My legs extend; I’m wearing pink heels. I’m crying for your attention but I don’t care to know whether or not you’re giving me it, which is why I’m buried in the snow. My legs extend upwards, touching the sky. My heels glow under the streetlight. My cheek is pressed up against the ice underground bearing the weight of all my body. I’m uncomfortable and in measurable pain and I can’t see anything. I can’t see you watching me from across the street, inside your car or through your bedroom window. I can’t hear you asking your friend what it is I am doing, wondering if I’m alright—if my legs will eventually go limp. Down here it’s quiet. I can’t hear anything except the sound of my own breathing and the sparkling ice and I won’t go limp because I am surrounded by the sound of being alive and I won’t go limp because I am blooming. My heels are the burst of bougainvillea flowers who cry out when they’re thirsty. Listen, I am grounded—undeniably so. I feel beautiful and wild and the blood rushing to my head feels warm. I’m in love and I want you to see that. I understand feeling better now because I’ve felt the extremities: walking down dark streets in a short dress against howling winds and men all hoping that I freeze over and disappear. But also the other extremes like standing with you on a moldy bathmat as we both drip dry hearing you say you’ll take care of me always and me truly believing you. Or like feeling my hips finally are beginning to move the way I want them to, nudging away the hesitancy with every swishy move, filling the space around me I had never used before. ____ I am planted upside down in the snow and I can’t see a thing and my heart is running wild and I’m in a lot of pain and I can’t get up.
