The Concept
The Estadio represents a new generation of conceptual stadium design. As home to the Midei XXXX (not named yet), The Estadio trumpets the unique conceptual possibilities of dynamic/movable architecture in a baseball environment. Baseball, a game of inches, is challenged to remain adaptive and flexible to its habitat with a home run fence that changes in height and distance on a daily basis. Movable walls and collapsible outfield seating systems are adjusted for each game based on a simple mathematical (and artistically inspired) algorithm — so the stadium, the playing surface, and the game itself is never the same twice. A towering 380 ft. home run to left on Wednesday is a lazy fly ball on Thursday. A ball caught at the warning track one night is just out of reach over a leaping outfielder the next night. Fluid seating becomes available in larger or smaller quantities the day of the game, and seats are offered on a first come, first serve basis to Midei XXXX fans at a slashed rate on game day.

Known both lovingly and loathingly (depending on its most recent passive contribution to game play) as ‘The Glacier’, the wall is broken up into 9 interlocking straight-walled sections —three each for left, center, and right field. Built upon a massive series of subterranean tracks, the walls are pulled in and out and up and down based on that day’s randomly generated dimensions. The outfield bleachers on the field/wall level collapse into and extend from the permanent second level structure behind them, creating fewer or more seats per section. All seats within the ‘subduction zone’ are
collapsible and are automatically tucked away under floor level during subduction. The angle of incline for the seats immediately behind the wall is altered based on the difference between the height of the wall and the fixed height of the subduction track.

Fans and critics of ‘The Glacier’ agree that its unpredictability brings a new dimension to strategic decision making from the bench – altering pitching-change decisions, pinch batter decisions, affecting the shift put in to place for pull hitters, significantly revising the pitch selection and pitch location for each hitter, and so on. For some particularly dramatic wall configurations, many common strategies are thrown completely out of balance, and managers must risk a win by playing towards or against the outfield wall’s quirks. The most talented hitters are said to place the ball towards that day’s most advantageous gaps.

Tracking System Concept
The Estadio also boasts a robust baseball tracking system, capable of illustrating the exact trajectory of any ball in play. Speed, curve, rotation, distance, height, warping at contact with the bat, and any other conceivable physical characteristic is monitored from a series of tracking stations positioned around the stadium. Data is collected from a nanotech-’dusted’ game ball surface at a rate of 60 readings per second. The full-coverage of the ball provides a 3D reading of the surface of the ball at all times, without affecting the textural qualities of the leather or stitching. Data is currently used for the internal analysis of game play by the Midei XXXX, as well as broadcast analysis of pitch location, close plays on the base paths, foul vs. fair judgements, home run distance, and the velocity of balls put into play. The use of this technology has not been permitted for instant replay to date, because that just wouldn’t be cosmically OK with the baseball gods.

League Play
The Midei XXXX is an independent professional baseball franchise competing in a loose arrangement of teams from around the world. There has been a movement to solidify this group of teams into a global league of top-tier independent baseball clubs, which would compete in a series of ‘sessions’ hosted by each home team (teams would be located around the world, and regular 3-game series travel wouldn’t be worthwhile. Sessions would last for 1 month, with each of the league’s teams competing against all other teams at that session’s home team’s stadium. There would be constant baseball for 1 full month, and league rankings and positions would be logged and added to previous sessions. Multi-team playoff tournaments would be held at a the league leaders’ home field. The Midei XXXX have also competed with notable success against Major League franchises in the United States, Mexico, The Dominican Republic, South Korea, China and Japan.

Beyond Baseball
The Estadio hosts numerous events (baseball-related and otherwise) throughout the year. Within the stadium walls are a broad array of social and business-friendly accommodations, including 3 hotels, convention space, theaters, restaurants, and a baseball-themed museum including galleries, exhibits, and an interactive game park with batting cages, simulators, and a working classic wooden bat manufacturing facility. Exhibition games between the world’s finest clubs, as well as international tournaments and competitions are held at The Estadio each Fall and Winter, bringing in large international crowds for a truly unique baseball experience.

