This piece is an abstract illustration of the darkness illustrated in the coloring and iridescence of the Blue Morpho butterfly. The mood of this piece was very important as was the shapes and colors found in the garment. I wanted the blue and black colors to be apparent in this garment. I was interested in exploring the butterflies iridescence and contrasting blue and black color. To capture this I used lights. Within the skirt there are lights which creates a blue color in the garment connecting the color choices directly to my inspiration. To create this glow lights were positioned to reflect onto the silver vinyl and back out to the viewer. To connect the bodice of the garment to the skirt similar cut-outs were used, but without the light effects. Shapes in the garment tie back to the butterfly as well. The cut outs on the skirt were designed by looking and studying butterfly wing patterns. This is also true of the cut-outs on the collar. The shape of butterflies wings can be found when looking at the side view of the garment as well as in the overall shape of the collar. The back bodice is modeled after the overall shape of a butterfly. The skirt shape was created to reflect the shape and curve of wings. This garment is not a butterfly but instead the essence of it.

A collection of drawings that are variations of human faces.

As humans we readily recognize faces in even the most obscure things. As an artist I am fascinated by this phenomena. I wanted to explore the human face in many styles from realistic to abstract continuing until almost unrecognizable. Some faces are real people others come from my imagination.</description>

Design Challenge:

Design Statement

There are many types of evil that can be found in fairytales. In Cinderella the ugly step sister is a particular brand of darkness. In the Grimm’s version she cuts off parts of her feet to fit into her shoes and in the end is punished by having crows peck out her eyes. I wanted to explore her character in depth and convey her inner complexity in my garment. I drew inspiration from the cause and end result of her character throughout the fairytale. I also took visual inspiration from crows, which gave the garment its inky blue and black color.
The ugly step sister is a layered character, but very shallow. She tries to show the world a picture perfect image of herself as the perfect future princess. In my garment I tried to convey her shallow outer image through use of a shear layer made of up-cycled embroidered chiffon. This sheer layer utilizes sequins and beading because she often hides behind her wealth. It is sheer because it is not hard to see her true nature through her "mask". Her true nature is twisted and evil. She is ruled by her jealousy and nurtured by her mothers own evil soul. In my garment I conveyed this through an under-layer made of up- cycled t-shirts dyed dark blue-black. I want the pieces to lack uniformity in shape, but to twist and turn like her soul, the reason for her punishment.
The final piece of this garment is her shoulder-piece with connecting gloves. This final piece represents the result of her lies and jealous nature. The feathers and sharp shape of the shoulder piece represents the crows swirling in preparing to peck out her eyes.
