Venus of Google, 2013
From the Long Tail Multiplier Series/ Algorithm

27.2 x 14.9 x 8.0 cm
z-corp powder 3D Print

The Venus of Google was ‘found’ via a Google search-by-image, googling a photograph taken of an object I had been handed over in a game of exquisite corpse. The Google search returned visually similar results, one of these being an image of a woman modelling a body-wrap garment. I then used a similar algorithmic image-comparison technique to drive the automated design of a 3D printable object. The 'Hill-Climbing' algorithm starts with a plain box shape and tries thousands of random transformations and comparisons between the shape and the image, eventually mutating towards a form resembling the found image in both shape and colour.
I’m interested in this early era of artificial intelligence, computer vision and algorithmic artefacts, exemplifying the paradox of technology being both advanced and primitive at the same time. The Long Tail Multiplier series investigates the potential use of algorithms to create virtually infinite cultural artefacts, inspired by the stories of these algorithmic books and t-shirts.

Technical Credits
The Long Tail Multiplier system is based on a Hill Climbing Algorithm. The 3D Mesh render and distortion is done with Processing and the Hemesh library. The image comparison is managed with a Python script calling a command-line tool called ImageMagick. The object was printed on z-corp printer by Shapeways.

Digital Natives
2012
z-corp powder composite and z-corp tinted binder

Everyday items such as toys and a watering can are 3D scanned using a digital camera and subjected to algorithms that distort, abstract and taint them into new primordial vessel forms. In some cases only close inspection reveals traces inherited from their physical predecessors. These are then 3D printed on a z-corp printer.

Vessels are arguably the lowest common denominator for man-made objects across all cultures, these objects however have no storage function other than to embody the stored digital data that describes them.

Development credits:
The algorithms are executed within my own made software 3D interfaces; co_former for transforming shape and #ccc (colour co-creator) for generating colour. These output files ready for 3D printing in colour. I've coded these with Processing, and libraries Hemesh, ControlP5, and Toxiclibs.

The objects were first on display at the 3D Print Show, London, October 19-22.

sekuMoi Mecy
2012
z-corp powder composite and z-corp tinted binder

Ongoing exploration of derivatives of a 3D scan of Mickey Mouse, titled sekuMoi Mecy (a simple computer generated anagram). Each derivative demonstrates the progression of scanning and remixing processes I’m developing. The choice of character also raises issues of potential clashes with big copyright holders that could potentially choose to lobby for legislation against 3D scanning.

The Disney Corporation fascinates me for paradoxically pioneering remix culture by creating their own versions of public domain characters such as Snow White and Cinderella, and yet the company take a hostile approach against any attempts to copy their own creations. In 1976 Disney and others sued Sony for developing the betamax video tape recorder for being a device that could be used for copyright infringement. Mickey has been trademarked as well as copyrighted to ensure it will never have the freedoms of a public domain character, and the corporation have strongly lobbied and secured the Copyright Term Extension Act (known as the Mickey Mouse Protection Act). A Disney insider also revealed that the design of Mickey is constantly updated (such as the disappearance of the tail) to continually reset the copyright timer.

In the UK “mickey mouse” is slang for counterfeit or poor quality.

We Met Heads On

The animation titled 'We Met Heads On' is a cultural remix of the 3D scan hackathon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY organised by Makerbot. The public were invited to 3D-scan the public domain sculptures to then modify and 3d print derivatives. The files ended up on object-file sharing network Thingiverse, giving me access to the scans, in particular 'decimation study - met heads' by scotta3d which is a derivative from another thingiverse user tbuser.
To continue the lineage of derivatives, I have sampled the low-polygon heads from scotta3d into a Processing sketch that distorts the meshes in realtime in response to sound and outputs the glitched object files. The input song "Air And Lack Thereof" by James Blake is digitally expressed as forces that twist the mesh to the strength of the soundwave.

The video is a 'screenshot' of the real-time process, making it both a digital performance piece in itself and a documentation of the digital process in which a 3D object file is created. The output mesh file was then fed back into the thingiverse community whom have 3D printed derivatives of the file.

"Successful businesses will be those that optimize the mix of humans, robots, and algorithms...When it comes to automation, we may be in the elbow of an exponential curve." Technology Review

I am currently doing an ongoing extensive study on social bots. Social bots are software applications that run automated interactions over social networking sites. Some bots have the ability to generate their own text messages, and some utilise basic artificial intelligence to engage in conversation.
The interesting bots I find are added to the Botology tumblr.

My own bot developments are listed below, starting with the most recent:

@SonOfSponsbot

Son of Sponsbot was a watered down version of the more controversial Sponsbot that protested against the Olympic sponsorship regulations over trademarked words such as 'London', '2012', 'Gold', etc. It did this by retweeting sponsors and replacing any banned words with provocative replacements.

@sadB0T

SadB0T is a learning Bot, it will slowly expand its vocabulary based on tweets it finds containing :( (sad faces). It uses a Markov chain algorithm to generate new messages based upon what it has learnt.

@happyB0T

happyB0T is a learning Bot, it will slowly expand its vocabulary based on tweets it finds containing :) (happy faces). It uses a Markov chain algorithm to generate new messages based upon what it has learnt.

@NArtBot

NArtBot is the 'New Aesthetic' retweet bot service. It retweets any mention of the #newAesthetic but also generates its own opinions after being fed essays on NA. Any retweets of these opinions 'teach' NArtBot of its personal successes to use similarly in future. NArtBot also temporarily borrows the profile photo of the person it has just retweeted.

@ErtBot

ErtBot is a bot that searches for things being switched off and will reply to that person with a congratulatory response.

@ecojo1

Eco Jo is a virtual hippie, activist, eco campaigner that has learnt how to deliver thoughtful messages by scraping community forums.

tSet();
ABS plastic

A tea set is created by sampling and remixing existing objects using 3D scanning from photographs (via hypr3D.com) and a custom made Processing sketch that works as an interface to manipulate meshes and create ready-to-print files.

The process is an alternative partcipatory approach to product consumption that exploits emerging technologies to make it possible for people to copy, modify and fabricate objects to their own taste.

A project developed during the Generator.x 3.0 workshop organised by Marius Watz at iMal.

Ink on Paper

Royal College of Art final show

"From the point where our ancestors started making tools, people have been unable to survive without the things they make; in this sense, it is making things that makes us human."

— Neil MacGregor. A history of the World in 100 Objects. p.13

As a child I was most excited by the ink splatter found all over my father's commercial art studio, more so than the high quality handmade prints they were working on. Advancements in digital printing and image processing made the hand-made practice redundant, and the studio like many others closed or adapted. I felt an empty space develop; machines substituted functionality and intentionality, but were never programmed for more irrational needs such as charming studio visitors with ink splatter. I developed a swarm of machines to do exactly and only that, hoping to create a talking point about our needs, skills, technology and redundancy.

Sound Tag, Albert Bridge.

Sound tagging is a new activity for documenting the sounds of our city. Most large buildings have distinct auditory signatures as a result of vibrations generated by traffic, underground, and wind that resonate through the solid structures. In simpler terms: buildings have voices.

One second of the auditory signature of Albert Bridge was recorded with contact mics, graphed, laser-cut and attached to the underside of the bridge.

Analogue Website II

Despite being the fastest growing space in the world, the internet is still an abstract, intangible space. This website is a physical space that is accessed via the internet by means of a webcam on a train track, allowing it to navigate to different handmade pages. After many web crashes (train derailments) the project is continually being revised and upgraded.

I'm now seeking contributors to develop Analogue Website III, this time being a space with a reliable infrastructure and space-for-rent that would invite anyone to create content for.