The Concept
The Rooftop Gardens are an array of publicly accessible gardens in the Maeda district of Midei City. The gardens are situated atop a network of brick and stone apartment buildings above the winding streets of Maeda’s riverwalk. They are interconnected through a series of bridges and skywalks, and are accessible from street level either through the buildings themselves (if access is open to the public), or through one of 4 external elevators/staircases.

The gardens are redesigned by private sector designers on a rotating basis, with most plots reworked every 2 years. The personality of the gardens on both the macro and micro levels is constantly evolving, so no two visits are ever alike. Seasonal exhibitions and competitions are held every 3 months, drawing large eco-tourism crowds from inside and outside the city. All selected garden designs are funded by Cultural Division grants, with maintenance responsibilities falling to the designer with strict guidelines for upkeep.

The Midei City Cultural Division organizes and selects garden designers based on proposals submitted from around the world, and competition is formidable. The Cultural Council chooses contributors based on the aesthetics, ingenuity (or mastery of traditional styles), and the unique conceptual approach represented in the proposal, along with considerations for the overall diversity of the gardens’ aesthetics and biological diversity.

The Rooftop Gardens are scattered with cafes, tea houses, and gourmet tamalerías, all privately owned, and independent of the buildings upon which they sit. Leases are owned by the city, and fees are paid to the building ownership on a yearly basis. This symbiotic coexistence between private and city property within a single location is common in Midei City. The Rooftop gardens represent urban spacial economy, green beautification, great views, a living artistic treasure, and a cultural icon for the Maeda District.

The Midei City Greens Division maintains the public walkways and inter-rooftop bridge and stairway systems, as well as maintaining the non-display sections of the gardens themselves. The Rooftop Gardens are open 24 hours a day, as are most public parks in Midei City, but access and headcounts are monitored for safety reasons. Security is provided by the Midei City Security Division with all-hours video surveillance and occasional on-foot presence within the gardens.

The Concept
The Walls is an outdoor public-space art exhibit and art-park located just outside of the Maeda District in north-eastern Midei City. It is characterized by its large array of wall-sized murals, stepped up the side of a hill overlooking the Isogashii River. Each planar surface of the Walls showcases the work of a local artist, invited by the Midei City Cultural Division to participate. Every 3 years, a new series of artists is brought in to paint over the work of their segment’s previous inhabitant.

Visitors to the park can walk/hike through 6 levels of murals, with each level connected to the next by staircases embedded behind the walls—rising up to the grassy surface of the next level. Each ‘step’ is between 30 and 50 feet wide, with wall heights ranging between 8 and 12 feet. Each level has a series of benches facing both towards the artworks and away from the hillside, providing remarkable views across the rooftops of Maeda.

The Midei City Cultural Division maintains The Walls as part of its effort to support the urban arts, and to provide a permanent outdoor public gallery for the promotion of open-air murals as fine art.

The Concept
The Strolls is a mixed-use shopping, dining, and residential microdistrict in the heart of downtown Midei City. With motorized traffic prohibited on the surface street over a 16 block span, The Strolls attracts day trippers, shoppers, breakdancers, tourists, and a diverse cross-section of the larger population, all of whom can ‘stroll’ at their leisure through the narrow winding streets. Situated by the old town center, the Strolls is lined with old-construction rowhouses containing shops and restaurants facing the sidewalks on multiple levels.

More recent developments have maintained the stone and brick characteristics while infusing new concepts in urban shopping and leisure. Elaborate multi-level public skywalks hug the sides of shopping buildings, and bridge across the streets below. Humble storefronts lead to elaborate indoor markets and shopping centers. Rooftop restaurant patios enjoy views over the bay. Dense crowds during lunchtimes and on the weekends create vibrant and energized urban scenery. Street performers are everywhere, and the bright colors of the dimensional commercial signage combine with the motion below to create a near circus-like atmosphere. As a general rule, the farther from street level that you climb, the better your chances of a comfortable seat and a quiet cup of coffee.

In order to keep the densely compacted businesses and residential buildings supplied in this pedestrian-only district, a network of underground access roads have been cut into the earth below the Strolls. Permits are required to enter the access road network, and security checks are thorough. Once beneath the Strolls, cars and small trucks can load supplies into elevators or dumbwaiters for delivery to the businesses above.
