To visually represent my culture and family, I created three life-size metal masks and three 10 foot tall corresponding graphic posters that show the evolution of Chinese visual aesthetic, using my grandmother, my mother, and myself as three pinpoints in time. Each mask and poster's style, color, construction, and animal is a reflection of each person's time period and zodiac sign. The Chinese calligraphy featured on the posters are sayings written in my grandmother's hand about each zodiac's characteristics. The reason why I chose to create masks was to convey the idea that I am a result of my grandmother and mother. So even though their masks are reflections of them as individuals, all the masks are made to specifically fit my face. Ram - My grandmother, born in 1919. The saying reads, "The Ram's heart is very kind, but the skin is like a Tiger, tough and needed by everyone." The mask is constructed of copper that was then submerged in an acid bath, giving it a corroded and patina finish. This represents the more rural lifestyle of earlier China, and the closed mouth is a statement about the insignificance of females at the time. Dragon - My mother, born in 1952. The saying reads, "Whatever the Dragon flies over will prosper." The mask is constructed of nickel silver that I sandblasted to create a softer finish. This mask is more bold than the Ram in all aspects, just as my mother is in comparison to my grandmother. It also symbolizes the aggressive transition at the time, as Communism took hold of China and women started to have voices. Rat - Me, born in 1984. The saying reads, "When the Rat encounters anything, it already knows what to do with it." The mask is constructed of copper that was sandblasted and then bathed in a liver of sulfur patina, creating its matte black finish. The most modern in style of the three, the large eyes represent curiosity and independence, and the rat symbolizes monetary wealth, which is a reflection of China's booming economic growth. had the great pleasure of meeting and working with Tad Hills, the author of the New York Times Bestselling children's book How Rocket Learned to Read, a story about Rocket the dog who learns to read with the patient help of a little bird. Other than just converting the story from print to digital format, we wanted to create a fun and interactive iPad app that actually helps kids learn to read, just like Rocket. Playful animations and interactive games implement the full spectrum of the iPad's capabilities, such as tapping Rocket to make him jump and wag his tale, blowing on the screen to make leaves fall off a tree, tilting the iPad to make the bird move, and using a finger to write words in snow. It was important that they be portrayed as a legitimate chopper brand, while promoting their new television series as a secondary element. In exchange for a new site, we received our very own, customized Domani Studios chopper and were featured in the first episode of the new series! I've included some behind-the-scenes photos of the bike unveiling, along with a concept design, in the slideshows below. St. Regis Hotel's and Polo's history together goes back to the early 1900's. Coordinated with illustrator COMPANY Domani Studios Allstate and the U.S. Olympic committee teamed up to create this online competition for children to support Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympics. An Olympic-themed park is being constructed in Chicago's Jesse Owens Park, and through this competition children have the opportunity to influence the actual park's design. The way it works is kids build their playground by selecting a playground shape, selecting and customizing individual playground pieces, selecting a color theme, naming it, and finally submitting it. The playground with the highest votes (submitted by other kids) wins and is used to help design the park. This was one of those rare projects where no pre-existing brand guidelines existed, so we had a lot of fun creating this site.
