		<description>The sensible cook

http://foodsenses.tumblr.com/

The Sensible Cook is a service that provides two different platforms for the users to explore and experiment in cooking.
One platform is a physical cookbook, it is designed to boost users' confidence in cooking and help them trust their own senses rather than follow fixed instructions. There are three different sections in the book: introduction, book's recipes and user style recipes which provides space for the users to save their own experiments. The book also incorporates a set of smell samples which inspires and reminds of users how important and effective smell can be while selecting ingredients for cooking. The book's recipe pages are printed on glossy paper whereas the save-your-recipe pages are notebook papers for a natural writing experience. The website provides the chance to share the recipes with the community, get inspired by others and purchase new cookbooks. The Sensible Cook comes in a gift box with a selection of spices, a quick guide, a notes sheet and a shopping bag.

ABSTRACT
Cooking has become a popular hobby for many people. For beginners, as well as for more advanced hobbyists. The world wide web is a popular resource for recipes. Because it provides the chance to reiterate a recipe and find the one that matches each individuals flavor palate.
However, there is still no guarantee what you see on the screen would be pleasurable when cooked. The other issue is that people are concerned about using their laptop in the kitchen. It is simply not the right environment for laptop.
Information in paper recipes can be ambiguous and sometimes prior experience is needed to know what exactly to do. The final result depends on a lot of parameters and can fail every time, if one is not careful. This multiplicity of things to consider can be too demanding and stressful for beginners, thus discourages them.

The purpose of the research is to look into different sensory decisions taken in consideration with food choices. When talking about multi-sensory experiences, it is necessary to investigate and understand the human senses to know how people perceive the world.

INSPIRATION AND METHODS
Due to the nature of cooking a pragmatic approach was best suitable in the research and exploration process. To discover the power and understand the role of different senses in the process of cooking, it was necessary to experiment and explore how important and critical each sense is.
Questionnaires, cooking diaries, interviews, observations, cooking workshops and sensory experiments were methods used along the process. Each new experiment was based on the findings from previous workshops to build a solid foundation.

As for inspiration, there is much fun in flipping through a cookbook and stumbling on recipes where the author pairs ingredients in ways that have not occurred to you. There is a certain sensual pleasure when pursuing through a cookbook, reading about the culture and
history of a certain cuisine, seeing pictures of the ingredients and discovering the recipes and flavors from around the world.

The research lead to a focus on smell and vision as primary senses to help users explore and create their own recipes.

This project puts forward a solution for a new and innovative remote meeting device which promotes a personal connection and shared experience, and has been designed to encourage remote tutoring activities.
I was teamed up with 4 other classmates to build this connection device.
STATEMENT OF INTENT
Our aim is to provide a system which will achieve the following:
• Increase contact between the tutor and students.
• Improve the relationship between the tutor and students.
• Improve the quality of teaching and learning.
To do this, the focus of the project was to create a shared experience with a feeling of personal contact.

<description>This project was team work, focused on the user behavior towards the public coffee machine, trying to find a better interactive solution. To make the process easier and more clear we created different phase to follow.
Phase 1: Getting to know the coffee machine.
Phase 2: User observations &#38; quotes, analyzing user behaviors.
Phase 3: Problem Identification and brainstorming.
Phase 4: Flow chart.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/machine.jpg" width="477" height="590" width_o="477" height_o="590" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/machine_o.jpg" data-mid="6674392"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/user.jpg" width="512" height="383" width_o="512" height_o="383" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/user_o.jpg" data-mid="6674370"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/flowchart.jpg" width="670" height="785" width_o="776" height_o="910" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/flowchart_o.jpg" data-mid="6674419"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Phase 5: Ideation.
Phase 6: Lo-Fi testing.
Phase 7: Assessment &#38; re-design.
Phase 8: Finalizing and Hi-Fi testing.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/p_icafe4.jpg" width="670" height="502" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/p_icafe4_o.jpg" data-mid="6601412"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/p_icafe3.jpg" width="670" height="458" width_o="800" height_o="547" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/p_icafe3_o.jpg" data-mid="6601410"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/IMG_0825.jpg" width="670" height="502" width_o="1600" height_o="1200" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/IMG_0825_o.jpg" data-mid="6601362"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/IMG_0883.jpg" width="670" height="502" width_o="1600" height_o="1200" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/IMG_0883_o.jpg" data-mid="6601367"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/IMG_0893.jpg" width="670" height="522" width_o="2048" height_o="1597" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/IMG_0893_o.jpg" data-mid="6601376"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/3.jpg" width="566" height="385" width_o="566" height_o="385" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/3_o.jpg" data-mid="6602074"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/1.jpg" width="670" height="670" width_o="925" height_o="926" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1322981/1_o.jpg" data-mid="6602076"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

By combining the good points of the first two ideas after the Lo-Fi test, the scenario is:
1. Approaching the machine, you can see all the drinks options but they’re off except the hot water, to indicate that they are not activate until you insert your key
2.By inserting the key the drinks buttons light up and you can choose
3.After choosing the right drink comes the next step which is the different options of extras.
since there are two type of recognition (pictures or text) by using small icons and text we tried to help the users to identify what do they want to add.
4.There is a back button which gives the users the opportunity go back and change their selection.
5.Having the “Go” button in green indicates that the user is done with the order is ready to go.
6.The green flashing light around the key hole alerts the user not to forget the key.</description>

<description>This project was sponsored by Tellart, an the week was dedicated to built concept prototypes by hacking mobiles, part of the experience prototyping course. We spent the first few days getting to know NADA Mobile software that would help us upload AS3 codes on the mobile devices which in this case where iPods and iPhones.
Later during the week me and Lauren Javor as a team hacked a remote control car and hooked it up to an Arduino. By building an iPhone interface in AS3 we could sent accelerometer values through NADA Mobile and control the car. To make the concept more fun we came with the idea of an office service called "Messenger Buddha" that would deliver notes and gifts to your colleagues and you could drive it through your iPod/iPhone.

