I started the illustration in September when this idea popped into my head for an announcement. Though the knight and horse didn't change much, i spent most of the time working on the Castle, village, and background sunset, ditching early colors, textures and gradients to end up with the simple and flat approach I arrived at.

The influences are far and wide - ranging between the obvious to obscure. Some of them include Chuck Jones, Dinsey's Sleeping Beauty, Wes Anderson, Invisible Creature, DKNG, LEGO Castle & Kingdom sets and a friend's sunset instagram shots. oh yeah, and orange sherbet.

i made this poster size at 20x16 and plan to get it printed and framed soon to hang up on baby Benicio's wall.

I hope he digs it.

Sean & Jessica Sutherland Wedding Table Art -

August 12, 2011 - Comic book influenced art created for my good friend Sean's wedding (I was also a groomsman). Each illustration was spread out over the 9 tables. Each drawing represented an "era" - and was applied to 2-3 tables except for Table 9 which was reserved solely for the newlyweds. All headers and graphics were also designed by me based on their wedding color, "Sangria".

These pieces were created for my wedding in May 2012. I began the project in January and the project took me 4 months to complete. We had the pieces screen printed at Kangaroo Press in Nashville, TN. We also printed up the red monogram logo on tote bags which we gave to the groomsmen, bridesmaids, and family members.

The monogrammed logo was something I wanted from the start. I thought it would be a graphic and punchy way to draw in the recipient's attention. The design was created with old record labels in mind, which was subsequently applied to my record/record player Grooms-cake (complete with moving arm!). The cake was designed by my sister-in-law and i think she did a fantastic job applying the logo to the cake, giving it exactly the look i had in mind when designing it.

The Announcement piece was designed to give a hint of what was to come. My wife crafted pinwheels, took mason jars and dyed them blue, and also made pennants on string that connected it all together. The screen printer, Ryan suggested that we round off the corners because the blue-backs looked like playing cards. I liked that idea so that became the final step.

We got married in a very quaint place and all my wife's hard work really showed. I'm really proud that we pulled it all off, and i don't think I could've done the job i had with these invites without her.

I studied the the “MICHIGAN” type from my old license plate as well various other vintage plates (such as Québec, Kentucky, etc.) to get a cohesive look to the characters not inherent to the Michigan name.

I built the specimen from specifically sized modular parts in Illustrator. From there, I applied curving in the joints, due to the original embossed nature in the final presentation of older plates - but I also tried to keep it more consistent throughout.
Nightfall Media - "Woodrow the Owl"

I tried a couple different treatments that focused more on the crescent moon shape and typography. After a while, the client and I agreed that the earlier concepts weren't cutting it so i sequestered myself away and really reflected on what the client's video production business really meant to him and how that translated visually to me.

Luckily this idea struck me - to combine a nite-owl work ethic with media production motifs. This created an organic familiarity with both ideas which were weaved together to really make it pop and be recognizable. The colors are simple yet strong and I believe this versatile identity will really help get the client with future business.

Concepts and design were brought to me in various forms of completion. I was brought on board to finalize the logo design and puzzle design as well as create a custom 16 color palette and geometric shapes for this initial puzzle, and future puzzles to come.

The basic idea of the puzzle is to combine a learning of the musical alphabet in conjunction with geometry and color.

The puzzles are screen printed onto wood and laser cut. The puzzles are then wrapped in newsprint or craft paper and sealed with a B&W logo sticker.

I also felt that the linework should hit against the edge of the border to reinforce the "blueprint" and "not yet finished" parallels." border="0" align="left"/>
