		<description>The Tasmeem Hybrid Making Laboratories are full-scale explorations done through the act of making. For five days, groups made up of 20-25 students and faculty, led by invited international designers and artists, have designed and created full scale semi-permanent structures (walk-in sculptures), performances or other catalytic interventions.

Having the main goal of documenting the activities of the other labs, Lab M (Mike) has explored rapid video-making processes, mixing video-interviews, motion graphics, time-lapse and fast editing.
Students had actively observed the labs throughout the week and captured the ups and downs of the creation process in realtime.
The videos have been the core elements of the Labs exhibition which have been set up both at the Mathaf and the HBKU Student Centre.

Lab M (Mike) has been led by Simone Muscolino, Jorell Legaspi and Jordan Gushwa

		<description>"Blow away the dust from Type-Design by throwing it to the Street...”

Typography is everywhere. You see it in all kinds of shapes and forms; in books, posters, street signs, on the airplane, on the ground, everywhere. You’re used to it.
But when charts in the supermarket are transformed into king-size typeface, or when shadows create words that distort according to the route of the sun, that’s typography too.
We spoke to Underware to hear how they play for real with unexpected appearance of a typeface.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_01_905.jpg" width="800" height="400" width_o="800" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_01_o.jpg" data-mid="29386173"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Q. What is Underware?

A. Underware is a graphic design studio, specializing in designing and producing typefaces. These are often conventional in terms of legibility - yet contain concepts that seek for new visual, typographic and linguistic possibilities. These typefaces are published for retail sale or are custom designed.
Underwear is a kind of clothing for human beings, which we all wear, but doesn't have anything to do with Underware.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_02_905.jpg" width="800" height="412" width_o="800" height_o="412" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_02_o.jpg" data-mid="29386218"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
To put it differently: Underware is a family, Akiem, Bas, Sami, Amsterdam, Auto, bavaria-power, Bello, curves, customized, Den Haag, Dolly, digital, expanding, feeling, fine-tuning, flexible, flourishes, fonts, freak out, full-colour, graphic, hand drawn, Hugo, Helsinki, individual, just dry, KABK, Kerava, Lars, legendary, local, make-up, non-exclusive, non-ranging, oepsa, of course, Porto, partucilar problems, party, platform, printed-matter, private, queen, radical, Sauna, specialized, sexy, tailor-made, typo, useful, Unibody, up-to-date, venus, warmoranja &#38; different weights, xaxe, yoga &#38; zephyr.

Q. Nevertheless, We are curious to know how the name, Underware, came about..noticing that the second recommendation from Google, when doing a search, suggests a rather different story than producing typefaces...

A. I can give the long exiting version, or the short and boring one. The short and boring one is the truth. And it's going to sound like an old man's most favourite story, which he keeps on repeating without actually remembering the exact facts anymore. During our studies in KABK (Den Haag) we started to call ourselves Underground Typestudio, which sounded for us like a hobby style 80's group that tried to be cool, with little success. This was also our reaction to the really serious type business, and to really serious sound type foundry names. We didn't want that.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_03_905.jpg" width="800" height="444" width_o="800" height_o="444" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_03_o.jpg" data-mid="29386619"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
To test our brand we even made Underground Typestudio t-shirts with an early version of Sauna Black Italic. After a while the name didn't really convince us anymore, we wanted something shorter. Then, our Spanish friend and type designer Joan Carles Casasín dropped by at Den Haag. He had established a type foundry called Typerware earlier, and on one night during a party we decided to clash those two groups together. To sign an 'official contract' we needed a name. Put Underground Typestudio and Typerware together and there you have it.
Sorry, the name giving doesn't carry any dirty underwear gossips. We still like the name, although typing Underware in Google gives only lots of gay sites.

Q. How many are you and how do you work together? as I understand you are not all in the same location?

A. There's three of us: Akiem Helmling, Sami Kortemäki and myself. We all live in 3 different cities. It just happened. We don't plan everything so well in advance, our own personal wishes are the most important thing. It just happened to be that we have 3 different nationalities. Akiem is German and lives in Den Haag, Sami is Finnish and lives in Helsinki, I'm a Dutch guy living in Amsterdam. Everybody desperately wants to live in the city he's living in right now, so why move or travel if that is not necessary? Sometimes we all sit together at the same place, depending on the kind of project. Or for another project I go to Finland for a few weeks to work with Sami. The rest of the time we cooperate by email and phone. This varies all the time. This keeps working together fun, and our life attractive and fresh.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_04_905.jpg" width="800" height="377" width_o="800" height_o="377" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_04_o.jpg" data-mid="29386731"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Q. Could you tell me something about your various backgrounds?

