Picture the child who can’t afford a childhood, because he is too busy fighting to stay warm, because she is too busy scrounging for food. Picture the young person whose readiest chance at security is in a gang, with a pimp, or lost in constant nomadic wandering. Picture the influence Home has on the shape of our developmental lives. For the young person who has been thrown away, locked out, abandoned, Home represents far more than security and comfort. Home represents the chance to learn to rest and dream, to laugh and explore, to spend more energy on becoming fully human than on staying barely alive. To have a home, for them, means the opportunity to receive, learn, and practice life in the power and goodness of neighborly community. So if having a home is so good and powerful, what about giving a home? What does it mean to a city proud of its neighborhoods and communities, if the streets are full of kids without a place to rest or grow? To those among us whose childhoods could have used more Home, such questions may sound too loaded or moralizing. But to those who know the seriousness of a child at play, such questions will ring as a familiar call to the ageless adventure of dreaming better dreams.
