Not only do I still have to finish my graduation books, I'm also doing portfolios, guest books and song books on the side. Doing a lot of things at once is not smart but it does get you nice books. Here is the first book project, more to follow. Boumansliedjes It is a tradition in my mother's family to write new lyrics for existing songs when someone is having a birthday or anniversary, and then perform the song for them. Since I like the songs as well as the tradition, ánd this weekend is family weekend, I've collected all the songs in these books (eight of them: different looks, same content). Each book has three parts, of different categories in the song-making. Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht) started with the feeling I get when people tell me a secret. I use the word 'secret', but I actually mean any personal fact or story, that is told to me in confidence. Personal stories make me feel touched and soft and cuddly inside, because I get to keep them safe in my body and protect them. People often tell me their secrets. But in the light of the information era, openness suddenly seems naïve. Because if we share a lot of information about ourselves, what will the other people do with it? What does the government want with our data, and where does our information go in the digital world? When our personal information gets out of our reach, it makes us vulnerable. In the research for my thesis, that's the conclusion I had to come to. So, what did I have to do now? Conclude that it is dangerous to share who we are, because people could misuse that information and harm us? I didn't want to let that happen. So I made a plan for humanity to maintain openness, even in these times of information overloads and the risks that come with those. That plan is, to not make givers of information responsible for what happens with the information, but the listeners. When you receive information, you receive trust. Without secrets there cannot be trust. Without openness there can be no bonds between people. So you, the person that has been given a secret, are the one that has to be worthy of that trust, by protecting the secret. You have to be the tin people can put their secrets in. In my project, I've invited people to tell me their secret. And telling me would not be risk-free. I have made illustrations of the secrets, with the person that told me the secret playing an essential part in the drawing. In a book with all these images, not only the faces, but also the names and birth years of the storytellers are put down. Though, they are hidden under a layer that the owner of the book could or could not scratch off. The point of these censored people, is to give the audience a choice in what to do with the trust they have been given. Will they scratch, and reveal the person of which the secret is? I wondered if I would feel -or be- more vulnerable when I let go of my secrets. I chose my appearance as a subject that I felt vulnerable about, and something that I worked on to prevent people from seeing everything. So I let my friend take some fugly-ass pictures of me, me without make up and with stupid clothes on and not holding my tummy and not having used deodorant (!), and, most importantly, not wearing my most charming face expression. Then I printed the most awful bunch of photos and carried them through the school, asking people to write their opinion about me on the prints. Then i hung them on the wall. The comments were merciless (except for one heartwarming "you're still great!"), but my hypothesis was confirmed: now that people had seen me at my "worst" nothing changed in their feeling towards me. The thing that did change, was my feeling of myself towards others. I didn't have to hide things about myself or be careful about my appearance anymore. That indeed did make me feel less vulnerable, whilst in fact I was more vulnerable because I had shown myself without any tricks. The reason this story is so long, is because that particular project influenced me in both my life ånd my (as we speak growing) graduation project. The dollhouse you see I made when I was eight years old. At that age I wanted to make a paradise-like house with all these shelter-like places for a tiny being to feel ultimately safe in. And when that was done, I would hopefully turn into such a tiny being myself and live in my dollhouse happily ever after. Now that I'm older, I still have that craving feeling to hide away and be safe. I asked other people about their hiding-away-behaviour and made their answers my inspiration for items of clothing. Like: a hat for a girl that likes to put her head in her cat. Or the hat for the girl who hides behind her boyfriend, with on the hat the face of the boyfriend. The spine-shirt is about feeling exposed to the world. The grey suit is my own escape from the world; I still wear it a lot because it can literally close you off from the world around you.
