Altered

Making Space co-curated, facilitated and managed 'Altered' at Christ Church Cathedral as part of National Music Day 2013. 'Altered' at Christ Church Cathedral celebrated the spirit of collaboration in music and performance, with a diverse, exciting but 'secret' line-up of inspired pairings and performances from Ireland. The project, a marriage between Christ Church Cathedral and Le Cool Magazine saw some of the finest, contemporary, Irish musicians play to a limited audience in both the nave and crypt of the almost 1,000 year old Dublin icon.

Artists Included: Jape, Come Along Live Long Nialler9 and White Collar Boy.
Venue: Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin 8. Ireland
Making Space at Kaph was an original space pop-up residence inside the coffee shop Kaph. Offering a space for artists to both work and interface with the public, it brought together the functional pleasure of drinking coffee with the more abstract pleasure of art appreciation - with the added bonus of having the artist present. The space offered four illustrators a residency in the loft above the café, showcasing them to a public that may not know them, and giving them a chance to produce art that was priced affordable at anything from €10 upwards. These residences successfully bridged the gap between the artist and the consumer and showcased the talents of the artists in an innovative way.
Venue: Kaph SC, Dublin 2. Ireland
The Institute of Designers in Ireland held the Annual Graduate Design Awards in the NCAD Gallery. This annual competition identifies the very best 3rd level graduate design work in Ireland. Making Space was invited to manage and curate this design exhibition and successfully showcased the diverse work, while utilising the large window space. The diverse range of materials and disciplines, meant that a dialogue had to be created between the objects which illustrated their importance, not just as a product but also as a crafted piece of artwork in itself.
Making Space collaborated with Hato Press, a risograph publisher from London, in an attempt to create a new way to communicate how spectacular Dublin City has become. Making Space chose to record and document Dublin, as seen through the eyes of its inhabitants, using twitter, storytelling and risograph printing. It combined photos of the city with crowd-sourced tweets about Dublin, to produce freely available posters in Temple Bar. This ‘tactile tweeting’, was an opportunity to push the boundaries and explore ways to engage with the diverse communities that visit Temple Bar through this unusual poster printing workshop.
This diverse group of creatives, united by the ethos of the exhibition, offered the viewer a number of different perspectives on the place of craftsmanship and type in our everyday lives.
Making Space took up residency for the second time at The Library Project in Temple Bar in November 2013. This space, which operates as a gallery, shop and a library was the perfect setting to explore the concept of a 'pop-up' residency and the work that can be created. Featuring work from designers, illustrators, craftspeople and photographers this all encompassing residency programme was both innovative and commercially successful. Making Space managed and curated each exhibition for each creative which gave them the opportunity to experiment with new work.
The aim of National Heritage Week is to build awareness and education about our heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation. Christ Church Cathedral played host to an exciting week of curated events featuring music that complimented the heritage of the building while encouraging contemporary participation. Making Space curated an exceptional and diverse programme of music that featured an intimate evening performance by Rónán Ó Snodaigh (Kíla) Ireland's greatest percussionist and a performance by 3epkano who joined forces with Iarla Ó Lionáird to perform a live score to the spine-tingling classic, Der Golem.

Artists Included: Rónán Ó Snodaigh (Kíla), 3epkano and Iarla Ó Lionáird.
Venue: Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin 8. Ireland
Date: August 2013
