20 stitched drawings on mulberry paper, dimensions variable

Lost in thoughts or quietly absorbed meditation, these individuals look out, but do not engage with us; they are absent from the space they occupy. I attempt to capture them, through a slow process of deliberate labor. Despite my careful attempts, each one fails; these individuals are in their own psychological space, distant from my own contemplations.

installation to be completed May 2010 in Iowa City, IA

These photographs document children of the Iowa City Community sharing their experiences of the flood of 2008 with Sandbag Project. Starting in March of this year, more members of the Iowa City Community will be able to share their stories of the flood on collected sandbags. The sandbags, once filled by residents as barricades against destruction, will be transformed into a banner to be installed in Iowa City (at various locations including the Iowa City Public Library) in May and June 2010. The intention of Sandbag Project is to articulate multitudes of experiences and visually express the interdependency of people in a community.

If you are an Iowa City Resident: Sandbags will be available to be picked up and dropped off at the Fiction desk at the Iowa City Public Library in March. Please return your sandbag to the fiction desk by April 8, 2010 so it can be included in the project.

Fall 2008, installation, mixed media including: plaster, string, lights

Communion is about the violent desire to veil another’s face (for seeing the Other’s face requires a relationship.*) The viewer is confronted by a multitude of hands, but no faces, keeping safe from losing one’s self or breaching one’s own totality. The piece is about the complexities of wanting to hold on to one’s self, among other things, and, inversely, about our inability to give enough of ourselves without being lost.

Fall 2009. Installation with audio component and selected works from the Pistils, Adobe Books, San Francisco, 9’ x 11” x 8”

Conversations in the Parlor consists of two nearly identical parlors which face one another through a glass entrance. This salon style exhibition, installed in Adobe Books in San Francisco, invites the public to sit, read, and converse. The first use of the spelling parlor (c.1225), deriving from the Old French word parler (to speak), referenced windows through which confessions were made. These parlors, installed in this particular bookstore, with its diurnal and nocturnal communities, uniquely showcase the tensions exhibited in this place. The Parlor will rejuvenate the history of specialized rooms for conversation, as well as reveal the chaotic nature of misunderstanding worlds coexisting in the same space.

Fall 2009. performance, Swell Gallery, San Francisco, 9’ x 11” x 8”

Project Project was both a performance and a sculpture exhibited in Matter of Course, curated by Cathy Fairbanks and Laura Boles Faw. Project Project facilitated the modification and interaction of different components in the obstacle course by adding words and images, and changing meanings, shadows and illuminations. Viewers/participants in the course crossed through the projections they or others created, further altering the piece. Temporary projections created sculptures through shadow and moving illumination that dynamically interacted with both participants and other pieces in the course. Project Project suggests flexibility, shifting interpretations, and resists static understandings.

Spring 2007. mixed media including: muslin, paper, cheesecloth, plaster, wax, blood, paper, glass, rubber bands, thread, rose petals, baby formula, tears, pills, white corn, dirt, various dimensions

Meditation on Sanctity is an imagining of the sacred from a contemporary feminist theological perspective. This artwork began as a response to oppression perpetuated by some traditional religious structures and has evolved into a meditation on the universality and sanctity of the human body. Within the body unveiled, systems and structures are exposed as interwoven. Each reliquary, in the form of a body part, reveals a specific everyday struggle facing the women of Latin America and the United States. As each reliquary in the project is a part of the whole (body), so too are the relics presented within each vessel connected. AIDS, hunger, pollution, over stimulation, and poverty are intertwined. These realities are exposed as interwoven within multiple systems and structures, both physically and metaphorically. These reliquaries place the conflicts and struggles of the everyday directly into a sacred realm, indicating a starting point for art making and ethical living.

April 2006, 20 plaster statues of the Virgin Mary, stained glass, 9” x 24” x 11”

Exchanging Icons was an interactive installation with many identical, small statues of the Virgin Mary. Participants were invited to take a statue and leave one of their own sacred objects. Thinking about the necessity of the viewer/possessor to endow an icon with significance led me to investigate how exchanging iconic objects might change the meaning behind an icon. This inspired further explorations into how the aura of a sacred space can be created with reproduced or common objects.

Fall 2006. mixed media including roses, cloth, thread, seashells, contraceptives, 9’ x 11” x 8”

Re-imagining the Divine stemmed from an interest in sacred spaces and ritual, and my horror at the histories oppression perpetuated by traditional religious structures. Sifting through many identities of divine feminine figures, such as the Virgin Mary, Tonantzin, Earth Goddess, culminated in tension between these histories and the contemporary moment. The resulting piece, a reliquary in the form of a portal/womb/vagina, consists of roses, seashells, thread, and contraceptives, and both liberates and gives form to the intimate relationship between sexual empowerment and divinity.
