Let me tell you some things about being friends with Ryan North.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/interview2.jpg" width="604" height="453" width_o="604" height_o="453" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/interview2_o.jpg" data-mid="5905552" border="0" align="left"/> 1. This is a picture from one of my book launches. On the right you can see my friend Ryan interviewing me about horror movies and things that we like. It is scary being up on stage in front of people, but Ryan agreed to do it because he is a pal! You will notice that he is wearing a shirt in this photo. This is unusual.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/ryaninterview.jpg" width="670" height="547" width_o="720" height_o="588" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/ryaninterview_o.jpg" data-mid="5905608" border="0" align="left"/> 2. This is a picture from Ryan's book launch! I am interviewing him this time! I thought for sure it would make us even on the friend score, but then after this interview he gave me a hug, and he said, "I appreciate our friendship." How can I compete with that? I also interviewed him one time on the internet, too. Have you ever tried interviewing your friends? You should!

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/shirtless.jpg" width="604" height="453" width_o="604" height_o="453" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/shirtless_o.jpg" data-mid="5905645" border="0" align="left"/> 3. Sometimes Ryan and I hang out with other friends too. I know that seems like it wouldn't be as good, but when your other friend is John Campbell it is sometimes even better! It's crazy. We went to the fair and Ryan had so much fun his shirt popped open.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/shirtless2.jpg" width="604" height="453" width_o="604" height_o="453" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/shirtless2_o.jpg" data-mid="5905669" border="0" align="left"/> 4. And then it flew right off! John must have felt bad for him, so he pulled his own shirt up. I didn't know what to do. Things were getting awkward! So I said, "have you guys ever ridden on a foot massager?"

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/footmassagers.jpg" width="604" height="453" width_o="604" height_o="453" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/footmassagers_o.jpg" data-mid="5905803" border="0" align="left"/> 5. Luckily there were enough foot massagers for everyone! Ryan got his shirt back on, mostly, and so the security guards said we didn't have to pay the fine. That's what it is like to go to the fair with Ryan.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/thirsty.jpg" width="604" height="453" width_o="604" height_o="453" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/thirsty_o.jpg" data-mid="5905820" border="0" align="left"/> 6. Sometimes Ryan gets thirsty and he needs a friend to help him get something to drink. Here he is at a party, and I am helping him drink a premixed mojito. Normally he drinks coolers. But big manly coolers. And his tongue turns red! One time, me and Ryan had a rap battle

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/lemmitellya.jpg" width="546" height="353" width_o="546" height_o="353" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/lemmitellya_o.jpg" data-mid="5905853" border="0" align="left"/> 7. After I helped him drink a bunch of those mojitos, I put a tiara on his head and he went to sleep at the table. Being friends with Ryan is like having a 15 foot tall Barbie Doll.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/goodnight.jpg" width="604" height="452" width_o="604" height_o="452" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1223104/goodnight_o.jpg" data-mid="5905967" border="0" align="left"/> 8. I wrote a poem for my friend Ryan. He does a comic about dinosaurs. That is important to know, or this poem just seems silly. Also, he is married to Jenn who is also my friend! But does Jenn know about this photo? (Yes.)

Do you want to hear the poem?

Ryan,
Our love is a love that never dies,
Our love is the prettiest tie that ties,
Our love is a dinosaur that tries and tries,
and tries and tries and tries and tries.

If you ever get a chance, you should play pinball with your mom.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1342826/matahari1.jpg" width="670" height="893" width_o="1536" height_o="2048" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1342826/matahari1_o.jpg" data-mid="6524508" border="0" align="left"/>

This is the Bally Mata Hari pinball machine. It belongs to my mom. She used to play it all the time, in the 70s. She has been looking for one of the machines for years now, and finally found one last winter. There's a real physical pleasure to pinball machines. They're so mechanical! So loud and flashing and clanging and durable. They really are machines.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1342826/mom201103.jpg" width="670" height="893" width_o="1536" height_o="2048" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1342826/mom201103_o.jpg" data-mid="6524511" border="0" align="left"/>

This is my mom. She looks very proper and polite here, but you should see her play that pinball machine, man. She's the best pinball player I've ever seen. She slams it with her hip at just the right time. Pounds on the side. She insists that it's haunted, and then a moment later that there are magnets hidden in it.

On an average turn, I'm lucky if I get 30,000 points. My mother, meanwhile, is breaking 150K easily, every ball. Though, of course, there is an element of luck to it occasionally. "Look!" she says, when the ball slides just out of reach of the paddle. "There are fucking magnets in here, man. I'm telling you."