A. Sami is Finnish, grew up in Kerava, studied in Lahti, and now lives in Helsinki. He likes to think upside down. Akiem is German, grew up in St. Leon Rot, studied in Mannheim, and now lives in Den Haag. On his surf board, he is the unscrupulous wave rider. I am Dutch, grew up in Wanssum, studied in Maastricht, and now live in Amsterdam. I'm the ultimate chocolate killer.

Q. How did Finn who likes to think upside down + a German wave rider + a chocolate killer from The Netherlands decide to start a company together?

A. As we cooperated on many projects while studying on the KABK in Den Haag. That's where we met. So it was a logical step to continue working together after we finished our studies. Sami moved back to Helsinki and I moved to Amsterdam because we both want to live in these cities. But this doesn't mean you can't keep on working together. So it was a very natural step, very logical, nothing forced or thought of.

Q. What does it mean to be a typography designer?

A. Do you mean 1) a typographer, 2) a designer, or 3) a type designer. Three different jobs, which we all are. 'Typography' relates to applying typefaces (graphic design), 'type design' relates to creating new typefaces. For me they are two different 'jobs'. However, they are related so quite often they can be combined by the same person.

Q.Who asks to have a font designed?

A. From us? Not too many people, we're too expensive I guess. We make custom fonts and custom versions of our fonts for bigger clients like newspapers, financial institutions, design agencies, printing houses, etc.

Q. Which companies buy your fonts?

A. This varies from designers to publishing houses, newspapers, and companies who use our fonts for their corporate identity. Basically, there are a lot of letters surrounding us, on facades, newspapers, flyers, books, sign systems, thesis, etc. If you look at it this way, almost everybody uses typefaces. Those who are aware of it are our clients.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_09_905.jpg" width="800" height="392" width_o="800" height_o="392" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_09_o.jpg" data-mid="29387993"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Q. What is your approach towards the hacking or misuse of commercial fonts?

A. Mmm… this can be a long and extensive story.
People can test the fonts on their computer, and then buy a license agreement when they are going to use the fonts. Right?
In that case: the situation at the moment is that mostly a designer has tons of 'illegal' fonts on his computer. When he is making 3 new proposals for his client for a new job, he won't buy 3 different typefaces to present 3 different sketches. Chances are that he will dig into his 'archive' and see what's lying around there. Then, when one of the proposals gets chosen, the designer will make sure to buy the right license for that font. I think this is the way it works in reality. Who would spend 800 Euro's on 3 different typefaces, if he only earns 1000 Euro's with the design sketches, knowing that only one typeface is needed? We're trying to face up to the situation, and offer a realistic, workable solution for designers. We allow them test our fonts, they can use them for presentations, but as soon as stuff gets printed or is being published or commercially used, a real license has to be purchased.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_10_905.jpg" width="800" height="509" width_o="800" height_o="509" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_10_o.jpg" data-mid="29388034"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
You know about our system of pre-licensing? We included a CD in every type specimen book we sell. If designers want to test our fonts, they are asked to buy one of these books. Available in most specialised bookshops in Europe. Of course, there is no way to check if people really do buy a proper license agreement in the end. But designers, who don't want to pay for a typeface, are able to 'obtain' or get any typeface. If the foundry is offering pre-licensing or not, doesn't matter for them. I can't prevent those designers from using illegal fonts. The only thing we can try to do is create awareness as to what type design really means, what the value of a typeface can be. This awareness is the only solution to the use of illegal software. Technical protection is very hard, and up till now I haven't seen any digital software which was technically unhackable.

Q. So you are saying that the system is based only on trust?

A. If you trust people, others will always find more freedom and responsibility, trust you as well, and give more back in the end. This is also how it works with pre-licensing fonts. It works.
Next to illegal use of our fonts, there is the issue of people 'creating' 'new' typefaces, which are based on our fonts. That's a different story.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_11_905.jpg" width="800" height="600" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_11_o.jpg" data-mid="29388115"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Q. Does it happen that someone directly creates 'new' typefaces based upon your designs and then publishes them?

