The Becoming-Cloud Suit is an inflatable sculpture that enables an individual to experience the levitation, contemplation, and other qualities of cloud-ness.

This piece is part of the Envirotouchers series, a collaboration with Tracy Featherstone.

Why do I move through my environment in isolation when it is so obviously alive, breathing and reaching out to touch me? When there seem to be such intense opportunities for exchange and interpenetration? I walk down the sidewalk and find the branch of a tree gingerly grazing my cheek. A lamppost runs its light over my skin. What happens if I return the caress?

The Envirotouchers are our response to these questions. They are series of prototypes for a more connected world, Often, we get stuck in a relationship-rut with our environment, wearing down the same path to work and back or ignoring the (arguably) tender call of a car alarm. Envirotouchers are a series of actions and wearable sculptures that offer a simple and playful solution to this. Through them we can create new, experimental relationships with our environment; we can dig in, collect, absorb, float, lick, snuggle and ultimately instigate our own actions to build a personalized and meaningful connection to the world around us. Through these new connections we are doing nothing less than re-imagining our environments, and with them, our selves.

Supported in part by the University of Miami, Ohio and Anderson Ranch Art Center.

Instructions PDF

The Parking Line Drawing requires its participants to interact with an often-overlooked part of their everyday environment. Individuals align their body with a parking lot line and absorb both the trials and the joys of a line that is bound to a singular place and two-dimensional plane. After this bonding, individuals armed with new insight into parking lines and their feelings, can use their bodies to extend the line, thereby fulfilling its once-impossible desires. For instance, they might alllow the line to stretch, reflect the sky by tracing clouds, or make a declaration of love to a secret crush.

This piece is part of the Envirotouchers series, a collaboration with Tracy Featherstone.

Scenes from a Line is a collaboration done with Thomas Feulmer

It is also a collaboration with you. You can create enact your own scenes with the simplest of materials. All you need is the following:
1. printer
2. tape
3. empty wall and floor space
4. friend/partner/co-worker (optional)

Directions:
Download and print "horizon line" pdf. This may be printed in either color or black and white, depending on your options and your preferences.

Horizon Line PDF

Find an appropriate space on your home or office wall to hang your horizon line. The bottom of your horizon line should be no higher than 12 inches from the floor. Also, be sure to choose a space that has empty floor area in front of it. Lie on your stomach on the floor in front of the horizon, and gaze out over the landscape.

Think about compression and lines.

Optional: Invite your friend/partner/co-worker to participate in Scenes for a Line with you. Have them lie on top or underneath you to create another stacked landscape mirroring your horizon line. If you enjoy this - think about inviting different people throughout the day to lie on top of you and join you in your horizontal gazing.

The Rootpack enables its wearer to grow into and transmit and/or absorb molecules from his or her environment. The extra connection and nutrition boosts the wearer’s functionality and sensitivity to the selected surroundings. Takes up to 3 hours.

Supported in part by the University of Miami, Ohio and Anderson Ranch Art Center.</description>

2005-2007 Director of the Digital Media and Photography Program
Anderson Ranch Art Center is a world-renowned artist residency and workshop program located outside of Aspen in Snowmass Village, Co. As program director I was brought in to develop the new digital media program while maintaining the quality and reputation of the existing photography program.

To build the digital media program I created a curriculum which included classes in animation, video, interactive installation, web-based art, computational art and physical computing. I was able to recruit an exceptional faculty to teach these workshops including: Jim Campbell, Camille Utterback, Joshua Davis and Martin Venezky, among many others. I also expanded Anderson Ranch's reputation in the digital media arts and design worlds through a coordinated marketing program.

To bring new rigor into the photography program I offered classes in critical studies and organized classes around topical or conceptual issues. I also worked with the wood and painting programs to develop cross-disciplinary classes, such as a class with Chan-Schatz that allowed painters to explore animating techniques in their work or a class with Lucy Pulls that explored digital printing on fabric to create installations.
