		<description>The animations on this page demonstrate the support offered by RenderMan for level-of-detail (LOD). Two models of a short length of Spanish Moss (Tillandsia Usneoides) were made in Maya. Using LOD, the renderer selects the appropriate model to render based on the area of screen space occupied by the model.

Final Render

Reference Images

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/23214/578209/reference_images.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="385" width_o="690" height_o="397" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/23214/578209/reference_images_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

First, a model is created with curves in Maya, then a nurbs model is created by extruding along the curves to ensure the shapes are exactly the same. Below is a video showing the two models along with a third high resolution model shaded with the default shading group.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/23214/578209/lowtohigh_transition-copy.png" border="0" width="648" height="365" width_o="648" height_o="365" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/23214/578209/lowtohigh_transition-copy_o.png" align="left" /&#62;

The transition between the two models was created with a short script that defines a detail range based on the position of the camera to the object. The transition is made between the nurbs model and the curves model where the moss begins to turn from red to blue.

Proxy Geometry Playblast

A shader was created to realistically replicate the fuzzy texture on the edge of the moss. A samplerInfo node is used to sample each piece of geometry to see if it is facing the camera. With the output of the facingratio of this node into the Ucords of a ramp, the shader will be blended from side to side with a dark center.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/23214/578209/mossshader.jpg" border="0" width="422" height="376" width_o="422" height_o="376" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/23214/578209/mossshader_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; </description>
