Artist's book made from rabbit fur, cut photographs, mat board, Bristol board, and rice paper. The accordion pages of Confliction fold out to reveal eight different portraits, two for every member of my 4-person family. Each portrait is comprised of a different photograph that I have taken, and for every family member the two photos chosen represent the opposite side of a significant struggle within his/her own life. Each face is "revealed" from its corresponding background by cutting out the negative space present in each visage. The book can be viewed in multiple ways. If viewed in L to R page-by-page format, the faces build a deep, complex mesh via the stacking of their multiple layers. If folded out like an accordion, each face can be viewed individually, making the defining details of each person more apparent. Together, these two different views remind the viewer of how families are simultaneously both a collection of individuals and an entrenched, biologically-linked unit that forms a whole. Conceptual work executed through the combined used of Matlab, Illustrator, and Digital Output. The computer is capable of completing actions the artist would never be able to achieve on his/her own – an example of which is the segmentation of forms and colors, demonstrated in this series. In the past several years blogging has become incredibly popular. One specific blog genre focuses on presenting contemporary and up-and-coming work from a variety of artists and photographers. As viewership of an individual blog grows, so too does its influence on both the careers of the artists it features and other sites that serve a similar purpose. I envision this process as a form of curation, whereby the selection tastes of one influential blog owner perpetrate the aesthetic tastes of other blog operators. Perhaps without consciously realizing it, these different blog owners are actually affecting what is now popular in art. Consequentially, by the sheer popularity of their sites and connections to each other, they also perpetuate the exact same artist and artistic styles over and over. My goal was break down the hue in various images to potentially reveal color biases or posting patterns within different blogs and their operators. I fixed and modified a MATLAB free-source code created by Jonathan Michelson at Stanford University called C3, the colorblind color checker. The program segments an image into 24 different colors based on the sRGB profile of the Macbeth color scale. It then outputs where the color is within the image and what percentage of the total image is represented by that color. I analyzed the color breakdown of 50 subsequent posts from the following four blogs, one of which is my own. Each line represents a different post featuring a visual artist, with the most recent images at the top.
