HIVA OA
--

Hiva Oa is a three piece alternative band based in Edinburgh. Formed in 2010, they consist of Stephen (guitar/vocals), Christian (cello) and Marco (bass).

Their debut EP entitled ‘Future Nostalgia for sale’ is now available through mini50records.

Hiva Oa produce music with a fragile sense of melancholy, buried under a brooding darkness. Guitars, bass, cello, the odd piano and haunting vocals combine to create something unique and intensely evocative. Blending acoustic sounds with more experimental moments the band has created an EP and album that are distinct and immediately compelling. The beauty of Hiva Oa lies in the understated.

‘Future Nostalgia for sale’ is a precursor for the forthcoming debut album ‘The Awkward Hello, Handshake, Kiss.’, which is pencilled in for release in May 2012.

Press

‘Male and female vocals dovetail to a basic backing of guitar, bass and cello. From this starting pad, a more sensurround experience of glockenspiel and martial drums are thrown into a scratchily looped mix that swirls and sways its way into being.... Hiva Oa stick to the shadows, erupting into a rolling thunder before coming to a hush once more.’ - The List

‘It’s been a while since I heard a band for the first time and felt immediately obliged to write about them...This track certainly suggests a ton of potential, as it billows back and forth a brewing storm of droning hums and weathered strings amidst delicate vocals, which builds to a cathartic noisy cadence.’ - Sonic Reverie

‘Falling somewhere across dream pop, drone and shoegaze, new single Badger perfectly exemplifies what they’re all about.’ - The Tidal Wave of Indifference

‘To hear of them is to experience an adventurous, skewed take on poetic art rock with the resulting languorous melancholy inducing a near hypnotic state.’ - Bluesbunny Music Reviews

CONQUERING ANIMAL SOUND
--

Conquering Animal Sound is made up of Anneke Kampman and James Scott, residents of Edinburgh, UK. A musical project in it’s infancy but one that is filled with much promise and potential. Debut album ‘Kammerspiel’ was released on 7th February 2011– on Gizeh Records/mini50. You can order a copy of the record here The limited edition version of the record is now sold out but the Remix album featuring the likes of Errors and Fieldhead is available.

MAMMOETH
--

Once upon a time, in the cold isolated lands of North East Scotland, lived Russell Kostulin – aka Mammoeth – an as yet little known relative of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, with music in his blood and the ambition to write the perfect album in his heart. One day Russell decided to do just that and masterfully merged a love of telling tales – (grown and gathered from the darkest reaches of his vivid, metaphor filled imagination) – with his accomplished wizardry on multiple instruments and a classically trained touch on the old violin.

And ‘Nascent’ was born. An album influenced by eclectic tastes – from doo-woop to dubstep, hip-hop to power pop and a big dollop of American indie folk rock – and formed of beautifully structured, magnificently layered, jaunty, alt -pop perfect songs. Soaring melodies and violins, handclaps, harmonizing and a warming gentle feel of long hazy Summer nights spent drinking sweet whisky. However, as with all good story telling, never be fooled by the light, for look closely and beneath the surface lurks a dark lyrical underbelly, where ‘Nascent’s’ sweetly sick sourness creeps out its pores and songs about wendy houses, fathers and sons, stalkers, car crashes, dead sisters, war and politics, wives and exes and even Fresian cows jostle for attention, as if in a pop-up book of short bedtime stories.

As various characters – real and imagined – pop to life in the lyrics of each intricate song, the music comes alive with help from a collective of talented merry men. Twisted Nerve’s ex indie hero’s Alfie make an appearance with Sam Morris on horns and Matt McGeever on cello, evoking fond memories of Badly Drawn Boy and Twisted Nerve with their equally splendid penchant for off-kilter classic songs. An undoubtedly beautiful collaboration orchestrated by Nascent’s producer Robin Housman of Manchester’s Amplisound Studio’s. Our hero, Russell composed and played every other instrument, with the exception of drums (courtesy of Pete Marshall).

And so time past, creative juices worked their magic and the dream grew into a reality, with the music box already blasting out tracks courtesy of Tom Robinson on BBC6 Music, Janice Forsyth on BBC Scotland and Vic Galloway on Radio 1.

CAUGHT IN THE WAKE FOREVER
--

Caught In The Wake Forever is the solo project of musician &#38; home recording artist Fraser McGowan.

Having previously released work on London label ‘The Remains Of My Estate’ as lead singer of Paisley based miserablist’s Small Town Boredom. At the beginning of 2009 he began working on several instrumental pieces blending a more electronic approach with his already established lo-fi acoustic aesthetics.

These new tunes are characterised mainly by the use of rhodes piano &#38; classical guitar surrounded by the subtle warmth of electronics, string machines &#38; dictaphone field recordings.

Debut EP entitled ‘All The Hurt That Hinders Home’ was released on 13 June 2011. The 5 track EP is available as both a digital download or cd. The physical product features 5 bonus remixes by Library Tapes, Fieldhead, Yellow6, Sketches for Albinos and Jonnie Common. These are not available as downloads at this time.

LANGUAGE OF LANDSCAPE
_

Language of Landscape comprise of Cory Zaradur and Chris Tenz. Based in Calgary, Canada they create musical soundscapes that evoke thoughts of cold winter days. The musical landscapes that they create are drenched in beauty and punctuated by simple, gorgeous piano motifs.

In January 2010 they released an improvised minimal piece on a 3" cdr. These tracks were limited to 5 copies each. Though all hard copies are now sold out, the entire series entitled "memories fade under a shallow autumn snow", is now available for free download on their bandcamp page.

