A self-authored publication I done earlier this year on the idiosyncrasies of London life from the perspective of an outsider. An immensely enjoyable experience to create, the piece takes the form of an 8 page newspaper (in reference to the 'beloved' free newspapers of the London streets).

A limited amount of the printed newspapers, produced by The Newspaper Club are available by emailing hello@paulthedesigner.ie.

Toon Brothers are a new Irish animation production company. They specialise in creating cartoon characters and storylines that deal with environmental, social and other issues through comedy action adventures.

I was briefed to create a new identity, website and short title sequence for their upcoming cartoons.

‘think b4’ is a cross-medium campaign that aims to tackle the rising problem of cyber bullying. Unlike other campaigns that address cyber bullying, ‘think b4’ does not preach to young people on morals from an adult voice. Instead, it is designed to look and feel like it was designed by young people, for young people. Teenagers are far more likely to discuss issues with another young person than with an adult.

In addition to helping victims of cyber bullying, ‘think b4’ aims to change attitudes and behaviours amongst potential bullies. This can be achieved by making bullying something that is seen as ‘undesirable’ behaviour amongst their peers

1: Viral campaign video

2: Website and Facebook app
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/Homepage.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="549" width_o="640" height_o="549" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/Homepage_o.jpg" align="left" />
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/Inside-page-chat.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="613" width_o="640" height_o="613" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/Inside-page-chat_o.jpg" align="left" />
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/signup.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="550" width_o="640" height_o="550" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/signup_o.jpg" align="left" />
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/Report-on-Facebook.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="501" width_o="640" height_o="501" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/Report-on-Facebook_o.jpg" align="left" />

3: Offline promotional material
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/offline2.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="437" width_o="640" height_o="437" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/offline2_o.jpg" align="left" />

CASE STUDY
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/Boards-8.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="308" width_o="640" height_o="308" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/859893/Boards-8_o.jpg" align="left" />

From an extensive research process, including interviews with parents, teachers, victims and case studies, the following emerged as the main issues in relation to cyber-bullying:
1. Young people in schools are fearful of reporting bullying to teachers/parents because often the consequences are worse if they do. An outlet for easier and anonymous reporting of incidents is needed.

2. Because of technology, young people can now bully online without any apparent consequence. For example: by posting hurtful comments, SMS messages or spreading humiliating videos (for example the ‘happy-slapping fad). A change of attitude, behaviour and responsibility taking is needed.

The ‘think b4’ campaign consists of three parts to tackle these issues:
1. An offline class mentoring system- Each class in participating schools is assigned an older student who acts as a ‘class mentor’. They are available both on and offline to whom stuents can anonymously report issues. They also act as a visual deterrent to bullies.

2. A website where teens can report issues anonymously and chat to their assigned class mentor. A Facebook app also allows young people to report undesirable communication directly from their social media.

3. A viral campaign that aims to change attitudes towards cyber bullying. This runs alongside the website and offline program. The aim of this is to talk to teens in their own ‘language’ and to make cyber bullying behaviour ‘uncool’. Unlike many existing videos that ‘preach’ to teens from an adult voice, the ‘think b4’ video aims to be humourous and ‘cool’, while still communicating the core message.

I recently designed and illustrated the album artwork , single artwork and promotional material for the colourful electro-rock band, Hogan. The brief was to design something energetic and fun, so in consultation with the band, we decided to design the sleeve in the style of a retro comic book.

The album disk and sleeve was printed on a Digipack with a lovely fluorescent green Pantone spot colour.

‘Shh’ is a cross-medium digital ‘treasure hunt’ which allows the user to experience the secret stories of the old Dublin. Using a combination of sound, video installation and interactivity via an iPhone app and a website, the user will ‘discover’ the secrets of the old city is a unique way.

'Shh' won the 'New Media' category in the 2010 IDI Graduate Awards.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/logo-small.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="313" width_o="640" height_o="313" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/logo-small_o.jpg" align="left" />

There are 3 parts to 'Shh':

1: iPhone/smartphone application

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/app-small.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="277" width_o="640" height_o="277" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/app-small_o.jpg" align="left" />
The starting point of ‘Shh’ is the smart phone application which comes pre-loaded with a range of tours of secret old Dublin. The user plugs in their headphones and the app, using GPS technology, guides the user around the city to the next part of the tour, the street installations.

2: Street installations (hotspots)

Scattered throughout the city, the street installations are the ‘face’ of the experience. Audio from the app guides the user to these hotspots where they will see a large, life-sized projection of a short film of a ‘secret’ of old Dublin accompanied with a narrative on their headphones. The installations are also available to view on the app and website; however, the user must have physically visited the hotspot locations to unlock and view each respective video. The more you visit the city the more content you will have to access back home and experiencing old Dublin virtually.

3: Website

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/website-pg1.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="609" width_o="1275" height_o="1215" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/website-pg1_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/website-and-app2.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="609" width_o="1275" height_o="1215" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/website-and-app2_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/website-pg3.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="609" width_o="1275" height_o="1215" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/website-pg3_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/website-pg4.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="609" width_o="1275" height_o="1215" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/36649/447882/website-pg4_o.jpg" align="left" />

After the tour is over, the user can visit the website for a range of post-tour interactions:
- View and print a map of your journey through the old city.
- View videos of the content you have unlocked (ie- the places you have visited).
- Discuss your trip, share stories and interact with others who have taken the tour.
- Add your own secrets which can be then vetted by staff for possible inclusion on future tours.

CASE STUDY
What do 141 graduating students across 6 different creative courses have in common? How can a single identity and catalogue represent the diversity of the DIT School of Art, Design and Printing graduating class of 2010?

The concept
The common denominator? The creative process. The concept behind this years design was to use information graphics to express ‘the science’ of the students’ creative processes. We interviewed all 147 students from the school about their personal creative process. The results from the survey were compiled and the data was used to build information graphics on creativity. These graphics were used to divide the catalogue for the sections on each respective course.

The project spanned three months and involved designing all the graphics and branding for the show, posters, website, signage and a 176 page catalogue compiled with the graduating students’ work.

The catalogue cover and invitations were screen printed by hand on grey-board using orange fluorescent ink, to represent the materiality of the creative process.
