The task: to lead a transformation from sketches of the Trudo/Strijp-S exhibitor’s stand into a finished product. Niels Smeltink took on the entire production, from the technical drawings, to selecting the materials, giving design and event furnishing advice - and then making and assembling the final stand.

A visual delicacy, the O’ clock was given its name for many reasons. One, because it is round and hollow, just like the letter “O”. It is also inspired with the way we tell time in English – one o’clock, two o’clock. And when you realize how transparent it is, and you can appreciate the mechanism and artistry of it - your mouth forms that round shape, the letter “O”, once more. Delightfully innovative and with all the charm and craftsmanship of yesteryear.

The clock does not chime but it exudes a calming ‘tick tock’ to remind you to pay attention to feeling time, rather than reading it. And if you must read it you can read it from the front as you would read a digital time interface, or from the side as you would read an analogue clock. At 45 centimetres in diameter and in a numbered serie, the O’ clock is a majestic addition to a wall that deserves to be decorated with grandeur and elegance.

When you encounter KLOKby’s O’ clock, you’ll think about time differently.

From flood disasters such as the one in the Netherlands in 1953 to the tsunami in Japan in 2011, we are constantly reminded to be prepared, in new ways. This rescue kit is designed for people in risk areas far below sea level, to bring them to safety on their rooftops. Stored under the rooftop window, the rescue kit is thrown out of the window onto the roof when it then inflates to become a rescue platform. If water continues to rise above the rooftop level, the rescue raft can be detached from the component underneath. It can then be used as a water raft.

Through a Niels Smeltink network that continues to grow, this connection came about directly with the Director of Kingskin. This company makes a range of sustainable consumer products inspired by the properties of the durable bark of the mutabo tree – bark which can be harvested without damaging or felling the tree. This wine bottle gift and retail packaging by Niels Smeltink has been designed using a clever string base. This way, the empty, cylindrical wine bottle packaging can pack flat and be stacked during transit. Manufacturing production is planned in Uganda, under a Fair Trade label.

Rental bikes are popular all over Europe, and Brussels (Be) is no exception. The task was to envisage the Bike2Go basket, rear wheel cover and the handlebar, using a combination of existing parts and designed pieces. The final component of the project was to create the prototype of the final bike model.
