'raju shakya, silver producer, was born in a poor 'newar' (one of the major tribal community) family in patan, nepal. he could not complete his high school study due to family's economical condition. at the age of 13 he learned jewelry making skills from his friend. he started working as an assistant jewelry maker, with very negligible wage. from 1993, he started working as jewelry producer on per piece work basis. due to unpopularity of the product and lack of orders the pay rate was very low. he was never able to get regular jobs, therefore his income was very low making his survival difficult. he marrried someone from the kumbeshwar techinal school staff in year 2001, and when his wife found out about his economical status she was surprised and shocked. his wife advised him to establish his own workshop in his tiny house and assured him to support financially. his wife came to the fair trade company to request for loan to establish the workshop and marketing support. the school management decided to support them and provided NPR 15,000 interest free loan. he started production from 2002 with marketing support. due to the support and orders from international fair trade buyers, their economical status and life are getting better. among his employees some are from the remote village of trisuli, nuwakot district in nepal and some are local poor people.' the first product raju made for me is a bracelet, handmade from recycled brass. it has the text 'home is where your heart is' on the inside, in my grandmother's handwriting: <img kept a diary, collected things, and recorded sounds. when I arrived back home, i started made small etchings about my trip. i noticed most of my work was about 'feeling at home'. what caught my attention was that i could feel at home in so many places. even if I was alone, eating an apple next to a glacier. all images shown are made after a place where i felt at home, somewhere between oslo
