		<description>Three A4 landscape artworks which formed the first project for my Masters Degree. 

The designs  grew from my interest in the theories of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung on the phenomenon he called Synchronicity.  Jung claimed that the Synchronised Event is where two or more significant, connected and meaningful experiences occur within a short space of time. He believed that Synchronicity moves human beings towards greater consciousness. 

It was my intention for the artworks to disrupt the senses, thereby disrupting reality in mimicking the concept of the synchronised event. My aim also was for them to possess a magical, spiritual atmosphere along with a scientific, mechanical quality. The use of light and abstracted geometric forms were used in an attempt to capture the strange, overwhelming sense of clarity often experienced in the moment when synchronicity occurs.   The accompanying text being the words of the physicist Arthur M. Young.

		<description>Four B5 portrait designs in answer to a brief for independent record label 
and publishers, 'First Fold Records'. The illustrations are a response to the words Nostalgia, Wanderlust and Melancholy and appeared in First Folds second arts journal Premier Pli.

A voice, a tune, a touch, a scent, a colour can rekindle with some ferocity 
a meaningful moment in time. Nostalgia often fills us with a warmth and a longing for past experiences personal and precious to us. Our perceptions 
of life shape our memories and ultimately become part of our physical 
make up on a molecular level. We become what we have lived.

Found text, imagery and family photographs became the natural vehicle 
for my own expression of this idea. For me the resulting images are slightly dark and sinister, possessing a deep well of melancholly associated with 
the loss of those I have loved. However they are also intended to evoke in 
the onlooker, a sense of hope and wonderment at the complete courage 
required in living a life to its fullest and its best.

These 4 images also formed part of a lens based exhibition in the Espacio gallery, London. This was organised by the photographic collective  'Uncertain States' .

		<description>Four A4 portrait artworks; influenced by the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud on the subject of dreams, focusing on their links to the subconscious mind and the spiritual self.

Freud claimed that dreams have an alternative motive and are formed through highly intellectual activity. He believed that dreams obey the laws of visual rather than verbal representation and that the dreamer regresses into a primitive pictorial representation of their feelings through the dream.

It is incredible to think  that our dreams reveal to us important messages from the subconscious mind, in order to aid our spiritual growth. I have attempted then to capture the strange inner world of one particular re occurring dream I regularly experience, in which a great battle of wills ensues. Muted tones capture a sense of foreboding and harsh geometry is used to communicate the power and drama of its personal meaning. 

These artworks stand alone or form part of a hand made artist’s book containing haiku poetry.

		<description>A response to a brief structured around the stimuli of 'nodes', for a collaborative graphical art exhibition in the Sans Space gallery, Stafford.

A node can be described as a joint or a point of growth where converging elements meet. A connection of separate entities, whereby something organic, mathematical or astronomical emerges from or intersects.

If we take this theoretical concept of a node and apply it to the origins of life on earth, we could view it as the coming together of inanimate matter and intelligent design. The connection of converging elements, culminating in the creation of the first organic molecules, the original building blocks of life born of the primeval soup. 

With this concept in mind, I began taking photographs, enlarging and reducing them, by means of a photocopier, cutting them up and then piecing them back together by hand. The chemical and life giver H20, the vaguely organic looking sphere (the familiar, reassuring shape of sol) and the celestial bodies from which ultimately we are all derived.

My intention was for the resulting artwork to possess an atmosphere of foreboding, thus portraying the enormity of the implications surrounding the spontaneous generation of life, seemingly unbidden from nothing. I wanted the images to have a sequence which would represent something growing, developing, taking over. 		<description>The overall rationale for the Configuration's 1 - 5 was to illustrate the journey man takes in reaching spiritual union with his or her god self. 

Proportion, mathematics and sacred geometry became a natural conduit in conveying the mystical; these being present at the core of all form and creation. As I moved through the execution of the configurations, light, colour and abstraction also became the most natural way in conveying the connection with our inner selves. The accompanying text being the words of a Sufi master. 

Although pale colours are often associated with the divine, I felt the need to communicate the brutality experienced on our journey into self. The more difficult the path, the greater the opportunity for self knowledge, hence the heat in the colour.

Abstracting manmade modernist architectural facades from their natural settings gave birth to strange monoliths. My connection with them became both reassuring and unsettling, reminding me of an otherness present within my life at all times. For me, their straight lines and space allow for a sense of peace and contemplation and speak of the underlying order fundamental to our existence.

This project was to become my final Masters project at university and featured in the quarterly broadsheet produced by the photographic collective Uncertain States.

		<description>A teacher of graphic design in both further and higher education. Following a Masters Degree in Art, Cultural Media and Photography, I am in the process of creating graphic illustrations via the medium of photomontage.

The youth culture in which I partook during the 80's had a large impact upon me becoming a graphic designer. A lifestyle built around watching live bands lead me to connections within the music industry and for the best part of a decade I worked as a freelance graphic designer, my main commissions being for Midlands band The Wonder Stuff and Polydor Records. The medium I used to produce the designs was photomontage created by hand, with final artwork laid out using the traditional 4 colour printing process. No Macs. 
 
Prior to this I learnt my craft at a drawing board as a draftsperson, correcting ordinance survey maps for surveyors and engineers. The traditional hands on approach to my training stood me in good stead when studying graphics at university. 

It is this craft based approach that I return to now, with photomontage remaining  my first choice of media. Working with both my own photography and found imagery, I experiment with geometry, texture, scale and light in an attempt to disrupt the senses. I take much inspiration from the Futurist, Modernist and Dadaist movements in art and design. My intention being to create meaningful, visually arresting graphic illustration work, whereby the onlooker completes the the meaning of the artwork themselves.
