Organic Milk Bottle Design - 48 Hour Repackaging Project

Collaborative project with Kumi Yoshizuma, Trang Dang

Organic Milk was a 48 hour repackaging competition on the dates 2/25/11-2/27/11. There were four category we could have chose: Beer cases/bottle, light bulbs, honey, and milk. We picked milk and design everything from the bottle to a system to recycle the bottle with.

Untitled from Paul Gonzalez on Vimeo.

Why we picked Milk

We choose milk to the fact that we love drinking it. Our redesign of the milk bottle was going for these main topics: Keeping milk fresh and at it’s best conditions, making it reusable, and also recyclable. We chose recycled glass for it’s extraordinary functions. Glass bottles make milk stay fresher, taste better, and it doesn’t hold any odors. Milk also stays colder and doesn’t spoil at fast.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/04.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="658" width_o="2048" height_o="2011" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/04_o.jpg" align="left" />
There are five main features to our redesign of the glass milk bottle: 100% recyclable aluminum cap which is used to cap the milk and also have a long life of reuse for future milk bottles, vintage tops coming from vintage milk cans, new holding area where it’s based off the natural curve of the hand, pH indicator to see if the milk is still good, and it’s extruding body from dairy farm silos.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/00.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/00_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/11.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="482" width_o="2048" height_o="1475" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/11_o.jpg" align="left" />
We first started at the top with the 100% recyclable aluminum cap in which we chose metal for it’s long life time and also it’s a solid seal on the milk bottle in which you can keep reusing over and over again.

We wanted to use vintage milk can tops for it’s famous wide opening, so that you can pour or drink easily.

The design for the new holding area is very natural to the curves of the hand. We used two convex circles on the side of the bottle so even the bottle is wet you will still have a strong nonslip grip on the milk bottle.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/01.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="658" width_o="2048" height_o="2011" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/01_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/02.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="658" width_o="2048" height_o="2011" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/02_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/03.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="658" width_o="2048" height_o="2011" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/03_o.jpg" align="left" />

The pH Indicator is a great new addiction to the milk bottle. It indicates when the lactic acid reaches the pH level of 4.3 to 4.5 in which at this level spoils the milk. It is designed with in the letter “MILK” in the front of the bottle. If the letters “MILK” are transparent then your good to drink but if it’s dark grey then the milk has gone bad.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/10.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="658" width_o="2048" height_o="2011" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/10_o.jpg" align="left" />

The elongated body comes from the large dairy silos in which they hold large quality of milk or liquids. The extruded body also has a modern design feel to it, in which is refreshing and exceptional to it’s look and feel of the bottle.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/05.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="658" width_o="2048" height_o="2011" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/05_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/06.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="658" width_o="2048" height_o="2011" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/06_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/07.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="658" width_o="2048" height_o="2011" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1149406/07_o.jpg" align="left" />

Making the bottles recyclable and functional was a big part of our design. When finish with the milk bottle people can either throw the bottle away or can either recycle it, take it back to the store and buy more milk for a cheaper price for bringing the bottle back. Even those the first time you buy the bottle; it will be more expensive over time it will be cheaper if you keeping it back to the store. The reuse of the bottle may have many functions but main storage, you can put olive oil, vinegar, jam, i can become a center piece for the table with flowers in side of it, and even afterward you can take it back to the store and get more milk at a great price.

Data Rules All project is about information and how to understand and organize information. We started off by just drawing graphs on paper to show our ideas. Then 6 weeks into the project we got pick two of the six graphs we wanted to put into digital format.

Special Thanks to Malika Suleymanova for modeling and helping me out though out the project.

Paper city project was about communicating a concept though a 3-D format. I documented the process throughout the project in which you will see here.

El Proceso de El Carnaval de Ponce

Listening within me
I started off my paper city concept with three major ideas: Typography, Pop Art and the Puerto Rican Culture. After 3 weeks of researching and mind mapping ideas I chose my own culture.
After choosing my culture i spend another week really researching everything about and collecting photos. This gave me a great base to start off in. I chose to represent the Puerto Rican Culture by one of the many Carnivals that happens there every year: Carnival de Ponce which celebrates the first Governor of Puerto Rico Juan Ponce de León. During the Carnival de Ponce one of the old traditions is to wear “vejigantes” which are colorful mask traditionally represent the devil or, simply, evil. Each mask has it’s own history and character. I chose each mask to represents a different culture which had influenced Puerto Rican culture to shape it into what it is today: colorful, diverse, passionate and rich in flavors. The paper city itself is a mask that you can wear, and at the same time it consists of several other masks. The cultures that the masks represent include: Africa, Spain, Taino, Caribbean, USA, South America.So all together they make the culture a whole.

Process
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1148607/5.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1148607/5_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1148607/4.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1148607/4_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1148607/3.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="250" width_o="2048" height_o="766" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1148607/3_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1148607/6.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="250" width_o="2048" height_o="767" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80686/1148607/6_o.jpg" align="left" />

Simplicity
I tried to make all the postcards simple and also very graphic at the same time. Some are stright to the point and some are a combination of photos and graphic elements to represent a curtain culture.

Facing it All
I decited to brand the Carnaval de Ponce so there will be a logo for the Carnaval along with posters and handouts for my presentation. I wanted to make the branding more of a historal event with also a hint of Carnaval and Puerto Rico in it.

The Understanding of Typographic Elements was a compendium of my typographic studies during the sophomore year of Ringling College. This book shows the basic understanding of typography in it’s anatomy, symbol, layout, and type and image.

Throughout the course we were taught to understand that contrast rules the day. We had to chose a modern chair in which we used as an image to contrast the letterforms. We went on a typographic journey in which we designed with in spreads where we were tested to see how far we can go only using type+image using size, space, and angles, adding more elements as the assignment went on challenged us to go even further as a designer with typography.