A. Of course. But it's not the most attractive part of our work to talk about. Let's put it this way: as soon as it happens for the first time, it's a big compliment, because then you realise you have influenced people. Isn't that the biggest compliment one can receive?

Q. Truly so... Which font do you feel represents you the best?

A. Not one single font. Maybe our complete library in 20 years time...

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_12_905.jpg" width="800" height="600" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_12_o.jpg" data-mid="29388228"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Q. Do you imagine you still would be doing typefaces in 20 years time?

A. Mmm...we don't plan our lives that far ahead. I don't have a clue what I'll be interested in in 20 years time. Maybe I'll become a musician, Akiem a Hell Angel, and Sami will live on top of a mountain in Japan, making swords for a living. I wouldn't know. We just do what we are fascinated by at this moment. That's enough to make our lives interesting. I hope we keep on doing that in the future as well.

Q. 20 years is a long time with the speed of inventions we move with... What do you think a typeface designer does in 20 years...? What is the future of a typeface designer?

A. The utopian, ideal type would be a type which you don't have to read at all - you just feel it and directly understand the exact message . Straight from one brain to another without any noise or distortion along the way. With writing we can read a message, which was written hundreds of years ago, have a discussion with Greek philosophers, for example. So an utopian type is an eternal record, available for reading at any time. It should go beyond speaking, beyond words, because they have limitations. An author may want to leave a room for interpretations, for double meanings and misunderstandings. That should also be possible with an utopian type, as well as to get a sense of touch, taste, smell and size of an object. Plug and play.
But for sure it won't be there in 20 years. 200 maybe?

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_13_905.jpg" width="800" height="439" width_o="800" height_o="439" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_13_o.jpg" data-mid="29388332"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Q. Are you occupied only with typeface design? Do you also make other kinds of design?

A. Yes, we are also graphic designers, interactive designers, publishers, exhibition makers, radio makers, workshoppers, etc. All that stuff.

Q. Radio makers…?

A. Yep. Radio on type.
We thought it would be interesting. Typeradio is a non-commercial, non-profit radio-channel, concerned about type, text, language, typefaces, design and readers in its broadest way. Contributors vary from the world’s most famous designers to 6-year-old children who are learning to read. Typeradio is for everybody, also for analphabets!

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_14_905.jpg" width="800" height="400" width_o="800" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_14_o.jpg" data-mid="29388413"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The slogan is "Now we are talking". Another interesting slogan for Typeradio: "World wide there are 860 million illiterate adults. With Typeradio they all have a chance to learn more about texts, reading and typefaces."
Try to listen to some of the 'one minute of type' episodes...
As a designer you should always realise what you can and what you can't do. We are designers, not writers, not photographers, not musicians, and not radio-makers. But this doesn't mean we are limited to a 2-dimensional space to realise our ideas.
We think it's fascinating as type designers to make a radio program about type. A radio program which is not only meant for type designers, but for a broader audience. As I said, letters are everywhere. And for not staying on the visual surface, radio is an excellent medium to go deeper into the content and background stories. Maybe we/you will get new ideas on a visual subject, if we communicate in a non-visual way about it.

Q. Is it only the 3 of you that are giving your voices from your different locations?

A. Together with Donald Beekman (Amsterdam) and Liza Enebeis (Den Haag) the five of us are the full team of Typeradio.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_15_905.jpg" width="800" height="385" width_o="800" height_o="385" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_15_o.jpg" data-mid="29388526"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_16_905.jpg" width="800" height="451" width_o="800" height_o="451" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_16_o.jpg" data-mid="29388531"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Q. This issue of idCAST revolves around the theme of typography as it relates to architecture, space design, history, the digital/virtual dimensions of typography as well as sculpturing. Our previous theme was concerned with materials.
Your work with typefaces, especially your workshops, relate also to materials as I saw having met you during the last event of ‘Beyond Media’ in Florence. The result of your workshop was fantastic with the use of tiles. How do you choose the materials?