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1342826/mata1.jpg" width="480" height="640" width_o="480" height_o="640" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1342826/mata1_o.jpg" data-mid="6524639" border="0" align="left"/>

She loses another ball, and says, "You have to treat her right. She's fickle. You have to give her a little sugar." And then she rubs the mata hari picture on its tits and laughs.

My mom tells me that she has a new theory. She says that she thinks animals are angels. "Everyone thinks angels are just human beings with wings, or something like that," she says. "But I think they're animals. I think animals are our true test on this earth. The way we treat animals is our true measure."

A second later she's laughing and hip checking the machine, yelling, "You fucking bitch! You bitch!" And she tells me, "You can't say that in the arcade though. They'll kick you out. FYI."

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1342826/mom201106.jpg" width="670" height="893" width_o="1536" height_o="2048" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1342826/mom201106_o.jpg" data-mid="6524719" border="0" align="left"/>

This is Casey, and he's just about the most gentle dog in the world. He's a rescue. A couple months ago, I made a donation to a woman's shelter in Toronto, in my mother's name. She's had domestic violence in her life, and I wanted to do something for her. When I told her I'd made a donation to a charity in her name, she got very excited. "To an animal shelter?" she wanted to know.

And if I'd really been thinking about my mother, that's the donation I should have made. When I was growing up, I used to tease her a bit, because she was always saying things about she could talk to animals, about how she's a witch. It seemed a bit kooky to me, and sort of embarrassing. But now, I don't know. I'm not so sure she's wrong.

I'm not saying I believe in magic. But maybe my mother appreciates nature and animals in a way that there aren't really words for. Science can describe the natural world, but doesn't really do justice to the way we can love it. Or the way it can affect us. My mother lives her life as though animals really are angels, and that doesn't seem like a bad way to live. And while I was rolling my eyes at her as a teenager, I was also learning from her how important it is to respect the world around me.

She is nice to everyone she meets. Cashiers, waiters, taxi drivers. She always has a smile. Have you ever tried spending just a day doing that? It's such a nice feeling. I wish I could be more like my mother.

Don't get me wrong, she's still crazy.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1342826/mom201112.jpg" width="670" height="893" width_o="1536" height_o="2048" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/1342826/mom201112_o.jpg" data-mid="6524795" border="0" align="left"/>

And there is a slight possibility that I learned how to be a weirdo from her.

My friend Maggie Dort is the most beautiful, toughest, weirdest person I know. She is now training to be a fireman, but she is or has also been a Roller Derby MVP, a conservation scientist, a skateboarder, a writer, and a rioter. She's pretty great, me Dort is. Pretty great!

<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/dangerous.jpg" width="604" height="453" width_o="604" height_o="453" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/dangerous_o.jpg" data-mid="14335327" border="0" align="left"/>

Maggie and I dated for years, and it was like if the guy your dad warned you about was dating the girl your mom was worried you might turn out to be. You've never met a sketchier pair of weirdo dorks in your life. Oh hello, what's your name? Hey. We asked you a question. When do you get off work? Want to go climb up on rooftops with us? What does your hair taste like?

<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/adorbs.jpg" width="400" height="297" width_o="400" height_o="297" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/adorbs_o.jpg" data-mid="14335502" border="0" align="left"/>

But then, the reason we wouldn't call you back the next day? We were too busy holding hands and skateboarding! We were too busy learning new things together.

<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/skatedown.jpg" width="604" height="453" width_o="604" height_o="453" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/skatedown_o.jpg" data-mid="14335551" border="0" align="left"/>

And endangering our lives for fun!

<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/maniac.jpg" width="300" height="394" width_o="300" height_o="394" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/maniac_o.jpg" data-mid="14335568" border="0" align="left"/>

But this is not about me and me Dort, this is about Maggie! She just gets more and more awesome, the longer I know her. Even as I write this, she is probably sliding down a fireman pole with a big maniac grin on her face. She is probably catcalling at women in slinky dresses from the back of the firetruck.

<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/awww.jpg" width="604" height="404" width_o="604" height_o="404" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/awww_o.jpg" data-mid="14335673" border="0" align="left"/>

Her roller derby name was Land Shark, and if you see her on the street you should probably not approach her. I'm not kidding. She knocks down bitches for fun. She knocks down bitches like she's ringing a bell. She doesn't love sport, she loves blood. She loves confusion and violence. She is like the platonic ideal of chaos.

<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/pretty.jpg" width="670" height="448" width_o="720" height_o="482" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/pretty_o.jpg" data-mid="14335786" border="0" align="left"/>

She doesn't fuck around, is what I'm saying.

<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/homp.jpg" width="453" height="604" width_o="453" height_o="604" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/homp_o.jpg" data-mid="14335795" border="0" align="left"/>

Except, of course, that she totally does fuck around. She's like a big goofy kid. She gets soft in the head for anything fluffy! SO FLUFFY! She has a heart full of fluffy love!

