This project involved the design of a "room" for a single person, with an interior size limit of 20 square meters. The room was to provide a place for sleeping, for reading, as well as a hearth.

The design for this room is comprised of 3 distinct spaces: an enclosed, private sleeping area on the ground level; a bright, open space for reading, painting, and practicing yoga; and a roof terrace that allows one to fully experience the view to the South.
As an intern at Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects in NYC, valuable experience was gained working as part of the design team for an addition to Princeton University's Science and Engineering quad: the Andlinger Center for Energy + the Environment.

Designed with great attention paid to the surrounding context of the Princeton University campus, the Andlinger Centre for Energy + the Environment will accelerate research on effective and sustainable solutions to problems of energy and the environment. Major areas of research will include improving energy efficiency and conservation; developing sustainable energy sources; and advancing carbon dioxide storage and sensing techniques.

The Andlinger Center will be the catalyst for the making of a new garden-quad where students and faculty will find interest and respite both inside and outside of the buildings, both inside and outside of their disciplines. The building itself will be designed as a model of sustainability both to reduce its impact on the environment and to teach students and the community about energy and environmental issues.

Proxima is a love story. Created for the second annual Make Fashion exhibition and working with engineers at the SAIT RADLab, we collaborated to create a physical manifestation of the ‘electricity’ produced between two lovers as they move closer to one another.

The seed of the idea for this year’s piece grew out of a desire to explore the concept of closeness, and how a garment might react to the presence of another person. Programmed to light up based on the proximity of RFID tags hidden within the male dancer’s costume, during the show the jacket lit up only in his presence. The closer he came to the female dancer, the more the lights sparkled. The jacket responds not only to proximity, but also directionality, so when the dancers faced each other, the front of Megan’s jacket lit up, and as she moved around Ben, the light would follow whichever part of her body was closest to his.

Proxima has been featured on Hackaday.com, RFID Journal, Make: Magazine and the Adafruit Blog.

For the Make Fashion Initiative, traditional embroidery techniques were combined with LED e-textile technology to explore ideas of light, movement and performance. The piece highlights the unique nature of wearable art and the connection that inevitably forms between the art and its wearer.

Designed with a dancer in mind and modified from a vintage 1960s pattern, the garment has been hand embroidered to showcase the technological system used, with accelerometers placed on the shoulders, hips and ribcage. While dancing, the body’s movements become (literally) highlighted with light.

In order to facilitate the easy explanation of the technology, all elements of the e-textile system have been placed on the exterior of the garment. The embroidery becomes at once didactic and decorative.

This garment was recently shown at CES 2014.
MakeFashion is an community-building initiative created in Calgary to showcase the vibrant and growing hacking/making culture that exists within the city, and to connect people with new ideas and technologies in an accessible and participatory format. Designers with little background in technology (and hackers with little background in design) collaborate to create unique works of wearable art that combine fashion and technology in a wide variety of mediums. The culmination of the project is a Wearable Art Show featuring the works produced.

As part of the 2011 Metropolis Next Generation Design Competition, an interdisciplinary team of planners and designers proposed an unconventional approach to bringing a 1960s federal building in Los Angeles to zero environmental impact.

The following is our proposition:

Our GSA building - characterized by a block-y shape and significant carbon emissions - has a large environmental footprint. Typically, the approach to reducing the environmental footprint considers how to improve the building’s performance, but this approach alone is not sufficient to reduce carbon emissions. A second dimension concerns how the building is used: a densely populated, interactive workplace can precipitate big reductions in the carbon emissions of the building.

Wasted space is not sustainable space. Current Federal space standards match industry standards, allotting users approximately 230 square feet - a generous standard compared to contemporary offices in the U.S. and Europe. Micro//Macro proposes a strategy for valuing space to influence building culture, the neighborhood, and the environmental footprint. We argue that (1) rethinking how people work and how to allocate space will lower the net environmental footprint while also enhancing community and flexibility of use; (2) renovating the cores of the building to bring light, natural ventilation, and a central promenade staircase into the structure will improve the quality of the experience and reduce energy consumption; (3) enhancing amenities on site will transform it to a hub of activity, encourage users to live locally, and strengthen the urban fabric; (4) the addition rooftop loft housing, oriented towards a new generation of champions for Downtown LA, will build a permanent element of community at the site.

We propose a new space standard for 85% of the offices: 130 ft2/person, designed in a flexible, open layout to enhance social interactions and collaboration. Moreover, efficient space standards create opportunities for new amenities in the other 15% - including an open atrium, daycare, fitness - plus outdoor programming, including a food truck plaza, farmers market, and rooftop housing - to serve building users and the broader urban community.

