. There’s a certain violence involved in the ritual of beautification – canons of beauty are forced upon me, definitions of “self-image” are fed to me intravenously by media, and every day I feel forced to construct the mask that seems to serve as a club card into my daily life called society.  

In this body of work I use myself as a subject to portray the mundane processes of the preparation and representation of the physical self.  I seek to express the grotesque reality of the details of a zoomed-in lens.  In some cases, the paint is polished and deliberate – contrived and calculated like the mask of perfection. In others I let it stay loose and messy – unintentional and revealing bits of naked raw canvas. The underpainting shines through the thinner layers of paint, much like the character of a person seeps through the facade of self image. I crop the subject tightly, impeding on her space to create a sense of objective infliction. The subject is a victim to an outside entity and as I look in on her as a viewer, I play a role in objectifying her yet feeling uncomfortable by the level of intimacy I’m invited in to experience.

		<description>I participated in an Artist Residency at the International School of Art.  This was a wonderful experience in the hilltops of Umbria; painting roughly 7 hours a day, 7 days a week, for three weeks straight.  During the Artist Residency I explored techniques I've never used before and really pushed myself into an unfamiliar territory with my own creativity.

		<description>We exist on the same planet, living in separate bodies and speaking in different languages. Although we share this world, each of us has within us our own gardens to be explored and discovered. Like plants, we are nurtured by the soil of our own experiences; we grow from a seed, our roots are nourished, we bloom and survive through the changing of the seasons. Our internal gardens are unique to us all, they are multifaceted – filled with opposing concepts that come together to form unity.
