Remains in the End Times
Gallery exhibition curated and designed by Jesse Lee Stout
December 2nd, 2011 — January 5th, 2012
The Popular Workshop Gallery, San Francisco , Calif.

The Popular Workshop Gallery and Table of Contents presented, Remains in the End Times, a group exhibition of experimental video, audio, sculpture, and prints curated by Jesse Lee Stout The San Francisco based exhibit was held from December 2nd, 2011 — January 5th, 2012.

Remains in the End Times, held in a city notorious for devastating earthquakes and the pioneering of early psychedelia, presents a paradigm of apocalyptic hallucinations and "tech-gnosis" contrasting modernity with ruination. The show title, partially derived from Slavoj Žižek's 2010 opus Living in the End Times, expands the proposition that there is no pending big bang, no End of Days — on the contrary, society is already immersed in this so-called Doomsday. As a result, a slow transformation has drifted us into a world where smog-ridden skies became the most beautiful sunsets imaginable and the white noise of a television lulls us to sleep at night.

Utilizing disposable technology, deteriorated media, and derelict landscapes as a conceptual foundation, these artists have transformed ruination into mature experiential works that unearth a new psychedelia. Rather than illustrating drug experiences, as in the case of hypnotic works of the 1960s, these works mesmerize and overwhelm the senses by way of reshaping the entropy and chaos of techno-inundated modern life — both helping us escaping our reality while firmly planting ourselves in it.

James Goggin Lecture
*Nominated for a 2011 Adobe Design Achievements Award (ADAA) in Print Communications.

A series of modular wall announcements for a lecture at CalArts by James Goggin (Practise), Design Director at the Chicago MCA. Each announcement consisted of 28 - 8.5" x 8.5" adhesive tiles. The system consists of 41 individually designed tiles that once printed, were randomly mixed together and re-printed — allowing thousands of possible combinations. Once applied to the walls, the students of the institute were encouraged to remove and reapply the titles in undetermined configurations. The arrangements shown are inspired by mid-20th century cryptographic typesetting.

Commuter Dance Festival
Stop. Go. Turn. Wrong Way. The Commuter Dance Festival invites established dance troupes from Los Angels up to CalArts—it can be a bit of a commute. For the design, I took inspiration from the bird's eye view of city traffic, using twisting typography, rules, and icons to allude to movement, traffic, and the systematic chaos of driving in Los Angeles. The colors: shades of red and green refer to traffic lights that control the movement of the streets.

Sun is an abstract play based on a poem regarding the murder of Malcolm X. All of the characters in the performance were either planets or scientists. I created a large splotch in the center of the screen by shooting water via a pressure "gun" through the emulsion. This "wound," eventually printed in day-glow orange, was then used to allude to the sun, thus the play revolves around the death of Malcolm X. Crosshairs were added that speak both to the aiming device on gun and the grid of the monitors that display the moon terrain.

Artist Lecture
Standing at about 6' 4" and probably over 300lbs (hence a 'Big Boy'), artist Martin Kersels is known for his tragically comedic, almost slap-stick performative works. Many of his works consist of objects (including himself or friends) being tossed and tumbled throughout the air that leaves an audience clenching their teeth while laughing.

The design was displayed as a triptych. By using a simple printing technique as rotating the poster paper during printing, I was able to achieve an effect showing a loosely animated sequence of the posters' contents spinning and in free-fall chaos, uncertain where the graphics would fall on the page.

British Art Now
Exhibition catalog for Newspeak, a show of new British art held at the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia. The show is jointly presented by the Hermitage and the Saatchi Gallery, which will host an expanded version of the show in two parts during 2010.
The catalog's design is influenced by the Orwellian title in addition to the story of Alexander Litvinenko, an ex-KGB officer turned British journalist and fatally poisoned for exposing corruption in modern day Russia. The radioactive poison, Polonium, destroyed Litvinenko over the course of a month. Therefore, a deliberate attempt was made to connote radioactivity, graphic-visual-typographic corruption, and decay throughout the book.

Approx. 130 pgs.
Full color + florescent green + day-glow inks

Designers Family Tree
2 spreads I designed in collaboration with the Sudeshna Pantham in the March 2011 issue of PRINT magazine with guest art directors Counterspace. Our design was also repurposed throughout the issue, including the cover.

The spreads show a "family tree" of American graphic designers, studios, and institutes.

Michael Worthington of Counterspace Design brought me on to curate and design a spread in this UK design magazine. The article, written by Worthington, describes a resurgence in "fractured" or exploded lettering design among current graphic design students.

Zine containing celebrity “Tweets” taken verbatim from their official Twitter accounts combined with found imagery. The publication addresses the permanence and often frivolousness of online publishing.

Through juxtaposition and visual metaphors, a running
commentary is conducted and delivered with a bit of sarcasm.
