		<description>Written by Jolby and Rachel Roellke
Illustrated by Jolby
10" x 10" 42 page hardcover book
54 color illustrations

This utterly charming tale relates the story of King Mortimer, a royal plagued by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder who only finds comfort and ease by surrounding himself with the number 5 — be it 5 knights, 5 moats or 5 points on his crown.

One day he awakens to find that he has grown a sixth finger! Woe is he! His wizard is quick to suggest a remedy, but not one without risk. In a state of crisis, he takes advice from far and wide on how to achieve this cure. In turn, a jester, a gypsy, a professor and others present plans increasingly unlikely and complex. Driven to despair, epiphany is at last reached — perhaps his condition is not half so bad...

Beautifully illustrated in full color and with wonderful rhyming verse, The King's 6th Finger will appeal to all ages.

The first, softcover edition of this book was made possible by generous donations from friends, family, and other supporters on www.kickstarter.com

		<description>In order to expand on the story, we created these fine art giclee prints (a fancy term for "a really nice print"). This allowed us to expand some smaller stories within the book and for us to make a few small illustrations into larger images.
You can browse all of these prints from the book on our online store by clicking here.

		<description>&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/75523/918342/JolbsRach_860.jpg" width="860" height="430" width_o="960" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/75523/918342/JolbsRach_o.jpg" data-mid="4428862"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Jolby, a Portland based design and illustration team, just released their new children’s book titled “The King’s 6th Finger,” which they co-authored with local writer Rachel Roellke. This is no ordinary book. With mid-century-inspired illustrations and a whimsical rhyme pattern, “The King’s 6th Finger” is a fresh approach to children’s literature. To top it off, the story has an important lesson about balance in everyday life.

“The King in our story, Mortimer, is obsessed with the number 5. He has to have everything in fives, even his moats and the hairs on his head. One day he wakes up and has grown a 6th finger, and all hell breaks loose,” says Colby Nichols, one half of the Jolby studio. “He eventually figures out that he needs to adapt to his new finger. Our original ending was much different, but we thought it would be better if Morty just let go a little bit.”

Jolby (the single brain that inhabits both Colby Nichols and Josh Kenyon) has been producing quirky, thoughtful illustration and design since 2005; from band artwork to clothing to full art shows. Nichols had the stroke of inspiration for a short poem about this wacky king years ago, but only recently started fleshing out the illustrations for the story. Since this book is Jolby’s first crack at children’s literature, they turned to their friend, local teacher and writer Rachel Roellke, for literary guidance.

The trio was able to print and self-publish the book with the help of the ingenious website, Kickstarter. Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects that allows donors to receive special gifts based on their donation amount. A few of their rewards included a personalized rhymed dedication by Rachel in the front of your book, your name printed in the back of the book on a special “Thank You” page, and even being drawn into the book itself. Kickstarter helps projects such as “The King’s 6th Finger” get off the ground without having the initial capital for production. With the help of over 140 generous donors, the book was printed and has been released. “Our goal was to raise $6000, but with our grass roots efforts through Facebook, Twitter, and blogs, we were able to promote the project and raise $8000 which allowed us to double our print run.” says Colby. They estimate roughly sixty-percent of donators were friends and family while the remaining fourty-percent were from their fans and strangers. “We raised $3,000 in under 4 days of posting the project to Kickstarter and completed our goal in 20 days.”

To keep their backers connected to the book and to keep interest high, Jolby &#38; Rachel gave donors weekly exclusive updates through that landed in their inbox which included: behind the scenes process photos, videos of making the book, sneak peeks of finished artwork, general updates on the status of the book and anything else to keep them updated on their investment. This encouraged current backers of the project to spread the word and kept the excitement level of the project high.

The trio have expanded on the story by producing limited edition giclée prints of artwork from and inspired by the book. Josh says “This has allowed us to take the story of our King beyond what’s finished and let’s us tell a smaller tale about particular characters.” These prints and the book will be on exhibition in Portland, OR starting at the end of January at Together Gallery. There will also be framed original artwork from the makings of the book and more.

In 2011, Gingko Press picked up the book to publish in hardcover and is currently available everywhere in the US.</description>