Q. We don't choose, the participants choose. The only exception was the 1 day workshop in Florence. It's up to the participants to develop their project in a certain direction. If that would need 3 dimensional materials, then they should search for one that fits their project, but also one that is realistic to find within the time frame of the workshop. In Florence there wasn't time at all to search and collect materials, so we had to arrange something in advance. As Marazzi (the manufacturer of the tiles) is one of the sponsors/connections of the organization it was an easy choice.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_17_905.jpg" width="800" height="463" width_o="800" height_o="463" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_17_o.jpg" data-mid="29388629"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_18_905.jpg" width="800" height="521" width_o="800" height_o="521" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_18_o.jpg" data-mid="29388630"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_19_905.jpg" width="800" height="297" width_o="800" height_o="297" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_19_o.jpg" data-mid="29388631"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Q. What do you like the most about giving a workshop? What do you hate the most?

A. The more you know about a subject the bigger the chance that you get a narrow point of view on it. The workshop is a very nice experience. It makes you awake and refreshes your point of view. Perhaps there are some things we know about type which the students do not know, but there are also lots of things that the students are doing, that are totally surprising for us. Sometimes it is hard to accept their approach , but once accepted it could result in unexpected and surprising works.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_20_905.jpg" width="800" height="459" width_o="800" height_o="459" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_20_o.jpg" data-mid="29390027"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
So for example I have to admit that I thought it would be a very stupid idea to create a type with shopping trolleys or books as some of our students did. But at the end I was totally convinced of the final result, and thing it is a very strong and unique piece.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_21_905.jpg" width="800" height="481" width_o="800" height_o="481" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_21_o.jpg" data-mid="29390028"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Q. Do you have any stories you can share with us?

A. Of course there are lots of them, but I would like to take some which highlight for a certain aspects, and which I really enjoyed.
One nice experience was when the students had to apply their sign-system type. They spontaneously decided to make a sign-system for the system operator of the academy. They even named the font after him - ‘Kees’. Looking at the picture will make it clear that the single style of the font had to be called Kees bold... It is amazing what type can do to people. It was definitely a day in Kees life which he will never ever forget. Even now there is a smile on his face when I see him at the academy. And believe it or not, I thought it is a stupid idea to make a sign system for a system administrator... but I've changed my mind.
Another story was with a one week-long workshop. One week is very short to design a type and to apply it. Especially on art academies, these kinds of projects tend to run for half a year or longer. Of course the types designed in these workshops are not final types, but more sketches, but still. And yes sometimes it happens that a group cooperates in a very euphoric way. And together they come up with these big public unbureaucratic works with a strong impact.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_22_905.jpg" width="800" height="531" width_o="800" height_o="531" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_22_o.jpg" data-mid="29390172"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_23_905.jpg" width="800" height="484" width_o="800" height_o="484" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_23_o.jpg" data-mid="29390174"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Sometimes I am are very skeptical about the things the students do. But if you shut up and give them the freedom they have the potential to come up with very convincing results. This was from a workshop we held in Detroit where the students ended up with a large woodcut stencil installation, called the "chopshop”.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_24_905.jpg" width="800" height="407" width_o="800" height_o="407" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_24_o.jpg" data-mid="29390218"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_25_905.jpg" width="800" height="599" width_o="800" height_o="599" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_25_o.jpg" data-mid="29390220"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_26_905.jpg" width="800" height="349" width_o="800" height_o="349" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_26_o.jpg" data-mid="29390221"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Q. One of the more fascinating aspects of your work is the difference in scale: words that are made for the computer screen and then some which are physical art landscapes. How do you choose the scale of your work?

Q. Typography has a lot of interesting subjects. As type design is a relatively slow process in the way we do it, the workshops are a unique way change for us to survey other interesting sides of typography. Subjects we just don't have the time for in our daily life. For example: try to make a typeface, which is still readable in 2 points. (For those who don't know how big 2 point: average text size is 10 points, 2 points would create more than 10 lines of text on 1 cm.

&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_27_905.jpg" width="800" height="425" width_o="800" height_o="425" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_27_o.jpg" data-mid="29390598"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_28_905.jpg" width="800" height="399" width_o="800" height_o="399" src_o="http://payload139.cargocollective.com/1/1/39236/5080835/UnderwareInterview_28_o.jpg" data-mid="29390599"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
I think that's a fascinating subject to research. But at the same time it's fascinating to research the possibilities of letterings created in public space. To create content for the lettering which fits for this specific location. Scale doesn't matter, it can be anything between these two extremes. As long as it can be realized within the time frame of the workshop (usually one week), any scale can be fine.