<description>Alphabets / A short stop motion animation from nirvana soltani on Vimeo.

This short stop motion animation was the end result of a 5 days workshop part of the experience prototyping course, done in collaboration with Tatiana Pushkareva (ADV student in UID). We had Timo Arnall and Matt Cottam as our tutors.
The story creation and execution was done in 2 and half days. the story of the Alphabets was inspired by the fact that me and Tatiana coming from different countries with 2 different alphabets and writing styles. We have tried to bring out the characteristics of each language being Persian and Russian by associating colors and materials to the forms. It was more aimed to create the feeling of friendship between most different looking letters from very different cultures.
The biggest challenge apart from the lighting was the making of the letters and reform them for each frame.
The making of this also can be viewed here.

This project which was the last week of the experience prototyping course was an introduction to DMX lighting by Daniel Hirschmann.By practicing row column scanning and getting to work with DMX sheilds and Arduino, me and Joachim Falck-Hansen teamed up to use the last 24 hours on building the "Botanic Garden". A simple use of paper as the main material allowed us to focus more on the programing the RGB LEDs and make them to react to a proximity sensor. The garden would light up as you would approach and the distance would affect the colors.
It was a fun week full of soldering, electronics flashbacks to high school, untangling wires and beautiful lights.&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1277431/DSC_0735.JPG" width="670" height="448" width_o="2048" height_o="1370" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1277431/DSC_0735_o.JPG" data-mid="6368207"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1277431/IMG_2086.JPG" width="670" height="502" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1277431/IMG_2086_o.JPG" data-mid="6385755"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1277431/1.001.jpg" width="670" height="502" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1277431/1.001_o.jpg" data-mid="6743263"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1277431/2.001.jpg" width="670" height="440" width_o="982" height_o="646" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/83225/1277431/2.001_o.jpg" data-mid="6879317"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Sofieborg Service house from nirvana soltani on Vimeo.
Service design
This project was done incollaboration with Sogeti, an IT consultancy, working with Social service department of Umeå Municipality (Umeå Kommun) to develop an IT system to support the internal work processes within the organisation, in order to deliver a better quality public services to the community.

Myself and Yang chen as a team were looking into the service houses within the social service department. Service houses in Umeå are were elderlies can live under daily supervision and help of the staff in the service house. We were looking into see how can we make the information sharing between the Umeå Kommun's different levels of management and the service house staff more efficient. So in that way the quality of the service they are providing would improve, trying to keep their gaol in mind.

The ethnographic research and the interviews helped us understand how the service works now and the hierarchy in the social service departement. And from that we made the analysis on how is the current situation in terms of information sharing and what is the scope of it.
Here are the links for the results of the research summarized into animation format.

Elderly service houses hierarchy

Information sharing analysis

The costumer journey map

After that was a lot of brainstorming, going back to the service house and do a lot of user test, trying to talk to the elderlies and their families.

The challenge was to come up with a solution which is feasible and using the current existing technology and tools. So we wanted to bring in the transparency which was one of the main goals for the Kommun into the whole service, to do so we wanted to create a data base that all the related people can get the information they need, it was important to make the service accessible for each group in a way that the information load is right (not too much but enough).
And this was our story of the service.

And here is the interface wire frame of the online service from different users perspective.

In this project we were asked to investigate the topics of sound, imagery and action.
In a short exercise we explored the relationships between sounds, product identity and brand. We were asked to select an automobile brand and regenerate the sound catalogue of the car as if it was an electronic car.Our team which was me, Brian and Sor started to look into the car brands and decided to pick "Aston Martin V8 Vantage".

The Ambient Nights Project
Initial concepts were put in the context of transferring emotions from one user to another in a public space. These ideas were explored however, through user interviews and consultation from our tutor it was suggested that trying to read another users feelings and project them through light, vibration, and temperature outputs would be extremely inaccurate and less engaging. In order to start to change the behavior, the goal was to create an interactive and ubiquitous platform for strangers to meet. The concept of a shared space was investigated and resulted in the park as the space and the park bench as the object.

Physical Form Development
A variety of form iterations were also explored based on the feed back of the users. The development of circular form started off the concept. The change to a more geometric form was based on a more interactive physical form that allowed the user to create a variety of shapes. Semantics of the stereo speaker were also put into the final iteration to further make the connection between sound and the form of the bench. Then it was time to make the benches out of laminated birch wood and plexiglass, spending 3 full days in the workshop this was done.

Prototyping
A variety of tools were used in the execution of the prototype. As indicated in the diagram the following has been used: 2 arduino’s, pressure sensors on each bench, LED RGB’s,Voltmeter, Power Supply, 4 speakers, and a computer running Logic to create live audio output.

User Experience
By acting out a little story we presented our concept , then asking users to play. The response was positive, and a large vairety of user groups participated. We have been in contact with Umeå Kommun and hope to implement the project in a public space within the city and also got the opportunity to present our project as a selected poster in Create'10 in Edinburgh, Scotland June 2010.
