"He swung his right foot around the ball. The opponent leaned to the right. He swung his left foot around the ball. The opponent leaned to the left. The clock stopped to watch his moves. Everyone moved in slow motion. Kadar kept faking out the opponent, until he made his move and scored!" Everyone fell over laughing. Kadar is one of the new players on the field and the youngest so he is the player everyone picks on. He laughed and smiled and got up to play again. Everyone is laughing at half time, which means the Africans are winning. It was quiet and beautiful and the perfect way to learn something new. I talked to my sisters and my parents and my dad sang happy birthday to me in Danish and then sent me a video about Danish birthdays. It reminded him of one of when his fellow students woke him up on September 17, 1973 to celebrate his birthday. I started to cook Yassa, a lemon and onion and chicken sauce, but half way through it, I got scared that it wouldn't turn out and put in some curry and cayenne pepper and maggi cubes and fried the chicken. Banana bread was put in the oven and seafood stew was warmed up. Binti followed Pirate around the whole night, as Pirate tried to escape under the table and behind the bookshelf and around the kitchen. Salifou and Mory and Kemo talked about the state of Guinea and who and what it needs to succeed. Kemo was arguing for professionals that had experience and Mory was arguing for people who were passionate about the country and the conversation continued the whole night and will probably continue on for the whole spring. They offered it as a language class one semester and while I stumbled on in French 4, the ASL students quickly became fluent and conversed in the hallways amongst each other. Today, 13 years later, I walked into a class in the basement of the community center and found an empty chair and listened to our teacher begin to describe the language and the culture and the world of sign language. We learned words like "nice" and "happy" and "you" and "mine" and began paying closer attention to our bodies and our hands. I can't wait for the next class.