A live recording captured towards the end of 2010 was released on mini50 in September 2011 which you can buy here.

DAVID NEWLYN
--

David Newlyn records and edits his music at home. The tracks are constructed using piano, strings, prepared guitar, acoustic guitar and electric guitar. They sometimes feature recordings made elsewhere on cassette dictaphone or digital camera. He runs his own small cdr label Cathedral Transmissions and is a keen photographer (usually of derelict sites and buildings).

'Too Late In The Wrong Rain', his latest record was released in May 2011 as a digital download only. You can get your hands on it here.

THE KAYS LAVELLE
--

The Kays Lavelle is from Edinburgh. Their debut album ‘Be Still This Gentle Morning’ was originally released in May 2010. Recorded by Neil Pennycook of Meursault and Alex Fenton of Fentek Audio and mastered by Jonnie Common.

‘Be Still This Gentle Morning’ evokes other bands such as Sigur Ros, Elbow and Sparklehorse, however, what makes it uniquely its own is a fragile sense of melancholy buried under a brooding darkness. The album reveals itself slowly with a well placed subtlety never breaking nor building towards a deafening crescendo, its strength lies in the understated.

The album is available from the mini50 shop on cd as well as digital download from bandcamp, itunes, e-music and other online outlets.

Work has begun on the follow up to 'Be Still...' entiled 'Always, Already' with a planned 2013 release date. Keep an eye out here for more information on this.

Press

"The Kays Lavelle have produced an intense, atmospheric and utterly beautiful album" - Stereokill.net

"They create the kind of music that a number of enormous stadium munching mega-acts THINK they’re making, just without the intimacy, honesty, charisma and quality songwriting." - The Tidal Wave Of Indifference

"It’s within the shadowed side of The Kays Lavelle that there’s true worth" - The Skinny

"a deeply textured and evocative album, and as worthy a companion as one could wish for on a late lonely evening." - Sonic Reverie

CHRIS TENZ

Chris Tenz is a Calgary (Canada) born self taught multi-instrumentalist. Since the release of his debut record in June, 2009, he has tirelessly worked on expanding his sound with two solo projects, and as one half of “Language of Landscape”. His work consistently relies on mood and subtlety, never trying to hide or distract from the honest emotion being conveyed.

For over a year, he has turned his attention towards his local community, creating and organising unique events to help expose and connect many local artists of various disciplines. He has also been collaborating with theater and film producers, performing, and in October 2010 released two hand packaged, extremely limited full length solo albums which were sold at local performances only.

His new record 'Frozen Arms' was released in December 2011 on mini50 and can be purchased here.

LOZNINGER
--

(image 21}
Benjamin Løzninger is involved in so many projects (musical and non-musical) that he himself probably doesn't know them all. An unverified rumour claims he used to be an active member of the cult french collective Oslø Telescopic, famous for having kidnapped the famous french indie-singer Dominique A and for their hysterical shows around Europe. Lately, he has also been involved with the Elektrisk Gønner crew, a discopunk combo.

Løzninger, his solo project, was launched between France and Canada, after his daughter was born. Mixing acoustic sounds and mellow whispered vocal with more electronic soundscapes gives birth to some haunting moments not dissimilar to Sparklehore, Vic Chesnutt or dEUS.

He has supported the likes of Jose Gonzales, Vic Chesnutt, Espers, Stars, Chris Garneau, Keren Ann, Windmill and Edith Frost to name a few.

His new record 'Moving Targets' was be released on mini50 in October 2011 and can be purchased here.</description>

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL

A massive Happy New Year to everyone. Kind of cannot believe it's 2012 already, seems no time since we posted our best wishes for 2011!

Anyways, 2012 will be an exciting time for mini50 and one that we hope will result in the release of plenty of new music for your listening pleasure.

At this time we have no scheduled releases and are actively looking for new artists and demo's. If you'd like us to consider your music for release please do drop us a line at mini50records@hotmail.co.uk but also please check out this website before you do and ensure that the music you send is in keeping with what we might release. For example, if you are a bluegrass band whilst we might love what you do, we may not be willing or able to release your music. So yeah, please just have a wee look on the site and see what we're all about.

Couple of big plans for 2012. One which won't happen until December and one which may happen much sooner. Keep your eyes on this site for more information.

In the meantime, if you have not already done so, pop over to our BANDCAMP page to find all the music that we have on offer.

All the best for 2012. xo

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL.

It's a new year and one we at mini50 are very excited about indeed.

First off, another artist has been added to the mini50 roster in the shape of David Newlyn. David is an English based artist who creates music using piano, strings, prepared guitar, acoustic and electric guitar as well as sometimes featuring recordings made elsewhere - on cassette dictaphone or digital camera. He will be releasing a record with mini50, initially as a download only, later this year. We are very excited to have him join our family and look forward to releasing his work later in the year.

We are also very excited to announce that along with future Language of Landscape releases, mini50 will also be releasing the work of Chris Tenz. Chris is one half of Language of Landscape but you can expect a full length solo record from Chris sometime later in 2011.

A reminder that Conquering Animal Sounds debut record 'Kammerspiel' will be released jointly on mini50 and gizeh records on 7th February 2011. You can pre-order a limited edition copy of the cd now at gizeh's website and whilst you are there, why not browse their online shop and check out the January sale that is currently on.

As well as the above, from March onwards you will be able to buy The Kays Lavelle's debut album 'Be Still This Gentle Morning' from this website. The album will be re-released in March 2011 and will be available as a cd or digital download.

Keep an eye out on the website for more news on all our artists.
