		<description>Uniquely distinctive, yet undeniably part of the convergent Ubuntu family, the Ubuntu mobile operating system is described as "looking more elegant than Android, and more functional than Windows Phone" by VentureBeat and was awarded Best of MWC by CNET at the Mobile World Congress 2013.

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_top_1_780.jpg" width="780" height="385" width_o="940" height_o="465" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_top_1_o.jpg" data-mid="29777481"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

I provided the brand elements, the initial look and feel and visual design patterns of the mobile operating system. Continuing my work from the Ubuntu Typography project along with aspects of the Ubuntu One music mobile app, while adding flexible, distinct elements to create a unique, undeniably Ubuntu experience.

The design of the Ubuntu phone builds on the strong typographic history of Ubuntu, with strong use of type and a distinct Ubuntu Shape derived from the Ubuntu font.

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/divider_780.jpg" width="780" height="1" width_o="780" height_o="1" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/divider_o.jpg" data-mid="29679499"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The Ubuntu Shape

A flexible rounded edged shape that can be stretched and moulded to meet differing needs at a variety of sizes was developed was a unique brand element.

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_shape_0_780.png" width="780" height="210" width_o="780" height_o="210" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_shape_0_o.png" data-mid="29672619"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Inspired by elements within the Ubuntu font, the shape sits comfortably with the bold use of text and is undeniably Ubuntu.

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_shape_1_780.png" width="780" height="140" width_o="780" height_o="140" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_shape_1_o.png" data-mid="29672621"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The flexibility of the Ubuntu shape is a key factor in maintaining the distinct look.

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_shape_2_780.png" width="780" height="455" width_o="780" height_o="455" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_shape_2_o.png" data-mid="29672622"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

As the look and feel develops, the influence of the Ubuntu shape can be see to spread further through the Ubuntu family.

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_shape_3_780.png" width="780" height="325" width_o="780" height_o="325" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_shape_3_o.png" data-mid="29672625"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/divider_780.jpg" width="780" height="1" width_o="780" height_o="1" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/divider_o.jpg" data-mid="29679499"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The 'Orange flash'

Originating from design and brand work for Ubuntu One website and mobile music app, a strip of orange, a key colour in the Ubuntu palette, is used to denote the presence of Ubuntu without being overwhelming.

"Cut in" dividers

An important element of the design when used in conjunction with type of the cut in dividers create structure within pages. Used in a small number of sizes, the dividers also help create meaning.

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_orangeflash_780.jpg" width="780" height="363" width_o="780" height_o="363" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_orangeflash_o.jpg" data-mid="29668200"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/divider_780.jpg" width="780" height="1" width_o="780" height_o="1" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/divider_o.jpg" data-mid="29679499"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Use of type

Typography plays a key role, making the operating system clear, legible and therefore easier to use while also re-enforcing the Ubuntu brand.

I provided the typographic framework, building on my earlier Ubuntu Typography project.

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_type_1_780.jpg" width="780" height="381" width_o="940" height_o="460" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_type_1_o.jpg" data-mid="29775330"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/divider_780.jpg" width="780" height="1" width_o="780" height_o="1" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/divider_o.jpg" data-mid="29679499"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Look &#38; feel

The styling of the mobile interface is deeply routed in that of the Ubuntu family, but is distinctive as a separate entity.

Utilising the above elements, I created the initial look and feel and visual design patterns of the interface. A further breakdown of some of these can been App Design Guidelines.

&#60;img src="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_layout_1_780.jpg" width="780" height="402" width_o="940" height_o="485" src_o="http://payload160.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/5506999/um_layout_1_o.jpg" data-mid="29776001"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

		<description>As the commercial cloud service offering from Ubuntu, Ubuntu One takes proud place on the desktops of Linux, PC and Mac and on Android and iOS devices, offering sync for files and photos along with a music streaming service.

Beginning by developing the existing brand assets while maintaing the relationship to the master Ubuntu brand, I provided an updated, more flexible logo along creating a comprehensive look and feel and associated documentation.

I delivered a flexible, simple yet expandable UX system and the look and feel for U1 Music Streaming for mobiles.

I also created the Files service UX redesign, a simple, flexible methodology which could be built upon for all other aspects of the Ubuntu One service.

&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/divider_780.jpg" width="780" height="1" width_o="780" height_o="1" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/divider_o.jpg" data-mid="29603594"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Brand Development &#38; Style Guide
Work included development of the logo into a well rounded, flexible asset, defining photography style and use and developing and commissioning the illustrative style and assets.

&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_logo_780.jpg" width="780" height="175" width_o="780" height_o="175" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_logo_o.jpg" data-mid="29597908"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_styleguide_1_780.jpg" width="780" height="276" width_o="780" height_o="276" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_styleguide_1_o.jpg" data-mid="29598591"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_styleguide_2_780.jpg" width="780" height="276" width_o="780" height_o="276" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_styleguide_2_o.jpg" data-mid="29598592"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_styleguide_3_780.jpg" width="780" height="276" width_o="780" height_o="276" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_styleguide_3_o.jpg" data-mid="29598594"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Look and feel, consistency
Taking the confused, cluttered and outdated U1 website as a starting point, the look and feel also addressed the question of what U1 was attempting to say to it's customers, streamlining sign-up, upgrade and clarifying the messaging at first point of contact.

