This zone corresponds to the temperature range in which life is produced, exists and prospers, centered around 98.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Familiar animals species operate within this zone, as well as bacteria, viruses and parasites. The "Comfort Zone" borders on disgusting when we begin to consider teeming, writhing or festering life which can only be produced and sustained within wet hot environments. The objects that are included in Δ are informed by the "Comfort Zone" as well as the disquieting potential for our bodies to demonstrate their inevitable demise—manifested through ooze. We secrete, leak and flow constantly. However, when our bodies begin ooze we stare death in the face. Ooze, more than any other liquid process, enforces our boundary-less state; demonstrating that what is inside can easily find its way out. Coconut oil solidifies at or below room temperature. When the collar is worn, the heat from the body liquefies the oil and it slowly bleeds down the torso. The oil and food coloring mixture starts out very opaque, and becomes more translucent as it thins and is absorbed through the skin. The total transformation can take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the temperature of the wearer's skin and the environment they are in. With multitudes of sensory stimuli circulating around us, equally extreme visual and physical stimuli may be necessary to renew body consciousness and awareness of the flesh. My current body of work initiates a visual dialogue between objects and bodies. This dialogue promotes awareness in both wearers and observers, reminding us of the biological transformation our bodies are constantly going through. Not only do bodies grow and develop productively, they also deteriorate, degrade and ooze. However, these biological processes are often ignored and the ideal notion of a “bounded self” is accepted in place of the messy materiality our bodies actually exist in. The exterior latex tubing is filled with silicon sex lubricant which, when donned, injects lubricant through a series of tubes into the interior core of cast silicon. As the wearer slides their arm into the piece the cast silicon stretches, much like flesh, and self-lubricates the process, allowing it to be worn snugly at any level of the arm. Extra residue evaporates. This mouth piece hinges in the front to allow its insertion into the wearer’s mouth. Once in place, it locks and spreads the cheeks apart, forcing the wearer to bite down on the “U” shaped bar near their molars. This bar houses the end of a Talking Tape which has recorded sound (much like a record) of laughter on it. When the wearer drags their thumbnail along the tape, the recording is amplified throughout their oral cavity.