Q. What is it that fascinates you in working in large scale?

A. It can place type or typography in a different context. Already the large scale forces you to choose a certain location, and that location already influences the context of your text. Then you also have to choose a specific material to create your text with. This again adds another layer to your typography. A big scale frees typography from the safe A4-paper, the empty paper. It forces you to rethink your piece of type, because there are new ingredients added which can't be ignored. This brings about limitations, but also new perspectives, which I believe are very thought-provoking and intriguing.

Q. Have you ever thought about designing a building/word?

A. Not in the way that architects do when creating buildings. Sadly enough many of those boring flat 'typographic' buildings have been build, and still are. For example the flat complex in Moscow, which reads 'USSR' from above, looking out from the plane. Well, I guess you get the picture.
But yes, it can be fascinating to create a lettering that is like a city you can walk in. Last year we did a workshop in Genk, Belgium, about this subject: Moveable Type. People started to create a toilet out of the letters PIPI (meaning toilet), and the lettering by itself became a building of a toilet. By the end of the day, a jungle of letterings was created, a city you could walk through.

Q. How do you relate to new technologies? Have you ever worked with installations done in neon?...we have a world of references done with writings done in neon.

Not yet, but I love neon. A city like Amsterdam doesn't have convincing neon-letterings unfortunately. I would love to do something with neon-lettering one day.

Q. Perhaps you've heard of Mario Mertz, the artist, who has done some super interesting work using numbers and neon lights.

A. Yes. Actually there are many artists using neon letterings in their pieces of art. A famous example is of course Bruce Naumann. But I think neon-graveyards in the USA are just as fascinating. Those places around Las Vegas where old neon signs to, to rest in peace. Amazing. No wonder those locations are used in American movies.

Q. What references you use in your work? People, groups, music, films, books...

A. Of course, everybody is influenced by his/hers surroundings.
But I don't have a favorite book or so. If you would have asked me yesterday, I might have said '1984' by George Orwell. If you ask me today, I would say 'Livro do Desassossego' by Fernando Pessoa. It's a book you can keep on reading for the rest of your life. But if you would ask me tomorrow, I might say one of the incredible 'Sigmund sessions' by the Dutch comic artist Peter de Wit, or 'Moeder is een rover' by the Dutch poet Hans Verhagen. So basically it's a question which I can't answer.
There is no direct link from books to our work, neither from specific films or people. But of course, in general, our work is influenced by those things as well as people we see and meet... </description>

		<description>VCU Qatar, ART134 – Time Studio 2012-13

A 5x5 is a short video composed of five clips, five seconds each, and it must use original sound.
A 5x5 is a great way to tell a short story, illustrate a scene, or communicate a mood.
“The golden hour is that elusive period of time where the light is particularly special. The magic hour happens twice every day, the first and last hour of sunlight. Because the sun is near or just below the horizon, the natural light is soft, diffuse, and full of warm tones” (vimeo.com/blog/post:513)
5x5 is also a large group on Vimeo. With this students start to be exposed to a big community.

		<description>The workshop explored the use of Max/Msp, an interactive graphical programming environment for music and audio. Students have been introduced to the basics of Max’s programming interface and guided through the construction of a custom hardware controller, built with the Arduino TinkerKit.
TinkerKit simplifies and accelerates electronic prototyping, allowing the setup of interactive environments on the run, without soldering iron and breadboard.

		<description>The Moving Postcards Project is an innovative endeavor that documents changing life in Doha through a developing collection of video fragments. “Moving postcards” are micro-video loops that present a space, a behavior, or an atmosphere, particular to a local environment, in this collection, that of Qatar. Growing out of two years of Foundation-level student work at VCUQatar, the project provides glimpses into the landscapes and customs of a country in motion through the eyes of those who know it best.

The long portrait takes portraiture photography and transfers it to video. The result is a video that shows a subject’s subtle expressions, mannerisms, and gestures. The students shoot themselves for 5 minutes, standing in front of the camera. Then they select the best minute out of the footage and add a soundtrack in order to convey a certain kind of mood. They add personal information using simple graphics.