This was then applied to the other aspects of U1, from web to mobile to social media.

&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_lookfeel_780.jpg" width="780" height="1212" width_o="780" height_o="1212" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_lookfeel_o.jpg" data-mid="29602695"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Development of the look and feel
Several routes were explored during the above development as the brief evolved. To view a sample of these, click here

UX User Registration and Upgrade
I provided a comprehensive audit of and consequently, streamlined process of registration and upgrade through the U1 website, taking the initial point of contact from a repeated message spread over 12 pages to a single page. By clarifying the sales message without loss of information or registration points I was able to provided clear, concise information at relevant points.

I was also able to streamline and simplify the upgrade process, from 9 pages to two.

&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_ux_1_780.jpg" width="780" height="276" width_o="780" height_o="276" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_ux_1_o.jpg" data-mid="29603229"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_ux_2_780.jpg" width="780" height="276" width_o="780" height_o="276" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_ux_2_o.jpg" data-mid="29603230"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_ux_3_780.jpg" width="780" height="276" width_o="780" height_o="276" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_ux_3_o.jpg" data-mid="29603232"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_ux_4_780.jpg" width="780" height="276" width_o="780" height_o="276" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_ux_4_o.jpg" data-mid="29603234"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Illustration style
A key element of both U1 and Ubuntu's brand are the pictograms and illustrations created by the legendary illustrator Peter Grundy.

I worked with Peter to create a series of illustrations representing the services offered by U1.

&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_illustration_780.jpg" width="780" height="386" width_o="780" height_o="386" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_illustration_o.jpg" data-mid="29603544"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/divider_780.jpg" width="780" height="1" width_o="780" height_o="1" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/divider_o.jpg" data-mid="29603594"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

UX: Mobile Music Streaming
I provided a unique, simple and flexible gesture driven interface for the mobile music service.

Flexible and expandable to other proposed mobile services, the interface addressed user needs on the given device while offering the expected functionality.

&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_music_ux_780.jpg" width="780" height="276" width_o="780" height_o="276" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_music_ux_o.jpg" data-mid="29603982"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Look and feel

Building on the global U1 branding work, the mobile music service fits into the family of products while also pushing the style forward.

 &#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_music_1_12_780.jpg" width="780" height="430" width_o="780" height_o="430" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_music_1_12_o.jpg" data-mid="29659985"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Pictograms
Working with Illustrator Peter Grundy a number of pictograms in the Ubuntu style were developed as buttons and navigational aids.

&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_music_pictograms_780.jpg" width="780" height="265" width_o="780" height_o="265" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/u1_music_pictograms_o.jpg" data-mid="29603932"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/divider_780.jpg" width="780" height="1" width_o="780" height_o="1" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/3479046/divider_o.jpg" data-mid="29603594"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

UX: U1 Files
A comprehensive redesign of the U1 Files service expanded upon it's scope and capabilities and addressed a number of historical user interface issues.

Conceived around a highly flexible design proposal, the service could adapt to a variety of needs, including expansion to other services within U1 on a variety of devices.

		<description>The Renault Owner Services website is centred around a community of Renault Owners allowing them to discuss their vehicles.

The user experience through the both the community and registration sections were simplified and streamlined while the look and feel was brought into line with Renault branding.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/1399224/divider_780.jpg" width="780" height="1" width_o="780" height_o="1" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/4867/1399224/divider_o.jpg" data-mid="30131865"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

My Renault Community Page

The Community pages were brought closer to the master brand while also improving hierarchy and legibility without changing the underlying structure.

Registration

The registration process went through a process of bringing it closer to the master brand while drastically improving legibility and flow.

		<description>Winner:
BIMA Award 2010: Content
BIMA Award 2010: Property and Engineering

A permanent exhibition at Galleria Ferrari Museum in Maranello, the 12 touch tables, 6 sound sticks and an augmented reality application are viewed by more than 200,000 visitors each year celebrating the long standing and successful technical relationship between Shell and Ferrari.

A strong use of augmented reality presents a genuinely interesting and novel method of navigating rich content, coupled with an elegant touch screen application, the workings of this long lasting relationship are brought to life using specifically created content.

Employing the new Shell visual identity, this project contributed to the concept and development of the digital side of Shell's brand.

Well received by both Shell and Ferrari, client comments included:
"The relationship between the Shell team and Digital has been very close, and I feel that 'Red Campus' shows the benefits of strong integration between branding, 3D and physical design and Digital."

"This is a fantastic achievement for the Galleria. Alonso liked it so much that he visited again the Galleria the morning after with his wife and a couple of friends."

Augmented Reality

The AR application allowed the user to explore a number of the unique Ferrari products up-close and in 3D including a running engine, a Ferrari California and the track side lab.

The look and feel of the AR application complimented that of the touch screen.