<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/keeponliving.jpg" width="604" height="453" width_o="604" height_o="453" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/keeponliving_o.jpg" data-mid="14335876" border="0" align="left"/>

I have an IQ around 150 and she regularly makes me feel dumb. But not dumb like I'm not intelligent, dumb like I'm lazy in my thinking - like I'm better than I'm acting. She sees things with a clarity that is often a bit shocking. She's the only person I know who got kicked out of a private school.

<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/really.jpg" width="604" height="402" width_o="604" height_o="402" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/really_o.jpg" data-mid="14335946" border="0" align="left"/>

And now I seem to be talking about me and me Dort again. I didn't mean to, but she is one of those friends who changes you, who doesn't stop changing you, who holds you to a higher standard and refuses to let you get away with bullshit. Also, she would probably bite a cop to defend and protect you.

<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/landshark.jpg" width="604" height="402" width_o="604" height_o="402" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/landshark_o.jpg" data-mid="14336035" border="0" align="left"/>

Everybody should have a friend like Land Shark! A maniac with a good head on her shoulders! She's the smartest person I know, and if I ever get in a fight, I hope she's there with me, because holy shit. She would break you in two.

<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/freckles.jpg" width="600" height="400" width_o="600" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96734/2637908/freckles_o.jpg" data-mid="14336093" border="0" align="left"/>

I am raving, a bit! Me Dort! I loves it.

This is a novel told through crazy job application cover letters

Cover letters are all the same. They're useless. You write the same lies over and over again, listing the store-bought parts of yourself that you respect the least. God knows how they tell anyone apart, but this is how it's done.

And then one day a car comes out of nowhere, and suddenly everything changes and you don't know if he'll ever wake up. You get out of bed in the morning, and when you sit down to write another paint-by-numbers cover letter, something entirely different comes out. You start threatening instead of begging. You tell impolite jokes. You talk about your childhood and your sexual fantasies. You sign your real name and you put yourself honestly into letter after letter and there is no way you are ever going to get this job. Not with a letter like this.

And you send it anyway.

"Joey Comeau's collection of real cover letters, Overqualified, is pretty much sui generis. Not to mention sweetly written, bitter and bitterly funny . . . One of the season's most remarkable books."
- Maclean's

"I feel different for having read this. I feel exploited, emotionally, in the best way possible. I don’t know how he does it -- his prose style is so unique that it’s impossible to tell who his influences might have been. He has a brilliant sense of humor, but it’s a sense of humor unlike any I’ve ever seen before. He is a preternaturally skilled novelist, and he’s written one of the most original and most affecting books I’ve read in years." - Bookslut

"A real story unfolds in these pages, about a departed brother and the sibling left behind. It's sad and fragmented and, in places, funny. This slender epistolary novel is charming."
- Los Angeles Times.

Also there is hot sex.

In 2012 it will be published together with Lockpick Pornography in a single volume, but until then it isn't available for purchase. However, like Lockpick, you can read the entire book online for free. I hope you like it, and I hope you show your friends.

This is a horror movie in novel form.

Martin is going to Bible Camp for the summer. He's going to make new friends. And he's excited, but that's probably because nobody told him what this book is called.

This is a book about a boy named Martin who goes to Bible Camp! Things go poorly for him. It is a slasher movie in book form, except not sexist. And it is about a boy's relationship with his mom.

You can read it for free online, because I think it is good to put books online for free! If you like it, maybe you will buy a copy, or maybe you will show a friend!

This is a book of dirty stories. It is a book where sex is fun and good and people are kind to each other. Also there are ghosts and there is math and there are obsessive compulsive disorders.

These stories are weird and fun and often bewildering, like sex itself.

Here are some of the stories to read for free. Maybe you will like them!

1. The Girl who Couldn't Come - About a girl who cannot come unless she's listening to Johnny Cash. And how she solves this particular problem.

2. Edith part one and part two. About a girl writing letters to a much older lady! Also, mad scientists! There should be more dirty stories about mad scientists.

3. ghosts About a very strange relationship. And clanking around the house in sheets.

4. This is Math There should also be more dirty stories about math. That is my opinion, and I guess I am putting my money where my mouth is! Be the porn you want to see in the world?!

5. Patricia Doesn't everyone have a list of geniuses to have sex with? A story about traveling through time to bother Patricia Highsmith.

6. The Meteor Shower (trigger warning) - About two men celebrating a birthday out under the stars while the sky falls. This is an excerpt from We All Got it Coming.

7. And then the Werewolf Because why can't dirty stories have surprise endings? Boy I have a lot of opinions about dirty stories.