The Micro//Macro approach reflects the efficiency of agglomeration in cities: as cities grow more dense, carbon emissions grow at a lower rate. This per capita footprint benefit is significant - especially in a design context - but the real value of populated spaces is social energy and the exchange of ideas. Micro//Macro reflects this tension between designing for the qualitative and quantitative experience of the building, achieving interesting uses and efficiency of space.

These ideas are a transformational model for all 9,000+ GSA buildings of this type, rethinking space, light, ventilation, and uses across the greater GSA system. Extending the activity of the building outside the site to reach the urban community establishes a relationship between citizen and government and building to neighborhood.

Efficiency gains should be reinvested to reduce the environmental footprint across the GSA system. Savings from reduced energy costs should fund incentives for employees to reduce their vehicle miles traveled (VMT), by subsidizing public transit, carpooling, and supporting programs that strengthen the Downtown LA neighborhood. Second, the reclaimed space is an opportunity to impact other GSA buildings: flexible onsite living spaces could induce employees to work where they live and newly recovered space would allow the GSA to consolidate buildings across a given region.

As part of Professor Sergio Palleroni's longstanding BaSiC Initiative, students from across North America participated in a design/build program to create a new and much-needed Visitor Centre for the Druk White Lotus School in Ladakh, India, in partnership with ARUP Associates.

The Druk White Lotus School is a primary and secondary school under the patronage of the Dalai Lama, and founded in 1992. It sits high in the Indian Himalaya among one of the last remaining mountain societies where a traditional Tibetan Buddhist way of life still thrives. The school was started at the request of the Ladakhi people, who wanted a school that would help maintain their rich cultural traditions while equipping their children for life in the 21st Century.

For more information, visit our website

--

In the summer of 2010, students spent five weeks in the region collaborating with ARUP in the second phase of charrettes toward improving and preserving the life of the Ladakhi community at Druk White. It was determined that a Visitor Centre was a much-needed addition to the school, in order to educate guests on the workings of the school without disrupting the children's daily routines.

Upon entering the Visitor Centre, guests are greeted by a large corner window with a view to the Naropa Monastery and the spectacular mountain range surrounding the valley. A custom-made cabinet that draws upon traditional Ladakhi furniture styles acts as a semi-transparent partition between the entrance and the gallery space; which will hold Ladakhi artifacts, information on the school, and student artwork. Guests entering the gallery are greeted by the light of four skylights, which illuminate the hand-made mosaic inlayed into the floor. The back wall of the gallery is daylit using a "wash wall" technique in which an extruding, angled partition helps to bounce light far into the space.

In collaboration with fellow student and friend Hannah Newton, a collection of origami-inspired hand-made paper dresses were presented as part of the Nova Scotia College of Art + Design's 20th Annual Wearable Art Show.

To achieve specific effects, several different types of paper were used, including recycled cartridge, mylar (lasercut into an antique lace pattern), vellum, and cardstock. Each garment was inspired by a different persona, and crafted as such.

Located on a corner lot in the North End of Halifax, NS, the design for this community theatre explores the importance of public space and identity within a neighbourhood.

Paper folding was explored as a possibility for the interior acoustic paneling, but gradually became to inform the exterior form of the theatre as well. Giving the theatre such strong formal qualities allows it to become a beacon within the community, and imbue a strong sense of identity to what could become an important neighbourhood gathering place.

Nearly half of the site was left open as a public plaza, welcoming passers-by to partake in outdoor performances and movie screenings, classes, or perhaps to simply linger and watch the "theatre" of everyday life. In order to maximise this outdoor space, the seating for the interior theatre is cantilevered above the lobby, and in doing so also creates a shaded canopy under which theatre-goers can seek shelter.

This project examines the importance of daylighting in classroom settings, and uses several large (12ft. high) oculi to bring light into the learning spaces of a Montessori school in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Their shape and size produce interesting volumetric experiences both inside the school and on its roof terrace.

The goal for this project was to explore how daylight could become an integral element of the school design, with the desire to eliminate the need for artificial light while school is in session. The shape and direction of each "aperture" (the barnacle-like extrusions out of the roof) were carefully designed to emit a desirable amount - and type - of light.
The design's large roof allows all major building systems components to be located within it. A solar hot water heater is used as the main source of heat, with natural gas acting as a back-up. Ventilation is facilitated well by the oculi, and the four clustered over the central lunch hall create an opportunity to use passive heat recovery. Fresh air is pumped in by way of a fan, and passes directly past the hot air rising through the oculi, which would be clad in a thin, conductive metal.
