DownCity Design is a non-profit design organization dedicated to improving civic life while offering inquiry-based, experiential learning opportunities. We are committed to giving citizens of all ages the tools and knowledge to be agents of positive change in their communities by improving the built environment. Through education, design, and an active dialogue with community members and stakeholders, we bring the tools of architecture and design to under-served populations.

I have taught both high school and middle school studios, building an outdoor community garden classroom and a greenhouse respectively. These built projects will serve not only as educational exercises for our students, but will also be utilized by various community organizations as a site for future community workshops. Working with a co-instructor, we wrote all of our curriculum and relied heavily upon alternate funding sources and community partnerships in response to budget constraints. In addition, we are currently documenting this current semester in hopes of creating open source lesson plans so that this project may be easily adapted to fit other schools/programs.

&#60;img src="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/5/191920/2874682/DSCN0024_500.JPG" width="500" height="375" width_o="500" height_o="375" src_o="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/5/191920/2874682/DSCN0024_500_o.JPG" data-mid="15168011"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The middle school program has stretched through two consecutive semesters, beginning with lessons on plant growth/needs and solar orientation, moving through the design and construction of individual greenhouses and culminating in the building of a large scale greenhouse on the school grounds. This finished product is an amalgamation of students ideas and design. It is also the end result of meeting with classroom teachers who have fully backed the projects and agreed to write it into their daytime science, math and English curriculum.

		<description>Mercy Brown and the Devil's Footprint from Jacob Richman on Vimeo.
A part-roving, part-stationary mixed-genre performance created by Awesome Collective and inspired by Michael Bell's account of two famed Rhode Island folktales. Caroline Doherty and Adara Meyers wrote the script for the roving element (the Devil's Footprint tale). Stationary scenes representing the Mercy Brown vampire tale were created -- via live music, puppetry, and dance -- by Kirsten Volness, Jacob Richman, Jennifer Vincent, Ron Lewis, and Alix Witthoft. I was responsible for writing, directing and scoring the puppet scene (14:00-19:00) depicting the exhumation of Mercy Brown's body, as well as the playbill design (below).

In the summer of 2012 summer, I led the Groundwork Providence GreenTeam in completing three community interventions, addressing each of the following local environmental issues: brownfield remediation and natural habitat creation, storm water runoff and depaving, and waste reduction. These interventions are small pilot projects (bat houses, depaving and phytoremediation, and recycling data visualization) that serve not only to make a direct environmental impact, but also to raise awareness of the issues at hand. Each project has taken on a word of the phrase “It’s Our Choice”, referring to the decisions we make each day and their impact on our surroundings. This phrase has now been etched into the sky and ground at sites throughout the city of Providence.

&#60;img src="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/5/191920/2701375/Poster.jpg" width="670" height="684" width_o="1800" height_o="1838" src_o="http://payload20.cargocollective.com/1/5/191920/2701375/Poster_o.jpg" data-mid="21645671"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Light boxes were constructed for installation at Roger Williams National Memorial. These boxes call attention to the student work, but as our work is eventually replaced with that of local artists and environmental activists, they will also serve as a curated space for public art/activism.

Working with the students, we created informational pamphlets that would further explain the environmental issues to which we were responding.

		<description>Shop to School - Due to the dynamic nature of the program (from tool intensive open shop times to educational classes as well as seasonal changes in work flow) and strict limitations of both an undersized budget and space, it was quickly realized that this project would be a test in optimization. Working within the above constraints, my partner and I designed a shelving system that opens up during shop time for full tool access and is dimensioned to work with storage containers currently being used by Recycle-A-Bike. When not in use, the moveable work carts (seen at the right) can be stored along the expanded south wall thereby concealing both tools and storage and creating a clean facade and open space for instruction. A raised floor in the rear of the space not only conceals an undulating existing floor surface, but it clearly designates an administrative area and provides additional needed storage space below.
(built photos coming soon)

A simple conversion from a five car garage to a two bedroom guest house, this project quickly found itself responding to the existing plan while working within the limitations of available space. The shift in plan became mirrored in section, distinguishing the bedrooms from the more open living space and kitchen. A planter along the side of the house also calls attention to this shift and protects the entrance from driveway in front. A wall separating the spaces was built to house storage and all utilities yet it does not extend to the ceiling, lengthening the main space below. The bathroom is enclosed with a band of glazing set back from the dividing wall, keeping the space isolated while a skylight illuminates the area from above.

		<description>Apartment Renovation - After researching the history and construction of an existing house in Providence, three other students and I worked on an intelligent renovation scheme. Our final design maximized heating efficiency through the use of radiant wall heating and a spiraling heat flow diagram which would allow warmed air to rise and be contained at the level of the inhabitant. This design also included the sliding back of two floor sections to create double height spaces. These spaces facilitated a social connection from one floor to another, allowed heat to travel throughout the spaces, and also revealed existing structural elements. All interior details held true to this idea of joined spaces as baseboards, window trim, and railings were set flush to the surface of the wall.

		<description>After the creation of a tectonic system based on calculated notching and weaving I explored the limits of this system to create enclosure, elevation change, opening, surface. Ideas of movement through the city led to the basic flowing form of the structure, and the carving away of existing ground. Interior spaces house individual county models and limit view to corresponding areas of the city while an open central courtyard lifts the traveler above the walls and provides an uninterrupted view of the city.

		<description>Kolkata Housing- Working directly with New Light, a nonprofit charitable trust in India, and alongside four other students, I helped design an incremental housing proposal for a long standing red light district in Kolkata, India. Given the nature of the residents’ livelihoods and the precarious social and political position they occupy, the goal was to create more healthful living conditions for the residents of the neighborhood while causing the least disruption of the patterns of living and working within the district. Rather than challenging the power structure that owns and operates the sex trade within Kalighat, we are responding to an immediate and urgent need for improved, healthful living conditions for the sex workers and their families.

		<description>Community Collaborative - As one of 29 students to travel to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, I helped design and construct six sets of covered bleachers for a local soccer field using locally grown and harvested bamboo. In addition we constructed a separate pavilion that could be defined as a community space and used as directed by members of the local community. Participation in all areas of the design process and construction was encouraged from preliminary sketches, to scale models and mock-ups. Knowledge of local systems of operation, from material purchasing and quality control, to obtaining land permissions through public forum presentations became the most challenging aspects of the project. However, negotiation of these difficulties however led to a stronger tie to the community and a shared sense of responsibility toward the finished work.

		<description>A togetherness between two people is an impossibility, and where it seems, nevertheless, to exist, it is a narrowing, a reciprocal agreement which robs either one party or both of his fullest freedom and development. But, once the realization is accepted that even between the closest human beings infinite distances continue to exist, a wonderful living side by side can grow up, if they succeed in loving the distance between them which makes it possible for each to see the other whole and against a wide sky!

With The Infinite Space Between, we turned the UT Visual Arts Center into a new form of musical instrument that uses live musicians, dancers, motion tracking technology and live media processing to connect various rooms in the structure into a single, unified performance tool. Experimenting with this instrument, whether lingering in a stairway to sing or moving closer to a stranger to affect sound, can change the way one engages with his or her built environment, heightening awareness of the spatial relationships as well as the human interactions therein. Furthermore, composing for this instrument requires a different form of writing and thus necessitates thinking about music from a spatial perspective, shifting both the creative process as well as the resulting work.
