<description>The World of Coffee map was a personal undertaking of mine for an independent study course. My vast interest (and addiction) in coffee was something that I wanted to visualize on a global scale.

The world economy of coffee is comprised of two parts: the growing and export plus the import and market sale. From here, I wanted to show the distribution of the growers vs the importers. These international exports are geographically weighted in a sense of climate. Despite this seemingly obvious claim, the map takes on another, more important role. That is, showing the change in exports and imports over the past decade to see where the world of coffee is growing.

The extensive database of the coffee economy (World Coffee Organization) was only skimmed by this map and has much more to offer to the visual and spatial world.

<description>This logo was made for a client, The National Center for Freight and Infrastructure Research and Education, who were looking to brand a project within their organization. I was given the three words, 'Corridors', 'Connections' and 'Colaboration' and asked for a simple yet effective logo that could be easily used and reproduced. The project deals with transportation connectivity so making the logo's image all-inclusive and connected was important.

It's a simple logo, but I believe it will be quite effective and recognizable for the project as it progresses.

<description>This publication was put out by the Land Tenure Center, a department in the university (UW-Madison) that deals with international carbon rights and carbon commons. The original part of this project included the creation of maps for each chapter of the publication. It quickly turned into the creation of the entire publication, including the layout and overall informational design. The 120-page set of case-studies required a enormous amount of editing between different departments and continuous attention on the order and consistency of design across different case studies.

The full publication can be viewed here.

Other collaborators on this project include: USAID, TransLinks, and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at UW-Madison

<description>Here's a study I helped start and complete for my capstone class for the GIS/Cartography Certificate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Our overriding mission was to take a look at the access to public, state recreation from urban areas of Wisconsin. The group project required the creation, evolution, and implementation of this full-scale case study. With multitudes of data at our hand, we designed and built a series of four maps dealing with different recreation types and their accessibility from 18 urban centers of Wisconsin.

The symbology of the maps was the more difficult part to create. They needed to show some sort of visual trend and still hold values for the more curious viewer. As you can see, the maps can be glanced at quickly for general trends with types of recreation. If one wants more specific number ranges, they may refer to the legend for raw numbers.

*These maps were part of a classroom project, and do not reflect the most holistic view of Wisconsin (and midwestern) recreation. With future research and implementation, we would like to bring this project to the scale of the United States and make it a part of a more inclusive study focusing on 'Livability' of cities.

**These maps were accompanied by a more extensive paper, that explains the trends and implementation more extensively. [link coming soon]

A major part of this project involved the creation of effective presentation techniques, including a final presentation that was geared towards the general, informed public, rather than GIS specialists. Below are a few slides from the power point. It is important to remember who your audience is. This can drastically affect what you present and how you present it.

<description>My portfolio website is a project of mine that has taken on a larger role than I originally expected. I have no background in programming or HTML design but have a strong desire to learn. I figured putting together a portfolio website would be the best way to learn and to stay productive. Little did I know the complex world I was getting into.

From the start of my HTML and CSS life, I've been very interested and excited about putting the designs I've created in Illustrator and Photoshop into action. Unfortunately, I'm still learning how to do this effectively and it seemed better to get my work up online as quick as possible, hence my cargo collective account here.

The process is slow, but eventually mapsam.com will become a fully operating, interactive portfolio for my work. It's not on the back burner whatsoever, but I've found my semester courses, and work piling up in front of me and I need to start digging before it tumbles over.

Stay tuned for the full implementation. For now, here are some concept images of my ideas...

<description>The EDGE Project is a student organization I've been involved with for the past couple years. The main vision of the organization is the establish and evolve a model for international development that is sustainable but also provides a way for students to user their minds and education before the are out of the classroom.

As the Co-Director, I've been lucky to bring some beneficial upgrades to the organization including it's brand and visual identity. Below you will find an array of logos, posters, headers, and more that I've put together for the EDGE Project. Some are used constantly, while others haven't even made it to the organizations eye. Take a look at the blog where all of this design comes together.

Take a gander...

<description>The Pope Farm Park wanted a new map of their trail system that included the attractions and the locations along the way.

This map (recreated and rotated for its location within the park - a.k.a. multiple signs) was a bit of challenge. It first had to be legible in all types of weather; rain or shine, snow or sleet. That required the colors to be extra distinguishable for those wishing to follow a specific path.

The park is relatively small and has quite a few attractions within it, which made space issues something more complex than originally expected. After some work with the trail system colors and locator icons, the map turned out to be quite useful and is now the current main display map at the park.

<description>This series of nine greyscale maps was used for a history book dealing with Pre-colonial North America onward. The maps, made from scratch show information regarding location of trading posts, Native American settlements, and routes taken by armies and expeditions.

Since these maps were to be produced in greyscale, the hierarchy of labeling was to be more noticeable through size and typeface. The client's specifications were without any mention of typeface or style; these maps, despite their objective, were designed purely out of my personal specifications. Throughout production of the series, I had to ensure continuity but still make sure the maps had their own data displayed in a legible manner. The client was very pleased with how the maps look and my choices in design and extent.

Here's a few examples...

<description>I had this project come to me from a professor in the Geography Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The map was to show the addition of countries to the Bologna Process over time. Learn more about the Bologna Process/Accords here.

The maps purpose was for classroom learning and required a color scheme that would work for quick and easy relation to the legend. A multi-hue scheme was the best fit, and makes for a pretty good-looking map–especially for the classroom.
